The reported buyer was the fund—not Cathie Wood in a documented personal brokerage transaction. TheStreet connected the timing with a U.S.–China tariff agreement, but its report does not show that the agreement caused the purchase.
What did ARKQ buy?
TheStreet reported that ARKQ purchased 30,217 Baidu shares on May 12, 2025, valued at roughly $2.7 million. The article presents this as one trade in a sequence of ARK purchases, rather than a newly established personal investment by Wood. The transaction has not been independently confirmed here against an original ARK trade disclosure, and the report does not establish ARKQ’s current Baidu holdings.
The report said ARK had returned to Baidu on March 24, 2025, after exiting by the third quarter of 2022, and then added shares again in April. Those dates describe the reported historical position activity; they do not indicate what the fund owns today. TheStreet’s account is the source for the trade and position history.
Did easing trade tensions prompt the purchase?
TheStreet placed the May 12 trade alongside a U.S.–China tariff agreement reached in Geneva. Its May 17, 2025 report described U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods being reduced to 30% for three months and China’s duties on U.S. imports falling to 10% from 125%. These are the article’s account of the agreement at that time, not current tariff rates.

The timing provides context, not proof of motive. The report does not establish that the tariff agreement led ARKQ to buy Baidu, so it is more accurate to say the trade occurred amid easing trade tensions than to say Wood bought because tensions eased.
Why was Baidu relevant to ARKQ?
TheStreet described Baidu as a Chinese search-engine company expanding into artificial intelligence and autonomous mobility. At the time of its report, it cited the company’s recently launched ERNIE X1 and ERNIE 4.5 models. That is time-specific coverage; it does not verify the models’ current status or Baidu’s latest business mix.

The article also quoted Wood discussing Baidu CEO Robin Li’s self-driving business. As quoted by TheStreet, Wood said: “We believe that autonomous mobility in the next 5 to 10 years is going to scale globally to an $8 to $10 trillion market. If Baidu were to get any of that market even outside of China in the rest of Asia, we think that’s not at all discounted in the stock.”
The $8–$10 trillion figure is Wood’s forecast for a potential global autonomous-mobility market over five to ten years—not a measured market value, a Baidu revenue estimate, or a guarantee of growth. The quotation is attributed to Wood as reported by TheStreet; it has not been independently checked against an original transcript.

What the reported trade does—and does not—tell investors
- It identifies a reported fund trade. The account names ARKQ as the buyer, not Wood’s personal account.
- It offers a historical snapshot. A trade reported in May 2025 does not establish the fund’s current position or signal that it still holds the shares.
- It gives context, not a recommendation. A purchase by an actively managed ETF is not evidence that Baidu suits an individual investor’s goals, risk tolerance, or portfolio.
- It does not prove a catalyst. The article’s mention of the tariff agreement does not establish why ARKQ made the trade.
How the trade fits the article’s performance context
TheStreet also reported that ARKK, a separate ARK ETF, was up 1.32% year to date and had a five-year annualized return of 0.59% as of May 16, 2025. These are dated figures reported for ARKK, not ARKQ and not current performance. They provide limited historical context and do not explain the Baidu trade or predict future returns. TheStreet’s report also included other market comparisons and fund-flow figures, which likewise should be read as May 2025 context.
