It is not an exact 20-liter pack, and a low weight alone does not make a daypack the best choice: fit, support, access and the gear you need to carry matter too. These are retailer specifications, not results from comparative field testing.
Which 20-liter hiking backpack is lightest?
Of the three packs compared here, the Deuter Speed Lite 21 has the lowest listed weight: 1 lb. 0.6 oz. at 21 liters. REI lists the Gregory Nano 20 at 1 lb. 3.2 oz. for 20 liters and the Osprey Talon Velocity at 1 lb. 14.6 oz. in size S/M for 20 liters. These figures are retailer specifications accessed in 2026, not independent measurements.

Capacity and weight can change with the size offered: REI lists the Talon Velocity at 20 liters in S/M and 22 liters in L/XL. Compare the specific size you would buy rather than relying on the model name alone. The Deuter is a near-20-liter option, not an exact 20-liter pack.
How to choose between these packs
Choose the Deuter for the lowest listed weight and a framed design
The Speed Lite 21 combines the lowest listed weight in this comparison with an internal frame. Its panel access and adjustable, detachable hipbelt may suit hikers who want a structured carry and access beyond a simple top opening. The REI listing describes it as “Lightweight and streamlined” and “perfectly sized for day hikes”; that is retailer product copy, not an independent performance finding. REI also lists no included raincover.

The Nano 20 is a frameless, exact-20-liter option with a removable webbing hipbelt and a front stretch-mesh pocket. REI marks the listing reviewed here discontinued, so treat it as a specification reference rather than a dependable current buying recommendation unless you confirm a listing and stock for the exact pack.
Choose the Osprey for its listed access and carry features
The Talon Velocity has the highest listed weight of these three in S/M, but its feature set includes flask-compatible harness pockets, hipbelt pockets, a pole attachment and an external hydration sleeve. Its two listed sizes differ in both capacity and weight; check the size label before comparing it with an exact-20-liter pack.

What size daypack do you need for a day hike?
A 20-liter pack can be a useful target for a day hike, but the right capacity depends on the equipment, food, water and extra layers your route and conditions call for. If your planned load does not fit comfortably, a nominally lighter or smaller pack is not an advantage. Compare capacity with the gear you actually intend to bring, and consider whether the pack’s pockets and access make that load workable.
Check fit before choosing by weight
Listed torso ranges are screening aids, not guarantees of comfort. REI’s backpack sizing and fit guide is a starting point. Check the manufacturer or retailer fit guidance for the exact pack, then try it with your intended load, the clothing layers you expect to wear and the relevant straps adjusted. A pack that feels comfortable empty may feel different when loaded.

These ranges overlap but are not identical. Use the fit guide and, where possible, try the specific pack on rather than assuming a model will fit based on the range alone.
Understand hydration and raincover inclusions
Reservoir-compatible means a pack can accommodate a compatible hydration reservoir; it does not mean the reservoir comes with it. REI says the reservoir is not included with the Deuter and Osprey listings. Check the exact item listing and size for compatibility and included accessories before purchasing. REI’s Deuter and Osprey listings also say no raincover is included.
