On October 2, 2024, Bank of America customers reported trouble signing in and seeing account information, including balances displayed as $0, dashes, unavailable, or stuck on the previous day’s figures. The bank said the technology issues were resolved that evening. A spokesperson said the incident was not related to a cyberattack, but the technical cause was not disclosed. A blank or zero balance on screen during the incident did not, by itself, establish that money had been lost.
What happened to Bank of America’s online and mobile banking?
On Wednesday, October 2, 2024, customers reported problems accessing Bank of America’s online and mobile banking. Some could not sign in or retrieve their account list; others who got into the service saw missing or misleading balance information. The CBS News report said outage reports began shortly after noon Eastern time. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution described system messages including “Some accounts and/or balances are temporarily unavailable” and “We are temporarily unable to retrieve all your accounts.”
Outage-monitoring reports rose during the afternoon. CBS News reported about 5,000 DownDetector reports by 3 p.m. ET. Banking Dive later reported that complaints peaked at more than 19,200 at 1:25 p.m. ET and tapered after 8 p.m. These are reports submitted to an outage-monitoring service, not a verified count of unique customers or affected accounts. The Los Angeles Times described more than 20,000 customers as affected, but also reported that the bank did not provide its own impact count; treat that figure as a reported estimate, not a bank-confirmed total.
Why did some balances show $0 or disappear?
The coverage documents a disruption in account access and balance information, but does not identify the technical root cause. Customers reported zero balances, dashes, unavailable amounts, and figures that appeared to be from the prior day. Bank of America’s initial statement, quoted by CBS News and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, said: “Some clients are experiencing an issue accessing their accounts and balance information today.” The bank added that issues had “largely been resolved.”

Banking Dive reported that the bank declined to specify a cause. The Los Angeles Times later quoted spokesperson Matthew Card saying, “These technology issues have been fully resolved,” and reported his statement that the glitch was not related to a cyberattack. The reporting does not establish a more specific explanation, so claims attributing the incident to a particular system, vendor, software change, or outside event are not supported by these accounts.
Did customers lose money if an account showed a zero balance?
Not on the evidence of the display alone. A zero, blank, or unavailable balance during an access incident is a screen symptom; it is not proof of a withdrawal, missing funds, or a changed account ledger. The October 2024 reports do not audit individual customers’ transactions, so they cannot establish what happened in any one account. To determine whether a transaction actually occurred, the relevant evidence is the account’s transaction history or confirmation from the bank, rather than a temporary balance display by itself.

Bank of America said the problems had largely been resolved in its initial statement and later said the technology issues were fully resolved. What the outage reports can—and cannot—tell you
- They document reported symptoms: sign-in and account-retrieval problems, along with balances shown as zero, dashes, unavailable, or stale.
- They indicate a broad incident, not a verified customer total: DownDetector counts are user-submitted complaints, and the bank did not supply an affected-customer count in the cited coverage.
- They record the bank’s stated position on cause: its spokesperson said the issue was not related to a cyberattack, while the specific technical cause remained undisclosed.
- They do not prove an individual loss: the news reports describe service and display problems, not a review of each customer’s transactions.
