The report described the change as a 33% increase and said it applied to developers in the United States, Europe and elsewhere. Microsoft’s public onboarding pages explain how studios gain access to kits, but do not confirm the reported price or publish a country-by-country schedule.
How much does an Xbox development kit cost?
According to The Verge’s October 21, 2025 report, Microsoft raised the XDK price from $1,500 to $2,000. The report said the increase took effect immediately and characterized it as 33%. These are reported figures, not a price on a public Microsoft retail page.
The Verge said the adjustment applied beyond the United States, including Europe and other markets. Microsoft’s public documentation does not provide a complete regional price list. As of October 2026, the public pages reviewed also do not establish whether $2,000 remains the price or whether a developer’s terms vary. Studios considering an order need access to Microsoft’s Entertainment Developer Store (EDS) or direct confirmation from Microsoft.
Why did Microsoft raise the price?
The Verge reported that Microsoft’s announcement to Xbox developers attributed the adjustment to “macroeconomic developments.” It also quoted the announcement saying, “We remain committed to providing high-quality tools and support for your development efforts.” The wording was reproduced by The Verge from an announcement it had seen; Microsoft’s public onboarding pages do not contain a separate price announcement.

- 【Package included】- This kit includes PH0 and Torx T6 /T8 /T10 screwdrivers, tweezers, brushes, 5 crowbars.
The report discussed tariffs and other Xbox price changes as context. That context does not establish a more specific public explanation for the XDK increase, so it would be inaccurate to state that Microsoft officially attributed this particular change to a specific tariff or cost.
What does an XDK provide that a retail Xbox Series X does not?
An XDK is specialized hardware for building and testing Xbox games, not a consumer console sold through an ordinary checkout. The Verge’s report compared the kit’s 40GB of GDDR6 memory with 16GB in the consumer Xbox Series X and described additional enabled compute capacity, debugging features, three front USB ports, a display and programmable buttons. Those specifications are the report’s comparison, rather than a separate Microsoft public specification established in the pages reviewed.

| Feature | Xbox Development Kit (XDK) | Consumer Xbox Series X |
|---|---|---|
| Reported memory | 40GB GDDR6, according to The Verge’s October 2025 report | 16GB, according to the same report |
| Development and debugging | Extra compute capacity and debugging tools, as described by The Verge | Not described as offering the XDK’s development-kit features in the cited report |
| Physical features | Three front USB ports, a display and programmable buttons, according to The Verge | Not stated in the cited report as equivalent XDK features |
| Ordering route | Microsoft’s developer onboarding and EDS | Consumer retail channels |
A retail Series X is therefore not a substitute for the development kit. The hardware serves different purposes, and access to the XDK is tied to Microsoft’s developer program and store.
Who can order an Xbox developer kit?
Microsoft’s Xbox partner onboarding guide describes a program-based process rather than a public consumer purchase. In broad terms, studios register as Xbox partners, enroll in Partner Center, apply to ID@Xbox and complete the required onboarding and agreements. After onboarding, Microsoft provides access to EDS, where eligible studios can order kits. Microsoft says the ID@Xbox team makes initial kits available to order; studios seeking more than their available allocation are directed to contact ID Setup.

Microsoft says partner registration and applying to ID@Xbox have no fee. That does not mean an XDK is free: the hardware purchase is separate. The guide says EDS account creation takes about a week and describes shipment timing after payment, but does not state the kit price.
Is the GDK the same thing as an XDK?
No. The GDK is Microsoft’s software development kit; the XDK is physical development hardware. Microsoft describes the Gaming eXtensions Development Kit (GXDK) as the GDK version of the Xbox Development Kit. The related names refer to connected parts of the development environment, not interchangeable products.

What is publicly confirmed about current pricing?
The reported $2,000 price and its geographic scope come from The Verge’s October 2025 reporting, while Microsoft’s public pages confirm the onboarding and ordering route. Those official pages do not publish a current XDK price or country-by-country schedule. Developers need authorized EDS access or confirmation from Microsoft to establish what a kit would cost for their account and location.
