Berkshire Hathaway’s Portfolio After Greg Abel Took Over: Who’s In and Who’s Out

Berkshire’s latest 13F, filed August 14, shows major Alphabet growth, higher Delta and Macy’s share counts, and lower Nucor holdings. The filing is a delayed snapshot, not evidence that Greg Abel personally selected every trade.

Berkshire Hathaway’s latest public stock snapshot shows a sharp increase in Alphabet shares, higher reported holdings of Delta Air Lines and Macy’s, and a reduced Nucor position. The snapshot is the company’s Form 13F for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, filed August 14—not a live portfolio update. It reports Berkshire and included managers’ holdings; it does not establish that CEO Greg Abel personally chose each trade.

What changed in Berkshire’s latest 13F?

The June 30 filing lists 89 information-table entries with a reported value of $299,253,556,246. Those are filing entries, not necessarily 89 distinct companies. Comparing the March 31 and June 30 filings by reported shares makes the clearest visible changes easier to separate from market-price movements.

Holding March 31, 2026 shares June 30, 2026 shares Reported change
Alphabet, Class A and Class C combined About 57.85 million About 105.98 million Increase of about 48.13 million
Delta Air Lines 39,809,456 57,320,000 Increase of 17,510,544
Macy’s 3,038,355 7,347,426 Increase of 4,309,071
Nucor 3,907,075 1,857,752 Decrease of 2,049,323

The Alphabet totals are calculated by adding the Class A and Class C entries in each SEC filing; they are not a separate issuer announcement. All figures in the table compare shares reported at the two quarter ends. A change in reported market value could also reflect the stock price changing, rather than a change in the number of shares held.

Which holdings were exited or cut?

Positions absent from the June filing

Six prominent positions reported as sold in the first quarter were absent from the June 30 table. Morningstar’s Q1 coverage gave the following approximate sale quantities. These are Q1 transactions, not newly announced Q2 exits.

Security Approximate Q1 shares sold, as reported by Morningstar Status in June 30 filing
Visa 8.3 million Absent
Mastercard 4.0 million Absent
Constellation Brands 12.4 million Absent
UnitedHealth 5.0 million Absent
Domino’s Pizza 3.4 million Absent
Aon 3.6 million Absent

Chevron remained in the portfolio

Chevron is not a full exit in this snapshot. Morningstar reported that Berkshire sold 45.8 million Chevron shares in Q1, but the SEC filings show 84,375,856 shares at both March 31 and June 30. That illustrates why a large earlier reduction should not be mistaken for a later-quarter sale—or for a complete exit.

What the results say—and do not say—about Abel’s influence

Gregory E. Abel became Berkshire’s CEO in January 2026, with Warren Buffett remaining chairman. Berkshire’s 2025 annual report lists Abel as CEO and Buffett as chairman and former CEO. But a 13F is a report of institutional holdings, not a record of who proposed or approved an individual transaction. The June filing’s cover page includes Buffett among its reporting managers, and Berkshire’s investment decisions are not attributable to Abel alone based on these tables.

Associated Press coverage of Abel’s first shareholder letter reported that portfolio manager Ted Weschler handled about 6% of the portfolio, according to Abel’s letter. Abel said Berkshire would not retreat from investing or significantly change how it operates. He described cash as “dry powder” and wrote: “Our balance sheet is a strategic asset to be deployed at the right time. It allows us to act decisively, invest when others are tentative or fearful, and stand firm when financial storms roll through.” The statement signals continuity and financial flexibility; it does not explain the rationale for any specific stock transaction.

How the cash and purchase figures fit the stock filing

In its August 8, 2026 coverage of Berkshire’s second-quarter results, the Associated Press reported about $365.5 billion in cash, down from nearly $400 billion at March 31; about $4.5 billion of Berkshire share repurchases; and an Alphabet investment of about $10 billion. The same report said the earnings release suggested more than $21 billion in purchases of commercial, industrial, and other stocks without identifying all of them. The detailed 13F, filed August 14, supplies the quarter-end reportable holdings—not a full list of every asset or every transaction during the quarter.

What a Berkshire 13F can tell an investor

A Form 13F is a delayed quarter-end view of certain reportable securities, not a real-time portfolio tracker. It cannot show when trades took place within the quarter or what Berkshire did after June 30. Nor does it cover every asset Berkshire owns: operating companies, foreign holdings, and other assets outside the filing’s scope are not captured as a complete picture of the company.

  • Use the period-end date to understand when the holdings were measured, and the filing date to understand when the information became public.
  • Compare share counts to distinguish buying or selling from price-driven changes in reported value.
  • Treat a missing position as absent from that filing, not as proof of Berkshire’s reasoning or the exact timing of an exit.
  • Do not infer a stock thesis from the tables; they report holdings, not the rationale behind individual transactions.

For investors asking what Berkshire Hathaway bought and sold, the clearest Q2 signal is the substantial increase in reported Alphabet shares, alongside the increases in Delta and Macy’s and the reduction in Nucor. The earlier exits remain relevant context, but they belong to Q1. The filings show a portfolio changing under Abel’s CEO tenure; they do not document a personal trade list authored by Abel.
