The story combines René Lacoste’s success on court, clothing designed for movement, early use of a visible logo, and expansion into markets and products beyond tennis. The company’s official history documents those milestones, but it does not establish a current global ranking by sales or market share.
How did Lacoste become a global sportswear brand?
The short answer is that Lacoste turned tennis credentials into a distinctive clothing identity, then carried that identity beyond the court. Its origin was not a marketing campaign built around an invented mascot: according to the company’s account, the crocodile began as a nickname for René Lacoste and became an emblem he chose to wear.
The polo shirt made that emblem visible on an everyday garment. International exports, new product categories, and continued links to tennis widened the audience and gave the brand a life beyond its founder’s playing career.
Why is the crocodile Lacoste’s logo?
Lacoste’s corporate history says René Lacoste was nicknamed “the crocodile” by the American press after a 1923 match in Boston. The company connects the nickname to a wager involving a crocodile-skin suitcase. Lacoste later encouraged his friend Robert George to embroider a crocodile on his jackets, turning the story into a personal emblem. This origin is the company’s account of the nickname and its adoption.

The logo’s unusual strength was its visibility: the animal could be recognized at a glance, and it appeared on clothing rather than remaining only a name or label. Lacoste describes itself as the first brand to display a logo on clothing; that “first” claim is the company’s own, rather than an independently established comparison.
How did tennis shape the original polo?
Lacoste’s official history identifies René Lacoste as the world’s top tennis player in 1926 and 1927, with seven Grand Slam titles. His sporting reputation gave the clothing an association with performance, while the garments addressed a practical need: freedom of movement on court.
In 1933, René Lacoste and knitwear manufacturer André Gillier founded the company. Lacoste says René introduced a flexible, lightweight cotton piqué polo that year. Its company overview describes the short-sleeved shirt as breathable and designed to allow greater freedom of movement. Those features made the polo more than a badge: the garment itself expressed the brand’s connection to sport.

The company’s heritage account also records a tennis shoe developed by Lacoste in 1958, called the “René.” It highlights a cotton-canvas upper, ventilation eyelets, a rubber-reinforced forefoot, grip, lightness, and comfort. That history helps show the brand’s footwear ambitions, but it does not establish that this particular historical model is currently sold.

How did Lacoste grow beyond tennis clothing?
Lacoste says it began exporting clothing around the world in the 1950s. A children’s range helped extend the polo’s appeal across generations, while the crocodile made the garment identifiable outside a match or club setting. The company frames its identity as a meeting of sport and elegance, and says communities in different places and periods have adopted its clothing in their own ways.
Over time, the company added categories that made it less dependent on a single garment:

Why did Lacoste keep a strong connection to tennis?
The sport remained part of the brand’s public identity after its founder’s playing career. Lacoste says its relationship with Roland-Garros dates to 1927 and that it became the tournament’s official sponsor in 1971. The company links the construction of the stadium to the French Davis Cup team’s victory in the United States.
Tennis also appears in Lacoste’s innovation story. Its history says a steel racket associated with the brand won 46 Grand Slam titles between 1966 and 1978. This is a company-reported historical figure, and it should not be read as a present-day performance measure or independent ranking.

What does “one of the biggest” mean for Lacoste today?
The phrase works as a description of Lacoste’s global recognition, but the available official history and overview do not provide current comparable revenue, market share, or a ranked list of sportswear companies. They are useful sources for the brand’s own chronology and positioning, not evidence for a precise present-day size ranking.
A sound comparison would need like-for-like figures: the same fiscal year and currency, a clear distinction between brand revenue and parent-company revenue, and comparable treatment of geography, sales channels, and market segments. Without that, a ranking would imply more certainty than the published figures support.

What explains Lacoste’s lasting identity?
The company’s own history ties Lacoste’s identity to a blend of sporting achievement, practical design, and a recognizable emblem. René Lacoste’s quoted formulation, reproduced on the company’s overview page, is: “Without elegance, playing and winning are not enough.” The sentiment helps explain how the brand could present athletic clothing as both functional and refined. It is a quotation as attributed by Lacoste; the company page does not provide an independent transcript or further speaker context.
That combination—not a substantiated current ranking—is the clearest explanation for Lacoste’s reach: a tennis-linked origin, a polo intended for movement, an emblem placed openly on clothing, and expansion into products and markets beyond the court.
