Athletic Greens raised $115 million in a financing round announced on January 25, 2022, led by Alpha Wave Ventures. TechCrunch reported the company’s valuation at the time as $1.2 billion pre-money—a historical figure, not a statement of its current valuation.
What happened in Athletic Greens’ 2022 funding round?
TechCrunch reported that Athletic Greens announced $115 million in new funding on January 25, 2022. Alpha Wave Ventures led the round. The report also named new investor Mark Vadon and several returning investors, though it did not establish the company’s later financing history. TechCrunch’s January 25, 2022 report identified Chris Ashenden as the company’s founder and CEO at the time.
What did the $1.2 billion valuation mean?
The $1.2 billion figure was reported as a pre-money valuation for the January 2022 round. Pre-money means the company’s stated valuation before the new investment is added; it is not the same as a post-money valuation. The figure belongs to that financing report and should not be read as Athletic Greens’ current valuation.
The report said the funding was intended to accelerate subscriber growth and support Athletic Greens’ ambitions as a global nutrition brand. Those were plans described at the time of the announcement; the report does not verify how much of that expansion was later achieved.

What is AG1, the product behind the funding story?
Athletic Greens’ flagship product, now called AG1, is a powdered daily supplement mixed with water—not a ready-to-drink bottled beverage. The company’s product page describes how to prepare it and provides its ingredient and nutrition information. AG1’s current FAQ describes AG1 Next Gen as containing 50 ingredients and names five probiotic strains; formulation details are manufacturer-provided and may change.
The NSF Certified for Sport listing identifies AG1 as a powder sold in the United States and lists a 13 g serving size. Product descriptions and certification information establish details about the product and its format; they are not independent evidence that AG1 produces specific health benefits.

What the funding announcement does—and does not—establish
- Established: TechCrunch reported a $115 million raise led by Alpha Wave Ventures and a $1.2 billion pre-money valuation in January 2022.
- Not established by that report: Athletic Greens’ current valuation, subsequent funding, or whether its expansion plans were completed.
- Product context: AG1 is a powdered supplement mixed with water. Current formulation details come from the company, and the cited product information does not establish clinical efficacy.
TechCrunch quoted Ashenden describing himself as “a health and wellness-obsessed person” who “kept getting sick” despite believing he knew a lot about nutrition and wellness. That is his personal account as reported at the time, not medical evidence or proof of a product effect.
