There is no single best GMAT prep course for every test taker. The right choice depends on how much structure, instruction, practice, and accountability you need—and what you can spend. You also do not have to buy a course: GMAC presents independent study with official materials as a viable option. Start with the free official resources, then pay for a course only if its specific features solve a problem your self-study plan does not.
Are GMAT prep courses worth it?
GMAC says courses “could help boost your GMAT score—if you commit to studying.” That is a conditional recommendation, not evidence that taking a course guarantees a higher score. The available sources do not establish a controlled, independent comparison of score gains caused by different courses.
A course may be worth paying for if you need a schedule, lessons, feedback, or an instructor to keep your preparation moving. If you can set a realistic timeline and study consistently on your own, official guides and practice materials offer another route. The value is in the fit between a course’s features and your needs, not its price or marketing claims.
Start with GMAC’s official prep materials
GMAC’s official prep page lists free and paid resources that can anchor either a self-study plan or a comparison with commercial courses.

- Free: a six-week study planner and Official Starter Kit with guided study, a sampler of 70 real GMAT questions, and two full-length official practice exams.
- Paid: the 2025–2026 Official Guide Series, section-specific official question collections, and official practice exams. GMAC says each physical or digital Official Guide includes access to an Online Question Bank.
GMAC describes its official practice exams as using the real exam’s algorithm, scoring, and timing. That makes them a useful way to practice in an exam-like format; it does not mean a commercial course’s own questions or predicted scores are equivalent.
Compare courses by the features you will use
Before comparing brands, identify what you want a course to do. These are the differences most likely to affect your day-to-day preparation:
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Instruction | Is the course self-paced, on-demand, live, or supported by tutor or instructor access? Will you actually use that format? |
| Practice | Does it include official questions or exams? What additional question bank, explanations, and lesson coverage does it provide? |
| Structure and feedback | Are there study plans, progress tracking, performance analytics, error analysis, or a way to get help when you are stuck? |
| Access and trial | How long does access last? Is there a trial, and what are its conditions? What happens when access expires? |
| Total cost and terms | What is the price at checkout, when does any discount end, and what refund terms apply? If there is a score guarantee, what exactly makes you eligible? |
Prices, discounts, trials, access periods, and guarantee terms can change. Treat provider pages as descriptions of their own products, not independent evaluations; check the selected plan’s current details and terms before paying.

GMAC official materials: a baseline for any budget
Use GMAC’s free Starter Kit and study planner to see whether you can follow a structured independent plan. If you want more official question practice, compare the paid guides, question collections, and exams listed on the GMAC official prep page. Magoosh: online plans
Magoosh’s plans page presents online options and a provider-created comparison of prep companies. It describes differences in factors such as practice, video instruction, explanations, study plans, mobile features, access, trials, and guarantees. Use the page to check the current contents of a plan, but do not treat Magoosh’s comparisons or marketing as an independent course review.
Target Test Prep: self-study, on-demand, and live-class formats
Target Test Prep’s plans page describes self-study and on-demand courses as well as a live-class route. The provider lists lessons, practice questions, video solutions, planning tools, performance analytics, an AI coach, and a five-day trial. Confirm which features belong to the plan you select and review current trial, price, and guarantee terms.
Manhattan Prep and Kaplan: coursework and targeted preparation
Manhattan Prep’s course page describes comprehensive coursework and more targeted adaptive preparation, along with instructors and a higher-score guarantee. Kaplan’s self-paced GMAT page says its offering includes official GMAT resources. Verify which materials are included in the specific plan and the current conditions for any advertised offer or guarantee.

GMAC names the Princeton Review among providers a test taker might consider, alongside Kaplan, Manhattan Prep, and Magoosh. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose based on your study needs and budget
GMAC’s guidance recommends assessing your current level, setting a goal and timeline, and considering whether a course matches your study style and budget. Apply that advice by working through these decisions:
- Set a target and timeline. Decide what you are aiming for and when you plan to take the exam. Leave enough time for regular study and practice.
- Try a structured free starting point. Use GMAC’s six-week planner and Starter Kit to see whether independent preparation fits your schedule and gives you enough guidance.
- Name the gap a paid course must fill. For example, you may need clearer lessons, a fixed calendar, instructor access, analytics, or a larger supply of practice. Do not pay for features you are unlikely to use.
- Compare only relevant plans. Match each option’s teaching format, question practice, support, and access period to your needs. Check whether official materials are included or must be obtained separately.
- Check the full terms at checkout. Confirm the total price, access end date, trial and refund rules, and any conditions tied to a guarantee. An advertised guarantee is not evidence of a typical score gain.
- Choose the least costly option that meets the need. If official materials and a schedule are enough, a commercial course may add little value. If you need teaching or accountability, compare plans that actually provide it.
What course marketing can—and cannot—tell you
A provider’s feature list can help you determine what a course includes. It cannot, by itself, show that the course will improve your score by a particular amount or outperform another option. No independent head-to-head evidence establishing course-caused score gains is available in the sources cited here. Treat score guarantees as contract terms with eligibility requirements, not as promises of a typical result.
