Apple’s MacBook Neo is a real, available laptop, not a rumor: the company announced it on March 4, 2026, and availability began March 11. It starts at $599 in the U.S. and uses an A18 Pro chip, 8GB of unified memory and 256GB of SSD storage in the base configuration. That price makes it Apple’s entry-level laptop, but the fixed memory and modest storage mean it is best suited to everyday computing, not demanding professional work.
What does the $599 price include?
Apple’s U.S. purchase page listed the MacBook Neo from $599 when checked on August 18, 2026. The price is before sales tax and applies to the base configuration; final cost can change with configuration, accessories, location and retailer offers. Apple also announced a $499 U.S. education price for qualifying education customers—not a general student discount for every buyer. Check the Apple purchase page for the current price and checkout total.

Preorders opened March 4, 2026, and the laptop became available March 11, according to Apple’s availability announcement. Apple displayed an Apple Card Monthly Installments option of $49.91 per month for 12 months at the $599 starting price when the purchase page was checked; approval and applicable terms determine eligibility.
What are the MacBook Neo’s key specifications?
Apple positions the Neo as an affordable macOS laptop for everyday use. Its base configuration pairs an A18 Pro with 8GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. Apple’s testing notes identify a six-core CPU and five-core GPU for the configuration used in its performance comparisons.

Apple’s product information also lists a Magic Keyboard, a large Multi-Touch trackpad and a fanless design. The quiet operation may suit libraries, classrooms and shared spaces. Apple says the enclosure uses 60% recycled content overall and 90% recycled aluminum. For current configuration details, consult Apple’s MacBook Neo comparison page.
How capable is the A18 Pro for laptop work?
The chip name alone does not make the Neo equivalent to an M-series MacBook. Apple’s base configuration has a five-core GPU and 8GB of unified memory, and the laptop is fanless. Those details matter more than the processor family label when deciding whether it suits sustained, memory-intensive tasks.

For browsing, documents, email, streaming, video calls and ordinary multitasking, Apple presents the A18 Pro as adequate. The company also says the Neo is up to 50% faster for everyday tasks such as web browsing than a selected bestselling PC with an Intel Core Ultra 5 processor, up to three times faster for specified on-device AI workloads, and up to twice as fast for certain photo-editing tasks. These are Apple’s comparisons using preproduction systems, selected software and workloads, and chosen comparison hardware—not independent results or a promise that the Neo will outperform every laptop with an Intel chip. Details are in Apple’s launch announcement.
Apple rates battery life at up to 16 hours. That manufacturer estimate was measured on preproduction systems using wireless web browsing and video streaming under specified brightness and Wi-Fi conditions. Actual battery life varies with workload, settings, applications and wireless use.

Where does the low price involve trade-offs?
8GB of unified memory
Eight gigabytes can serve routine school and office work, but it leaves less room for many demanding applications to run at once. Large spreadsheets, numerous browser tabs, creative apps, virtual machines and local AI models may put more pressure on memory. Because unified memory is shared by the system and graphics workloads, it is not a separate pool just for applications. Treat 8GB as a workload constraint, particularly if you expect to keep the laptop for years or your use is likely to become more demanding.
256GB of internal storage
The base SSD may be enough for documents and a cloud-first workflow, but large photo libraries, video files, games, offline media and developer tools can consume local space. An external drive can add capacity, but it does not expand memory and may be inconvenient if you need files available while away from it.

Less headroom for demanding, sustained work
The A18 Pro and fanless design are aimed at everyday computing rather than prolonged professional workloads. If you routinely edit large video projects, build complex software locally, use large audio sample libraries, create 3D work or run virtual machines, compare the Neo with a MacBook Air, a refurbished Mac or another computer suited to that workload. The available specifications do not establish how the Neo performs in every sustained task.

Do not assume that a particular storage tier, Touch ID option, port standard or external-display capability applies to every configuration. Confirm the current details on Apple’s comparison page and purchase page before paying. Accessories such as a hub or external drive are useful only if your devices, displays or storage needs require them.

Who should consider the MacBook Neo?
- Students and families: A relatively low-cost way to get macOS for writing, research, video calls, web services and schoolwork, especially at the qualifying education price.
- First-time Mac buyers and iPhone users: A lower-cost entry to Apple’s laptop software and ecosystem, including iPhone integration and supported Apple Intelligence features.
- People who value quiet portability: The 2.7-pound, fanless aluminum laptop is suited to carrying between home, class and work.
- Buyers with modest local-storage needs: The base model is more compelling if most files are documents or kept in cloud services rather than large local libraries.
It is a weaker match for buyers whose daily work depends on heavy multitasking, professional creative software, local AI models, virtual machines, demanding development environments, extensive local storage or broad Windows game compatibility. Mac application availability and performance vary by app; the 8GB memory limit also affects how much can comfortably run at once.
How does it compare with other budget-computer choices?
| If your priority is… | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The lowest-cost route to macOS | MacBook Neo | It is Apple’s entry-level laptop and starts at $599 in the U.S. |
| More performance or memory and storage headroom | MacBook Air | Compare its current price with the Neo before buying; Apple’s current Air price was not established here. |
| A desktop and you already own peripherals | Mac mini | It avoids paying for a built-in screen, keyboard and battery, but a complete setup may need those items. |
| Browser-first schoolwork and a managed school environment | Chromebook | ChromeOS may fit if local Mac applications are unnecessary and the school already manages Chromebooks. |
| Windows-only software or a wider range of gaming and hardware options | Windows laptop | Windows offers a broader range of manufacturers, configurations and software compatibility. |
| A potentially more capable Mac at a similar effective price | Refurbished Mac | Older M-series models may offer a different performance or memory mix, but inventory, configuration and warranty details vary. |
For the MacBook Air, see Apple’s current product page; for the desktop, see Mac mini; and for Apple-certified used inventory, see refurbished Macs. Compare current prices and specifications rather than assuming an older model or alternative will cost the same.
How can you keep the total cost in view?
The $599 starting price is not necessarily the amount paid at checkout: sales tax, accessories and storage you later add can raise the total. If you have an eligible computer to trade in, Apple Trade In provides a quote based on the device and its condition; no specific credit is guaranteed. AppleCare+ is an optional way to manage service and accidental-damage risk, with coverage and terms varying by product and region; see AppleCare before deciding whether its cost makes sense for a $599 laptop.
