Avis Budget Group (NASDAQ: CAR) shares had risen more than 45% in the first week of April 2026, according to Stocktwits on April 7. That was an early snapshot, not the month’s full return: the stock later reached a reported $713.97 peak on April 21, then fell nearly 70% over two days. A short squeeze was a plausible part of the rally, but neither social-media enthusiasm nor short-interest estimates establish a single cause—or make the move a reliable trading signal.
What happened to CAR stock in April 2026?
Stocktwits reported on April 7, 2026, that Avis Budget shares were up more than 45% during the first week of April. The figure covered only that early-week interval. It did not describe the full month or indicate where the stock would ultimately peak.

The rally continued after that report. Reuters said CAR reached a record high on April 21, with trading halted multiple times as short sellers faced heavy losses. Axios later reported that the stock peaked at $713.97 that day after rising more than 600%, then declined nearly 70% over the following two days. These are dated reports of an exceptionally volatile episode, not a current quote or forecast.
How could a short squeeze have amplified the move?
A short seller borrows shares, sells them, and hopes to buy them back later at a lower price. If the price rises instead, the short seller can face losses and may buy shares to close the position. Those purchases add demand to the market and can help push the price higher, potentially pressuring other short sellers in turn.

The amount of stock readily available to trade can matter as well as the number of shares sold short. Reuters, citing LSEG data, reported that SRS Investment Management and Pentwater Capital Management together held more than 71% of CAR’s outstanding shares as of its April 21 report. If major holders do not lend their shares, the freely tradable supply may be more constrained. Interactive Brokers chief market analyst Steve Sosnick described the mechanism to Reuters: “If they choose not to lend their shares and to make it difficult for people to borrow, then this really creates a short squeeze situation.”
That explains why a squeeze was a plausible market-mechanics interpretation; it does not prove that a particular holder withheld shares, establish the full cause of the price move, or show that the same conditions will recur. Short-interest estimates also differed by provider and observation date:

These are attributed estimates, not interchangeable readings from one common measurement. Provider methodology and timing matter; the percentages should not be averaged or presented as a definitive single figure.
What did bullish retail sentiment show—and not show?
In its April 7 report, Stocktwits said its CAR sentiment had moved from “bullish” to “extremely bullish,” that message volume rose 2,033.3% in the preceding 24 hours, and that Avis was among its top trending tickers. Those indicators describe activity and sentiment on that platform, not the views or trades of all individual investors.

Attention on a social platform is not evidence that its users drove the price move. Axios, citing Vanda data, said the rally was not about retail traders. Reuters also described CAR as the second-most trending ticker on Stocktwits on April 21. Taken together, the reports distinguish visible online attention from proof of who supplied the buying pressure.
What did analysts and Avis’s business results say?
The squeeze narrative unfolded alongside questions about the company’s valuation and operating performance. Stocktwits reported that Deutsche Bank downgraded CAR from Buy to Hold on April 6 and set a $128 price target. It also reported analyst Chris Woronka’s view that technical conditions left room for the stock to move meaningfully higher before the rally ran its course. Deutsche Bank characterized the downgrade as “purely fundamental in nature,” while acknowledging that technical upside potential; that phrase was reported wording, not a full analyst quotation.

Reuters reported that Barclays downgraded CAR from Equal Weight to Underweight on April 20, saying even improved fundamentals did not justify the then-current share price. Reuters also reported Avis Budget’s net loss of $856 million for the December quarter.

Operating trends were not uniformly worsening. Investing.com quoted Barclays analyst Dan Levy saying rental pricing and depreciation trends had improved, while noting uncertainty about how long the rally could last. Stocktwits reported CFO Daniel Cunha’s view that the conditions that had simultaneously pressured rental days, depreciation, and revenue per day were not present in the current period. It also reported company guidance for a depreciation reset that would weigh on core earnings. In comments about results versus guidance, Avis Budget CEO Brian Choi said: “We fell significantly short of guidance. That’s unacceptable, and I have no excuses to offer. What I will say is that the decisions we made were grounded in the information we had at the time.”

What the episode means for someone considering CAR shares
The April episode shows why a dramatic rally and a business outlook should be assessed separately. Short interest, concentrated ownership, and limited available supply can help explain how a stock moves sharply; they do not determine when a squeeze will end or whether a price is supported by future earnings. The subsequent peak and rapid reversal underscore the risk of treating a dated squeeze thesis as a dependable forecast.
The analyst calls also addressed different questions. Deutsche Bank’s Hold rating and $128 target, reported April 7, were a fundamental valuation view; Woronka’s technical observation concerned possible room for a rally. Barclays’ April 20 Underweight call challenged the valuation despite improving operating trends. None of these dated assessments should be read as a current rating, target, or personalized recommendation.
For a personal decision, consider your time horizon, ability to absorb a large loss, and the company’s results and valuation—not just message volume or a short-interest headline. Verify current filings, prices, and analyst coverage before acting; the figures here describe reporting from April 2026, not conditions today.
