Australian Venue Co (AVC) apologised on 2 December 2024 after reports that it had told venue managers its pubs would not specifically celebrate Australia Day in 2025. The company said its comments caused concern and confusion, and clarified that its pubs would be open, continue booking events and welcome people whether or not they chose to celebrate.
What Australian Venue Co reportedly announced
In late November 2024, media reported that AVC had told managers its venues would not specifically celebrate Australia Day on 26 January 2025. The reported rationale was that the day caused sadness for some community members and hurt for some patrons and team members. The initial instruction is reported by ABC News; the report does not establish the exact wording or distribution of an internal message. ABC News reported the announcement and subsequent response.
The headline phrase “axe Aus Day” refers to celebrations at AVC pubs, not to closing the pubs or cancelling the national public holiday. Australia Day remained on 26 January. ABC noted that the date became a permanent national public holiday named Australia Day in 1994. The date is contested: some Indigenous people regard it as marking British colonisation, but views among Indigenous people and Australians are not uniform.
Why the company apologised
On 2 December, AVC acknowledged that its weekend comments had caused “both concern and confusion” and said it regretted that response. In a statement reproduced by ABC, the company said its purpose was to reinforce community in its venues, not divide it, and apologised for its comments. AVC also said it had not intended to offend anyone. ABC News quoted AVC’s statement.

Did the decision apply to all Australian pubs?
No. The reported message concerned AVC venues, not the entire Australian hotel industry. Australian Hotels Association South Australia president David Basheer told ABC that the association did not instruct members about Australia Day and that individual hotels made their own decisions. His comments describe the association’s approach in South Australia, not a national policy for all pubs. ABC News reported Basheer’s comments.
