There is no official, vetted list of private crypto recovery companies, and the FBI, IC3, and FTC do not endorse firms that guarantee stolen cryptocurrency will be returned. A company may analyze blockchain transactions, but a tracing report is not a seizure order and does not prove funds can be recovered. Be especially cautious of unsolicited offers, upfront fees, and requests for passwords, seed phrases, or identity and banking details.
Can a crypto recovery company get your money back?
Sometimes investigators or legal proceedings may help identify or freeze assets, but a private company cannot promise that outcome simply by tracing transactions. The FBI states that “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency.” It also explains that exchanges freeze accounts through their own internal processes or in response to legal process. A transfer that has already been completed should not be treated as reversible.
Blockchain analysis can produce information about where funds moved. That is different from having legal authority to seize assets, persuading an exchange to freeze an account, or obtaining a court remedy. A report—however detailed—does not itself return cryptocurrency.
The FBI identifies exchange action and civil litigation as possible routes, not guaranteed remedies. No company’s website, testimonials, claimed law-enforcement contacts, or paid rankings establish that it can restore your funds.

How recovery scams work
Recovery fraud often targets people who have already lost money. Scammers may contact victims through social media, messaging apps, advertisements, search results, or comments, and may impersonate law enforcement, lawyers, or other officials. Some claim access to a government victim list or special authorization.
The FBI has described a pattern in which a purported recovery firm takes an initial fee, then disappears, provides incomplete or inaccurate tracing, or demands additional fees. The FTC’s advice is direct: “Nobody legit will call, email, send a letter, or contact you on social media with this kind of offer.”

In a June 2024 alert, IC3 reported more than $9.9 million in losses from victims further exploited by fictitious law firms between February 2023 and February 2024. That figure is limited to the reported cases described in the alert; it is not a total for all recovery scams or all victims.
Warning signs to check before responding
- Unexpected contact: Someone approaches you with a recovery offer after your loss, particularly through a social account, message, call, or comment.
- Guaranteed results or special access: The person promises a specific recovery, claims government authorization, or says they can access a victim list or exchange systems.
- Fees before funds are released: They ask for an upfront payment, then another fee, “taxes,” or bank charges. Requests to pay by cryptocurrency, gift card, or wire transfer warrant particular caution.
- Requests for sensitive access: They ask for a wallet seed phrase, password, one-time code, banking credentials, identity documents, or remote access to your device. Do not provide these to an unknown claimant.
- Unverifiable legal or government identity: A logo or official-looking document is not proof. Be wary of pressure to use a purported foreign bank website or to pay a third party in secret.
The FTC suggests searching a company’s name with terms such as “complaint,” “scam,” or “review.” This can surface warning signs, but a lack of negative search results is not proof that a service is legitimate.

How to assess a company or lawyer
Official U.S. sources do not provide a vetted registry of private crypto recovery firms. There is therefore no evidence-based shortlist that can be presented as safe. Screening can help you identify risks, but it cannot certify a company or guarantee an outcome.
- Find out whether the company contacted you or you contacted it through a channel you located independently.
- Ask exactly what it will deliver: transaction analysis, a report, legal representation, or something else. Do not confuse analysis with authority to seize assets.
- Check whether the offer promises recovery, when and how fees are charged, and what happens if no assets are recovered.
- Independently verify any claimed government, law-enforcement, or exchange affiliation through the organization’s official contact details.
If you need legal advice, verify the lawyer’s identity and license with the relevant bar or licensing authority using contact information you found independently. The FBI’s August 2025 warning recommends video verification or law-license documentation and independent confirmation of anyone claiming government employment. It says no law firms are officially authorized partners of U.S. government agencies.

What to do after losing cryptocurrency
- Stop the recovery conversation. Do not pay supposed release fees or taxes, disclose credentials, follow links from the claimant, or install software at their direction. Preserve messages and other records rather than deleting them.
- Contact the exchange you used. Use its official support channel, found independently—not a number or link supplied by a recovery claimant. Report the transaction and ask whether the exchange can take any action. An exchange may freeze an account through internal processes or legal process, but it may not be able to reverse a completed transfer.
- Report the suspected fraud. In the United States, submit a report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or contact a local FBI field office. Report both the original loss and any later recovery approach.
- Include useful transaction and contact details. Gather wallet addresses, asset type and amount, transaction hash, date and time, names and account handles, phone numbers, email addresses, website domains, payment records, and copies of communications. Keep original records where possible.
- Verify anyone claiming to be an official. Contact the agency through a published local office number you find independently. IC3 states that “Law enforcement does not charge victims a fee for investigating crimes.”
- Get independent legal advice if appropriate. For a possible civil claim, consult a lawyer whose identity and license you have verified independently. Litigation is a possible route, not a promise that assets will be found or returned.
