For a shorter or longer period, estimate interest as starting balance × ((1 + APY)days/365 − 1), assuming the APY stays the same and you make no deposits or withdrawals. These are estimates: the bank’s actual interest depends on its account terms and your balances over time.
Calculate a one-year interest estimate
APY is the clearest figure to use for a one-year estimate because it reflects the interest rate and compounding over a 365-day period. Convert the APY percentage to a decimal, then multiply it by the balance you expect to keep on deposit.

Formula: starting balance × APY as a decimal = estimated interest for one year
For example, if $10,000 stays in an account for a year at an unchanged illustrative APY of 4%, the estimate is $10,000 × 0.04 = $400 in interest. The estimated ending balance is $10,400. The balance and APY are examples to show the arithmetic, not a current account offer or a promise of what a particular bank will pay.

The calculation answers the common question, “How much interest will I earn?” under a specific set of assumptions: the balance is $10,000, the APY is 4%, the period is one year, and neither the rate nor the balance changes. If any of those conditions differ, use the relevant balance, APY, and number of days to make a new estimate—or treat the result as a rough guide rather than a bank statement prediction.
Estimate interest for part of a year
For a different number of days, you can prorate the effective annual yield with this estimate:
Estimated interest = starting balance × ((1 + APY)days/365 − 1)
Use APY as a decimal and the number of days in the period. For instance, enter 0.04 for a 4% APY. This method treats APY as an effective annual yield; it is not a guarantee of the exact amount the bank will post. It assumes the balance does not change and the same APY applies throughout the period.
As another illustration, $10,000 held for 90 days at a constant 4% APY gives an estimated result of about $97 in interest using the formula. The calculation is $10,000 × ((1.04)90/365 − 1). It is not simply the annual $400 divided by four, because this estimate applies the annual yield to the fraction of a year through the exponent. The result remains conditional on the illustrative APY staying in effect and the balance remaining unchanged.
For a period longer than one year, the same expression can estimate the effective yield across the elapsed days if the APY remains constant and there are no transactions. For example, enter the total number of days in the period as the exponent numerator. A multi-year estimate based on today’s variable APY should be read especially cautiously: it assumes the rate does not change for the full period, which the calculation itself cannot establish.

Follow these steps to calculate your estimate
- Find the disclosed APY. Check the rate and APY information for your account and the period you want to estimate. If the rate is variable, treat the result as conditional on it staying unchanged.
- Convert the percentage to a decimal. Divide by 100: for example, 4% becomes 0.04. Do not enter 4 in a formula that expects a decimal APY.
- Choose the time period. For one year, use the one-year multiplication. For a different period, count the days you want to estimate and use the days/365 exponent.
- For a full year with an unchanged balance, multiply balance by APY. A $10,000 balance at an illustrative 4% APY gives an estimated $400.
- For a different number of days, use the effective-annual-yield formula. Calculate starting balance × ((1 + APY)days/365 − 1).
- Adjust your expectations if money moves in or out. A calculation based only on the starting balance is then approximate. The actual result depends on the balance each day and the bank’s accrual and crediting terms.
- Check the account terms before treating the result as account-specific. Confirm which APY applies to your balance, whether there are tiers or fees, and how the institution accrues and credits interest.
If using a calculator, enter the APY in decimal form and preserve the grouping in the formula: add 1 to the decimal APY, raise that result to days divided by 365, subtract 1, and multiply by the starting balance. For a one-year estimate using a constant APY, the shorter calculation is just balance × decimal APY. The formulas estimate earnings; they do not replace the institution’s disclosures or calculate the exact statement amount when the balance or rate changes.
APY, interest rate, and compounding: what the numbers mean
The interest rate is the rate at which the account earns interest under its terms. APY expresses the annual yield while accounting for the effect of compounding over 365 days. Regulation DD sets the definition and calculation rules for APY; the CFPB’s definitions and APY calculation appendix describe those rules.
When comparing disclosed figures or entering a calculation, use APY for the annual-yield estimate rather than treating a nominal interest rate as if it were already the annual yield. APY incorporates the compounding effect under the regulatory calculation rules. The account disclosures remain important because the applicable rate, balance conditions, and payment terms can be specific to an account.
Compounding means interest can earn additional interest after it is added to the account. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau puts it this way: “Compound interest is when you earn interest on the money you’ve saved and on the interest you earn along the way.” The CFPB’s example uses $1,000 at an illustrative 5% rate compounded annually: the balance reaches $1,050 after the first year and $1,102.50 after the second. Those are example calculations, not a current market rate or a recommended account rate. See the CFPB’s explanation of compound interest.
The example shows why interest on interest matters over time: in year two, the annual 5% illustration is applied to a balance that includes the first year’s interest. APY accounts for compounding in its one-year yield figure, so the one-year balance-times-APY estimate already uses the annualized yield rather than requiring you to separately add a compounding adjustment. For periods other than a full year, the effective-annual-yield formula estimates the portion of that yield across the specified days.

Why your actual interest may differ from the estimate
Your APY may change
Many savings account rates are variable. A calculation using the APY shown today assumes it remains in effect for the entire period. If the bank changes the rate, the estimate will no longer match the yield for the full period. Check the account’s current disclosures; no specific account rate is assumed here. CFPB guidance on account disclosures addresses how institutions disclose account terms and yield information.

This matters most when you are projecting farther ahead. A one-year calculation with today’s APY is a useful conditional estimate, not a forecast of what a variable-rate account will pay over the next year. A calculation for several years makes an even stronger assumption that the APY will remain unchanged. If the rate changes during the period, the actual earnings reflect the rates and balances applicable over time, not one rate applied to the entire span.
Deposits and withdrawals change the balance being measured
A one-time starting balance does not capture when you add or remove money. Regulation DD’s APY disclosure calculation assumes no transactions during its assumed term. For an account with transactions, actual earnings depend on the balances over time and the institution’s stated method for accruing interest.
For instance, a $10,000 starting balance is not a complete description if you deposit more money halfway through the period or withdraw some before it ends. The amount added has not been on deposit for the entire period, and the amount withdrawn is no longer part of the balance after the withdrawal. Multiplying only the original starting balance by the APY therefore cannot represent those changing balances exactly. To understand the result, look at the balances during the period and the account’s accrual terms.

The timing of a transaction matters for the same reason. Two savers could begin with the same amount and have the same APY, yet have different balances on different days because their deposits or withdrawals occurred at different times. A single starting-balance formula does not incorporate that timing. Use it as an approximation when money moves, rather than presenting it as the exact interest the account will credit.
Accrual, compounding, and crediting terms vary by account
Accrual describes how interest is calculated; crediting describes when it is added to the account. Institutions can use different compounding and crediting frequencies, and the account disclosures set out the applicable terms. The CFPB’s guidance on payment of interest discusses these requirements. Use the account’s own terms rather than assuming every bank posts interest on the same schedule.
These terms help explain why an estimate based on an APY is not a substitute for the account’s full interest calculation. APY is designed to express an annual yield that accounts for compounding, but the actual posting amount for a particular statement period also depends on the institution’s disclosed accrual and crediting approach and the balances in that period. Check the account agreement or disclosures if you need to know when interest is calculated and when it appears in the account.

Balance methods and the statement period matter
Under the CFPB’s definition, average daily balance is the sum of the principal balances for each day in a period divided by the number of days in that period. Regulation DD permits statement APY-earned calculations under rules using daily-balance or average-daily-balance methods. These methods account for balances through a period more closely than a calculation that assumes one fixed balance; see the definitions and APY calculation appendix.
For a simple illustration of the average-daily-balance definition, imagine a 30-day period with a principal balance of $10,000 for 15 days and $12,000 for the other 15 days. The total of the daily balances is $330,000; divided by 30 days, the average daily balance is $11,000. This example explains the averaging method only. It does not calculate a particular bank’s interest, because the account’s APY, accrual rules, and crediting terms still apply.
Statement periods may also differ from a full 365-day year, so be clear about whether your question is an annual estimate, an estimate for a chosen number of days, or the amount shown on a specific statement. The formula for a chosen period uses the number of days in that period. The institution’s disclosed method determines the actual statement calculation.
Fees, tiers, and eligibility can affect what you earn
Check the account terms for minimum-balance requirements, rate tiers, fees, and any eligibility conditions. A quoted APY may apply only to a particular balance range or under specified conditions. The CFPB’s account-disclosure guidance explains that terms and yield disclosures are account-specific; it does not establish the terms of any named account.
A useful estimate therefore starts with the APY that applies to your own balance, not simply the most prominent APY mentioned in a general comparison. If an account has tiers, confirm which tier covers the balance you plan to keep there and whether a minimum balance or other condition applies. Review fees as a separate term as well: the formula estimates interest from APY, while fees can affect the value of keeping money in the account. Do not assume a fee, tier, or eligibility rule without checking the account’s disclosures.

- Minimum balance and tiers: check whether the APY applies to your expected balance or only to a specified range, and whether minimum-balance requirements affect eligibility.
- Fees and eligibility: read the terms for fees or conditions that could affect the amount you keep or the APY you qualify for.
- Accrual and crediting: find out how interest is calculated and when it is added to the account instead of assuming every institution uses the same schedule.
Comparing APYs alone is not enough to predict an account-specific result if the balance, rate, fees, or terms differ. Use the same balance and time period when making a hypothetical comparison, and state the assumption that each APY remains unchanged. Then inspect the terms behind each disclosed yield. This approach compares the factors the research supports without implying that any one offer is currently available or best.
What to check before relying on an estimate
- The APY that applies to your account and balance range.
- Whether the APY is variable and how a rate change would affect your estimate.
- Minimum balance, tier, eligibility, or fee terms that could alter earnings.
- How the bank accrues interest and when it credits interest to the account.
- Whether you expect deposits or withdrawals during the period, since the balance will not stay fixed.
- The number of days you are estimating and whether you want a projection or an explanation of a specific statement period.
No single calculation can establish what a specific high-yield savings account will pay without its current terms and your transaction history. The formulas provide a useful estimate when their assumptions fit; the account disclosures and balances determine the actual result.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate savings account interest?
For an unchanged balance over one year, multiply the balance by APY expressed as a decimal. For another number of days, estimate interest as starting balance × ((1 + APY)days/365 − 1). These estimates assume the APY remains unchanged and there are no deposits or withdrawals; actual interest depends on account terms and balances over time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow much will $10,000 earn in a high-yield savings account?
It depends on the account’s APY, how long the money stays on deposit, whether the rate changes, and the account terms. As an illustration only, $10,000 at an unchanged 4% APY for one year would earn an estimated $400, for an estimated ending balance of $10,400.
Does APY include compound interest?
APY reflects the interest rate and frequency of compounding over a 365-day period. Compounding means interest can earn additional interest after it is added to the balance. Account disclosures explain the terms that apply to a specific account.
Will I earn the estimated amount if I deposit or withdraw money?
Not necessarily. The simple calculation assumes a fixed starting balance and no transactions. Deposits and withdrawals change the balances over time, so actual earnings depend on those daily balances and the institution’s accrual and crediting terms.
Can I use today’s APY to estimate what I will earn next year?
You can use it for a conditional estimate, but a variable APY may change. The estimate assumes today’s APY stays in effect throughout the period; it is not a promise or forecast of the amount the bank will pay.

The Bottom Line
For a fixed balance and unchanged APY, estimate one-year interest by multiplying the balance by APY as a decimal. For another period, use the days/365 formula. Treat either result as an estimate: variable rates, transactions, balance tiers, fees, and the institution’s accrual and crediting terms can change the actual amount.
