The standard limit is generally $250,000 per depositor or member, per insured institution, per ownership category. The limit is not automatically multiplied by opening more accounts, choosing another account type, or using another app name.
That protection addresses the failure of the insured bank or credit union. It does not establish that every product in a financial app is insured, or answer separate questions about cybersecurity, fraud reimbursement, access delays, rates, or customer service.

What “safe” means for an online savings account
For federal deposit insurance, the key question is not whether you opened the account online or at a branch. It is whether the funds are held as an eligible deposit at an FDIC-insured bank, or as an eligible share account at a federally insured credit union. When those conditions are met, the applicable federal insurance system protects qualifying balances if the insured institution fails, up to the coverage limit.

At a federally insured credit union, eligible share savings accounts are covered by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, which is administered by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Coverage for eligible accounts is automatic; the depositor or member does not apply separately for it.

“Safe” should be read narrowly here. Federal insurance is not a general guarantee of an online financial service, every item displayed in its app, or every possible problem involving an account. It answers a specific question: whether an eligible balance is insured against the failure of a qualifying institution, and up to what amount.
How the $250,000 limit works
For an FDIC-insured bank, the standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. The FDIC states this limit in its current agency guidance, accessed October 8, 2026. The amount is based on the depositor, the actual insured bank, and the legal ownership category—not on the number of account numbers or the names of the products.

Balances held in the same ownership category at the same bank are combined. For example, if one person has $180,000 in one savings account and $100,000 in another account in the same category at that bank, the combined balance is $280,000. Against a $250,000 standard limit, $30,000 is above the insured amount, assuming both balances qualify and no other ownership-category rule changes the calculation. This is why checking the total at the institution matters more than checking each account separately.

Different qualifying ownership categories may receive separate coverage, but each category has requirements. Simply labeling an account differently, opening another product, or adding a second app does not establish that a separate category applies. At federally insured credit unions, NCUA guidance describes individual accounts as covered up to $250,000 and joint-account interests as covered up to $250,000 per member-owner. Certain retirement and trust accounts may receive separate treatment subject to applicable requirements. These category rules make ownership details important at credit unions as well; the presence of multiple accounts by itself is not enough to determine the total.

How to check whether your online account is insured
- Find the legal institution holding the funds. Read the account disclosures and identify the bank or credit union itself, not just the app, service, or brand through which you opened the account. A different brand or app name alone does not prove that your funds are held at a separate insured institution.
- Verify the institution in the appropriate official directory. Search for a bank using FDIC BankFind. For a credit union, use the NCUA Credit Union Locator and confirm that it is federally insured. NCUA guidance distinguishes federal insurance from private share insurance offered by some state-chartered credit unions; private coverage is not backed by the full faith and credit of the United States.
- Confirm that the product is a deposit or share account. Check the product description and disclosures. A financial app may present multiple kinds of products together, but the fact that an item appears alongside a savings balance does not make it an insured deposit.
- Gather balances and ownership details. Include other accounts you hold at the same institution in the same ownership category. Do not assume that a second account type or a second login creates another $250,000 limit.
- Run the official estimate. Use EDIE for bank deposits or the NCUA Share Insurance Estimator for credit union accounts. Enter the institution, balances, and ownership information accurately. Trust, business, retirement, and multi-owner arrangements can involve requirements that are not captured by a simple account count.
- Resolve complex cases with the agency rules or the agency. If you are unsure whether an ownership category applies, or how a trust, business, retirement account, or multiple owners affect your total, consult the relevant agency’s guidance or contact the agency rather than assuming the balance is separately covered.
Which products federal insurance does not cover
Federal deposit or share insurance does not extend to every financial product sold by a bank or credit union. Agency guidance identifies stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and annuities as examples of products excluded from deposit insurance. A product’s location in the same website, app, or account dashboard as an insured savings account does not change its status.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the legal product description and the institution disclosures for the specific item you are considering. If it is an investment or insurance product rather than an eligible deposit or share account, do not treat the savings-account limit as protection for it. The question is the product’s status, not how familiar or bank-like its interface appears.

Common assumptions that can leave a balance exposed
- “Each account gets its own $250,000 limit.” Not necessarily. At the same bank, balances in the same ownership category are added together across accounts.
- “A different account type creates a new limit.” The product type alone does not create another limit. The institution and qualifying ownership category govern how balances are aggregated.
- “A new app or brand must mean a new bank.” A brand name is not enough to establish a separate insured institution. Identify and verify the legal institution named in the disclosures.
- “Everything shown in a banking app is insured.” No. Insurance applies to eligible deposits or share accounts, not automatically to investments, insurance products, or other items displayed in the same service.
- “Any credit union insurance is federal.” Not always. Some state-chartered credit unions have private share insurance. Confirm federal insurance through NCUA’s official locator rather than relying on a general claim that an account is insured.
- “Insured means protected from every online-account risk.” Federal coverage addresses eligible balances if an insured institution fails. The insurance guidance does not establish cybersecurity strength, fraud reimbursement, how quickly access will be restored, interest rates, withdrawal restrictions, or service quality.
What federal coverage does—and does not—tell you
Insurance is one useful check when choosing an online savings account, but it is only one dimension of safety. The FDIC and NCUA coverage rules tell you how eligible deposits or shares are treated if the insured institution fails, subject to the applicable limit and ownership rules. They do not provide a comparative assessment of an online provider’s security controls or customer support.
Evaluate those other concerns separately using the institution’s disclosures and the information available to you. Do not infer that a higher rate, a polished app, or a familiar brand changes the insurance limit. Conversely, the fact that an account is online does not by itself make an otherwise eligible deposit uninsured. For the federal-insurance question, verify the underlying institution, product eligibility, and aggregate balance in the relevant ownership category.
When to use an official estimator
Use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) when checking deposits at an FDIC-insured bank. Use NCUA’s Share Insurance Estimator for eligible accounts at a federally insured credit union. The associated agency institution lookups—FDIC BankFind and the NCUA Credit Union Locator—answer the separate question of whether the institution is in the relevant federal system.
An estimator is especially helpful when you have multiple accounts at one institution or when ownership is not straightforward. It is only as useful as the information entered: include the relevant balances and select the ownership facts that accurately describe the accounts. For trusts, business accounts, retirement accounts, or accounts with multiple owners, verify the applicable agency requirements rather than extrapolating from the standard individual limit.
The stated figures here reflect official FDIC and NCUA guidance accessed October 8, 2026. Institutional status and applicable rules can change, so confirm the institution and current agency guidance when making a decision.
