Reports describe mothers and children dying after USAID-supported care was disrupted, but the available evidence does not establish a definitive death toll or prove that Elon Musk personally caused each death. A March 2025 Futurism article reported individual cases; later Associated Press reporting in August 2026 described further deaths and service interruptions. Separate studies estimate possible future deaths under specified funding scenarios. Those estimates are projections, not deaths already counted.
What the March 2025 article reported
Futurism’s March 17, 2025, article by Noor Al-Sibai described several deaths in South Sudan after people lost access to USAID-supported care. The named cases included 10-year-old Peter Donde, who reportedly lost access to medication and contracted pneumonia; 8-year-old Achol Deng; five-year-old Evan Anzoo; and Anzoo’s mother, Jennifer Inyaa. These are reported individual cases, not the results of a comprehensive mortality audit.
Futurism relayed the assessment of Moses Okeny Labani, a local outreach worker, that Donde “would not have died” if USAID had continued funding his medicine. Healthcare employee Margret Amjuma warned, “Many more children will die in the coming weeks.” Volunteer Angelina Doki said, “We are,” Doki concluded, “going to die.” These statements convey what local workers feared and believed about the consequences of interrupted care; they are testimony about specific circumstances, not population-level findings from a formal investigation.
What later reporting adds—and what it cannot establish
An Associated Press report published in August 2026 described additional reported deaths of women and children and interruptions to maternal, neonatal, nutrition, and reproductive-health services associated with foreign-aid cuts. AP also said the full impact may be difficult to measure and that global child-mortality data for 2025 were not yet available when it published. The report adds evidence of reported cases and disrupted services, but it is not a final count of deaths attributable to the cuts.
#1 Best Overall
Deaths occurring after services are disrupted do not, by themselves, establish that the disruption caused each death. The accounts make the consequences of losing care concrete, while the evidence summarized in these reports does not amount to a complete, independently audited global accounting or an individual causal finding for every case.
What the mortality projections mean
Two 2025 Lancet studies estimate possible future mortality under distinct scenarios. Their figures describe modeled additional deaths over time, not deaths already observed. They should not be added together: the studies differ in scope, included causes and countries, and funding assumptions.

| Study and scenario | Modeled estimate | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| The Lancet retrospective impact evaluation and forecasting analysis, published online June 30, 2025; a scenario involving steep USAID funding cuts | More than 14,051,750 additional deaths overall by 2030, including 4,537,157 among children younger than five | Authors’ conditional forecast based on statistical analysis of historical funding and mortality followed by forecasting. The study reports uncertainty intervals; these are projected deaths, not an observed tally. |
| The Lancet modelling study on reductions in US foreign assistance; complete cessation of US funding without replacement across 24 countries, from 2025 to 2030 | 2.5 million additional child deaths from causes other than HIV and tuberculosis | A conditional projection with a different country set, cause coverage, and scenario from the USAID-wide forecast above; it is not a second count to add to that estimate. |
How much responsibility can be assigned to Elon Musk?
The headline “Mothers and Children Are Already Dying Because of Elon Musk’s Cuts” is the title of Futurism’s March 2025 article. The evidence described here concerns reported deaths following care disruptions and modeled consequences of funding scenarios. It does not establish that Musk personally caused each reported death, nor does it provide a definitive cumulative death toll caused by the cuts. Keep those distinctions in view when interpreting both the headline and the larger modeled numbers.

What a reader can conclude
- Journalistic accounts have reported deaths of children and adults after USAID-supported services or care were disrupted.
- Reported cases and local care workers’ assessments are not the same as an independently verified global mortality count or a formal causal determination for each death.
- The large Lancet figures are conditional forecasts of possible additional deaths by 2030, not counts of deaths that have already occurred.
- The reviewed evidence does not settle a definitive cumulative toll or establish Musk’s personal causal responsibility for each case.
