The latest direct comparison here is options-implied volatility through October 3, 2026—not price returns—and it shows different volatility moves, not which token gained more. Avalanche’s reported network activity and institutional use cases offer context, but neither establishes AVAX price performance.
What the available market data does—and does not—show
To call HYPE and AVAX leaders, compare their price returns over the same period with a defined altcoin benchmark. The available sources do not provide that comparable series through October 8, 2026. They therefore cannot establish whether either token rose, outperformed other altcoins, or led a market-wide recovery.
Options-implied volatility answers a different question: how much movement options markets are pricing in. Derivasys Research reported the following one-week at-the-money (ATM) implied-volatility readings:

The October 3 report also said it had identified no qualifying catalyst in the news sources it monitored during that window. That does not prove no catalyst existed; it means the report did not assign one. Neither that note nor the volatility figures explain a price rally.

Why index weights are not a performance ranking
Bitwise’s September 29, 2026 rebalance results listed HYPE at 0.88% of the Bitwise 10 Large Cap Crypto Index and AVAX at 0.22% of the Bitwise 10 Select Large Cap Crypto Index. Because the tokens appear in different index products, those weights are not a head-to-head ranking. What Avalanche activity can tell investors
Avalanche’s institutional materials position the network for payments, settlement, tokenization, capital markets and private credit. The page gives examples of institutional projects and includes partner testimonials. This documents Avalanche’s own ecosystem positioning, not independent evidence that AVAX is rising or that a particular use case caused a token-price move. Avalanche for Institutions

In its Q2 2026 presentation filed with the SEC on August 26, Avalanche Treasury Company reported 235.6 million C-Chain transactions and $84.4 billion in stablecoin transfer volume for the quarter. These are company-reported network figures, not AVAX returns. The same presentation framed market conditions as challenging, stating that “Crypto assets and digital asset public companies have faced significant price pressure amid macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty” and that “AI and data center infrastructure have absorbed a significant share of growth capital and investor attention.” These are the company’s investor-presentation views, not an independent market-wide finding. What would confirm that HYPE or AVAX is leading?
A credible leadership claim needs a like-for-like comparison, not a mix of volatility readings, index weights and network announcements. At minimum, an investor should check:
- Price return: HYPE and AVAX returns over the same start and end dates, using a stated pricing methodology.
- Benchmark-relative return: Each token’s performance against the same broad altcoin benchmark over that exact window.
- Market depth: Trading volume and liquidity, so a short-lived or thinly traded move is not mistaken for broad strength.
- Risk alongside return: Volatility and drawdown over the same period; a large gain accompanied by unusually severe swings has a different risk profile.
- Potential drivers: Separate asset-specific developments from broad market factors, and distinguish verified causes from coincident events.
The sources available here support the volatility comparison and limited index and Avalanche ecosystem context. They do not supply the matched return, benchmark, volume and drawdown data needed to establish leadership through October 8, 2026.
