Best Gold IRA Companies: How to Compare Providers in 2026

There is no universal best gold IRA company. Compare written costs, custody, eligible metals and exit terms before funding an account.

There is no single best gold IRA company for every saver. Compare providers by the written, all-in cost for your account size, the custodian and depository they use, the exact metals they will place in the IRA, and the terms for selling those metals later. Augusta Precious Metals, Goldco, Birch Gold Group, American Hartford Gold, and Noble Gold are among the providers covered by current comparison articles; treat that list as a starting point, not a ranking or endorsement.

Which gold IRA companies should you compare?

Start with several providers, then assess their actual account documents and metal prices. CNBC Select published a comparison in September 2026 that covers gold IRA companies and assigns editorial distinctions. Augusta Precious Metals also publishes a comparison page, but it is a provider’s own page—not independent vetting—and its competitor figures should be treated accordingly.

The following figures are examples published on Augusta’s comparison page, which says it checked them in August 2026. They are not guaranteed quotes or a complete schedule of what an investor will pay. The page does not state comparable figures for every provider.

Provider Minimum shown Annual or first-year fee shown
Birch Gold Group $5,000 $235 annual fee
American Hartford Gold $10,000 Not stated (Augusta comparison page, checked August 2026)
Goldco $25,000 Not stated (Augusta comparison page, checked August 2026)
Augusta Precious Metals $50,000 $285 first year; $235 in subsequent years
Noble Gold Not stated (Augusta comparison page, checked August 2026) Not stated (Augusta comparison page, checked August 2026)

Augusta’s comparison page is the source for these dated, provider-presented examples. Other current comparisons may show different figures. Confirm current minimums and fees directly in each provider’s written schedule before comparing offers. CNBC Select’s comparison offers a separate editorial perspective; its labels reflect that publication’s judgment, not a guarantee that a company fits your circumstances.

How to choose a provider for your situation

A company can look attractive in a ranking yet be a poor fit once fixed fees, metal pricing, and account minimums are applied to your balance. Use these factors to narrow the field rather than treating a “best overall” label as a decision.

  • For a smaller account: Check the account or purchase minimum first, then calculate how recurring fixed charges affect your balance. A low minimum alone does not establish that the total cost is low.
  • For any account size: Compare the complete first-year cost and the recurring cost using the same proposed account value and metal selection. Include the price premium over spot for each proposed coin or bar, not just account fees.
  • If custody details matter to you: Identify the IRA custodian or trustee and the depository, and establish who is responsible for each part of the arrangement. Ask whether storage is segregated or commingled and whether you can choose.
  • If you may sell or change providers: Get the buyback process, pricing basis, charges, settlement timing, and any right to refuse a repurchase in writing before purchasing.

These are comparison criteria, not evidence that one named provider is cheapest, safest, or best. The available figures above do not establish comparable all-in costs or service quality across the companies.

What a gold IRA company does—and who holds the metals

A gold IRA is a self-directed IRA that holds qualifying precious metals under applicable tax and custody rules. The business marketed as the “gold IRA company” may help arrange an account and sell metals, but that does not make it the IRA custodian or the depository. Confirm the legal names and roles of the businesses involved in your own account paperwork.

The IRS generally restricts collectibles in IRAs but identifies exceptions for certain coins and qualifying bullion. For bullion to fall within the exception, the IRS says it must be in the physical possession of a bank or approved nonbank trustee. Publication 590-B (2025) also says IRA coins must be held by the IRA custodian or trustee and warns that owner possession is treated as a distribution. The IRS states: “If the owner or the beneficiary of the IRA takes possession of the coins, the coins will be treated as distributed.” See the IRS collectibles guidance and IRS Publication 590-B (2025).

Do not assume that every coin described in sales materials as “IRA-approved” qualifies. Eligibility depends on the specific item and applicable rules. Have the custodian confirm the exact product and custody arrangement, and consult a qualified tax professional about your circumstances.

How to compare the real cost

Ask each provider to quote the same account size, proposed metals, and storage option. Request both the total for the first year and the recurring annual total thereafter; a waived or discounted charge may be temporary. Have the provider separate account charges from the price of the metal.

  • Account setup or opening charge.
  • Custodian or trustee charges, including whether they recur annually.
  • Depository storage and any applicable insurance charges.
  • Transaction or processing charges for purchases, sales, transfers, or distributions.
  • The proposed price for each coin or bar and its premium over spot.
  • Any minimum balance, minimum purchase, or condition attached to a promotion.

Ask for a written illustration that shows the arithmetic, not just a headline annual fee. A fixed annual cost can weigh differently at different account sizes, while a metal premium changes the amount of metal your purchase buys. Do not treat a third-party comparison table as a substitute for a current quote and account documents.

What to verify before funding the account

  1. Ask who will hold the IRA. Get the custodian or trustee’s legal name and confirm its role in the account documents.
  2. Identify the depository and storage arrangement. Confirm the facility, whether storage is segregated or commingled, whether the choice is optional, and which party is responsible for the metals.
  3. Get the exact product list and prices. Ask for the specific coin or bar, its price, and confirmation from the custodian that it can be held in the IRA under the applicable rules.
  4. Request the complete fee schedule. Obtain setup, custody, storage, insurance if applicable, transaction, and other charges, and ask which charges are one-time versus recurring.
  5. Read the account and transaction documents. Check how purchases are authorized, how account assets are valued, and what charges or procedures apply when you sell, take a distribution, or transfer the account.
  6. Keep the metals in the required custody. Do not take personal possession of IRA metals without first understanding the tax consequences and getting appropriate professional guidance.

How to judge a buyback promise

A provider’s use of the word “buyback” does not by itself guarantee a price or immediate access to cash. Ask the company: “If you wanted to sell this back tomorrow, what actually happens?” Then get specific terms in writing.

  • How is the repurchase price calculated relative to spot, and when is that price set?
  • Is a quoted price binding, and how long does it remain valid?
  • Can the company decline to repurchase the metal?
  • Are there sale, shipping, processing, or other charges?
  • What steps are required, and how long does payment usually take after the sale is accepted?

Compare those answers with the purchase price and the account’s distribution or transfer procedures. A buyback can be one possible exit route, but its label alone does not establish a guaranteed price or liquidity.
