Atari announced on May 23, 2024, that it had acquired the Intellivision brand, its trademarks and rights to more than 200 games. It did not announce buying Intellivision Entertainment or the Amico console project. Amico Entertainment said it retained Amico hardware intellectual property and could make licensed, reimagined Intellivision games for its platform.
What Atari acquired
Atari’s announcement describes a purchase from Intellivision Entertainment LLC of the Intellivision brand and certain games. The deal included the brand’s trademarks and rights to more than 200 titles from its portfolio. The announcement does not disclose a purchase price.
That distinction matters: buying rights to a brand and games is not the same as buying the company that had been developing Amico, or the Amico console itself. Atari said Intellivision Entertainment would rebrand and continue developing and distributing Amico products, with a license from Atari to distribute new versions of Intellivision games on Amico. What happened to Intellivision Entertainment and Amico
In a July 9, 2024 update, the seller identified itself as Amico Entertainment and said it retained all Amico hardware intellectual property and patents, including those for the controllers, console and Amico Home. It also said it retained the right to create reimagined Amico versions of classic Intellivision catalog games under license from Atari. Amico Entertainment’s update

The statements establish that Amico Entertainment retained those rights and described licensed game plans; they do not establish that a physical Amico console has shipped. Atari’s acquisition announcement characterized Amico as still under development at the time.
Why the deal reunited early console rivals
Mattel Electronics released the first Intellivision home console in 1979 as a competitor to Atari’s 2600. Atari’s announcement says the Intellivision platform sold an estimated five million units through 1990. That is Atari’s estimate, not an independently audited sales total. Atari’s announcement

- Easy Plug and play setup.
- Compatible with any game system utilizing a 9 pin sega style connection.
- Excellent playability and response time.
- Sturdy construction and design
- Four Button design improves playability over original style game controllers.
The rivalry included comparative advertising featuring actor and sports journalist George Plimpton. Competition also crossed into software: Mattel launched its M Network label in 1982 to publish games for the Atari 2600, including ports of Intellivision games. Mattel closed its software division in 1984 after the 1983 video game market crash. Atari’s brand history
Atari framed the acquisition as an opportunity to bring the former competitors together. Digital Eclipse Studio Head Mike Mika called it “the longest-running console war in history”; that phrase is promotional characterization, not a formal historical classification.

What the companies said they would do next
Atari said it would seek to broaden digital and physical distribution of legacy Intellivision games, potentially develop new games and explore licensing and other brand opportunities. The company also mentioned apparel and collectibles. These are stated plans, not guarantees that every product or project will be released. Atari’s announcement
Amico Entertainment said it looked forward to collaboration with Atari and to bringing Atari and Intellivision titles to Amico and Amico Home. Its update describes the license and retained hardware rights; it does not establish a release schedule.

Ways to play Intellivision games now
For a current, Intellivision-branded product, Atari lists the Atari Intellivision Sprint console. The product page describes a modern Atari console with 45 built-in games, HDMI connectivity, two wireless rechargeable disc controllers and game overlays. The listing showed a price of $149.99 and availability when checked on October 7, 2026; price and stock can change.
The Sprint is distinct from both the original Mattel system launched in 1979 and the Amico platform. Its listed built-in game selection is not evidence that it has the same library as either platform, or that games are compatible between them. Atari’s listing does not establish availability from any particular retailer.
