That is a reported geographic correlation—not proof that AI data centers caused the readings, or that they are damaging household appliances. The broader grid challenge is clearer: rapidly growing data-center demand is complicating connections, transmission planning, reliability and decisions about who pays.
What “distorting the grid” means
The phrase refers to several different electrical problems, and they should not be conflated. The original headline was about harmonic distortion: changes to the shape of the normal 60-hertz alternating-current waveform. Power-electronic equipment can add higher-frequency components, or harmonics, to that waveform. Servers, uninterruptible power supplies, variable-speed drives, solar inverters, batteries and electric-vehicle chargers can all contribute if their equipment or the surrounding system does not adequately control them.
Severe or persistent distortion can add heat to transformers, conductors and neutral wires, reduce efficiency, contribute to nuisance trips or interfere with sensitive electronics. Those are possible effects of power-quality problems; they are not evidence that the reported data-center correlation has caused widespread household damage.
- Power quality: the condition of voltage and current at a particular connection, including waveform distortion.
- Supply adequacy: whether enough dependable electricity is available to meet demand.
- Transmission congestion: limits on moving electricity through the network to where it is needed.
Harmonic distortion can occur while the lights stay on. It is not synonymous with a blackout, a shortage of generation or a national grid failure.

What the reported analysis found—and what it did not
A December 2024 Bloomberg analysis, summarized by TechCrunch, compared roughly one million residential power-quality sensors associated with Whisker Labs against data-center location information from DC Byte. It reported that more than half of households with the worst distortion readings were within 20 miles of significant data-center activity. Data Center Dynamics reported that more than three-quarters of highly distorted readings were within 50 miles of large data-center activity, and that Loudoun County had a rate of readings above the analysis’s cited 8% threshold more than four times the average county rate. These are figures reported by the analysis and its coverage, not independently established national safety thresholds.
The Bloomberg analysis indicates an association between proximity and readings; it does not establish that a data center caused them. The available public reporting does not show a controlled before-and-after study, prove that the facilities were AI-specific, or establish that the sensors were electrically downstream of the relevant facilities. Nor does it resolve the possible contributions of local industrial equipment, distribution infrastructure, solar and EV inverters, household wiring, weather or other neighborhood differences.
A Commonwealth Edison spokesperson questioned the accuracy and assumptions behind Whisker Labs’ analysis, according to TechCrunch. That criticism is a reason to treat the result cautiously, not proof that it is false. Public reporting does not establish whether utilities reproduced the result using their own monitoring or whether the same pattern holds after accounting for local conditions.
Whisker Labs describes its harmonic-distortion analysis, but household sensor readings alone cannot identify who is responsible for a reading or demonstrate that a specific home faces danger.

Why data centers concern grid planners
The grid sees a large electrical load, not an algorithm. AI is an accelerant because it is driving the construction of dense computing campuses that can require hundreds of megawatts or more. Conventional cloud computing and other large industrial customers also matter. A facility’s effect depends on its actual demand and electrical design, its connection point, local network strength, and how its load changes—not simply on whether it runs AI.
AI workloads can be started, stopped, moved or throttled, so demand may change quickly. That makes ramp rates and the behavior of multiple facilities relevant to planning. It does not mean ordinary workload changes automatically destabilize the bulk grid. The outcome depends on factors such as the campus’s UPS and power-conversion systems, ride-through settings, on-site generation or batteries, connection voltage, and utility protection and voltage-control practices.
Large campuses also need deliverable electricity at specific locations. If new demand arrives faster than transmission, distribution upgrades and dependable generation can be built, the result can be interconnection delays, constrained capacity or higher costs—even if the campus meets power-quality standards.
Connection, transmission and reliability
Interconnection studies determine what equipment or network upgrades are needed before a large customer can connect. A data center may require dedicated substations and feeders, as well as shared network improvements. Regional resource adequacy asks whether enough dependable generation, transmission capability and demand-side flexibility will be available during stressed conditions. A campus that runs around the clock can add demand at times when other customers’ use also rises, making forecasts and reliable capacity important.

The Department of Energy’s National Transmission Needs Study identifies hyperscale data centers and other large industrial customers as contributors to future transmission needs. DOE’s July 9, 2026 announcement described a draft 2026 study, not a finalized nationwide construction plan. DOE’s resource adequacy work also frames the issue as one of securing sufficient dependable supply as demand grows.
What regulators are doing
The regulatory response shows that large-load integration is an active grid-planning issue, not that the household harmonic claim has been proved. FERC’s February 2025 proceeding examined co-location issues involving data centers and generators in PJM, the regional grid operator serving parts of the eastern United States. In December 2025, FERC directed PJM to create clearer rules for large loads co-located with generating facilities, while addressing reliability and consumer protection.
In June 2026, FERC issued show-cause orders to all six regional grid operators under its jurisdiction, asking them to justify or reform tariffs for data centers and other large loads and to report how adequate generation will be secured for existing and new customers. These actions are proceedings and directives, not a completed nationwide solution. See FERC’s February 2025 order, its December 2025 PJM action, and the June 2026 large-load action and related fact sheet.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s June 2026 review identifies more than 40 potential solutions across forecasting, interconnection, resource planning, market operations and cost allocation. It is a review of possible approaches, not a field trial proving every option works in every setting: Speed to Power: Solutions for Accelerating Large Load Connections.

Who pays for the added grid capacity?
There is no single answer for every project. A data center may fund facilities dedicated to serving it, while the cost of shared network upgrades, generation or capacity procurement can be allocated differently under utility tariffs, regional market rules and regulatory decisions. A project can also affect market prices in a constrained region. Whether those costs fall on the data center alone or are shared with other customers depends on the applicable arrangements; it should not be assumed either that households automatically pay everything or that the data center always pays everything.
- Dedicated facilities: substations, feeders, transformers and interconnection equipment built specifically for a campus.
- Shared network improvements: transmission or distribution upgrades that may serve multiple customers.
- Supply and reliability: generation, contracts, reserves or other services needed to meet demand.
- Forecast and cancellation risk: infrastructure may be built for load that is delayed, reduced or abandoned, raising questions about who bears costs that remain.
FERC’s large-load proceedings address the balance between faster connections and reliability, affordability and consumer protections. The central financial question is how costs and risks are assigned before construction, not simply whether a new campus has a high electricity bill.
How data centers and grid operators can reduce risk
Power-quality engineering
At a facility, engineers can evaluate harmonics and voltage at the point of common coupling—the electrical interface with the utility—and specify measures such as harmonic filters, low-harmonic rectifiers, active power-factor correction, suitable transformers, detuned capacitor banks, grounding improvements and coordinated protection. Monitoring at the facility and connection point helps distinguish a local equipment issue from conditions elsewhere on the network. These measures require a site-specific power-system study; a generic consumer power conditioner is not a substitute.
Planning and connection rules
Utilities and grid operators can improve forecasts by separating funded, construction-ready projects from speculative requests; require milestones and financial security; stage connections; and plan dedicated substations, transmission and regional generation where needed. Conditional or “connect-and-manage” service can let a project connect sooner in some cases, but it may require curtailment during constrained or contingency conditions rather than guaranteeing unrestricted service.

Operational flexibility
Some batch AI training can be shifted across time or location more readily than latency-sensitive inference and customer-facing services. Demand-response contracts, automated load controls, batteries and temporary curtailment can reduce peaks or smooth ramps when designed and tested for the facility. FERC’s 2025 demand-response assessment identifies data centers as potential participants in programs that manage consumption during peak or stressed periods.
None of these measures is automatically beneficial in every configuration. Batteries can help shave peaks but synchronized charging or discharging can create new ramps. On-site generation may reduce imports while introducing fuel, emissions, synchronization, protection and islanding issues. A facility that can curtail still needs clear rules about when and how much it will reduce load.
What households should take away
A nearby data center does not prove that a home has unsafe electricity, and the reported analysis does not establish widespread appliance damage, electrical fires, brownouts or blackouts caused by AI facilities. Those outcomes require evidence beyond a geographic correlation. A persistent household power-quality concern is best investigated with the utility or a qualified electrician; a sensor result by itself cannot assign responsibility.
The most defensible conclusion is narrower than the headline: one contested analysis suggests that residential harmonic readings were more severe near significant data-center activity, but public evidence does not show that AI data centers caused them. Separately, the scale and speed of large-load growth are forcing grid operators and regulators to confront interconnection, transmission, dependable supply, flexibility and cost allocation.
