That is not the same as a cancel-anytime rental or a guaranteed free replacement. Since Apple launched its own U.S. Mac leasing program in July 2026, buyers can now compare Upgraded with Apple Upgrade, Apple Card installments, and buying outright. Upgraded’s current price and contract terms are not confirmed here, so check its live offer and agreement before applying.
What is Upgraded?
Upgraded, associated with getupgraded.com, is best described as a financed MacBook purchase with an upgrade option—not a conventional subscription that lets you cancel at any time. Historical coverage described a 36-month payment term, with the option to return the Mac and seek an upgrade after 24 payments. If the customer did not upgrade, that coverage said they could continue paying the remaining 12 months and keep the computer. Those are historical terms, not a confirmation of the offer available in October 2026. AppleInsider’s 2024 coverage was sponsored, so treat its promotional claims accordingly.
Before signing, read the live checkout and financing agreement for the lender, APR, payment schedule, ownership terms, upgrade eligibility, payoff rules, and return conditions. The current Upgraded lender, AppleCare+ inclusion, and exact upgrade process are not established by the historical coverage.

The historical arrangement was a sequence of financing agreements, not an automatic annual or biannual device swap:
- Choose a MacBook configuration. The model, screen size, chip, memory, and storage affect its price and payment.
- Apply for financing. Approval and the APR depend on the lender’s current criteria. Historical coverage named Citizens Pay, but confirm the lender and credit-check terms in the current application.
- Make the scheduled payments. The reported term was 36 months. A missed or uncleared payment may affect eligibility; confirm the contract’s rules.
- Request an upgrade after 24 payments. Eligibility is not the same as an automatic entitlement to a new Mac. Check whether the account must be current, all payments must have cleared, or a new application is required.
- Prepare and return the old Mac. Back up and migrate your data, sign out of Apple services, disable Find My and Activation Lock, and erase the device only when the provider’s instructions say to do so. Confirm the return deadline, shipping responsibility, and inspection process.
- Start the replacement arrangement. Ask whether a new financing agreement or credit approval is required and whether any balance, fee, or condition-related charge carries over.
The details that determine whether this is convenient or costly—return grading, damage charges, shipping, and the result of a late payment—must come from the current contract. Do not assume a damaged Mac can be returned without an added charge.

What happens if you keep the Mac?
Under the historical terms reported in 2024, a customer who skipped the upgrade could continue making the final 12 payments and keep the MacBook. Confirm in the current agreement whether completing every payment transfers ownership, whether a residual or buyout is due, and whether early payoff is allowed. Also check when any AppleCare+ coverage ends and what late-payment or early-return rules apply.
What does it cost?
Published Upgraded prices are historical promotional examples, not verified October 2026 quotes. AppleInsider reported MacBook Air payments from $36.06 per month in 2024; later 2025 sponsored coverage listed an Air from $33.28 per month and a Pro from $52.17 per month. The coverage also described rates “as low as 0% APR,” subject to approval. These figures do not establish today’s price or the cost of a particular configuration. The 2025 coverage was sponsored.

Look beyond the monthly amount. For example, $52.17 multiplied by 36 payments is $1,878.12 before taxes, fees, or any changes in financing terms. That arithmetic alone cannot show whether the offer is a good deal: it does not establish the computer’s configuration, the cost of coverage, what happens to the balance when you upgrade, or the value of keeping the device.

Apple Upgrade: Apple’s U.S. leasing alternative
Apple launched Apple Upgrade in the United States on July 28, 2026. It is a lease administered through Klarna, available through Apple’s online store, Apple Store app, and physical stores. At the lease’s end, customers can upgrade, return the device, or buy it with a one-time payment. Apple advertises 24- and 36-month Mac lease terms, subject to eligibility and model availability. See Apple’s announcement and the Mac buying page for live options.
A lease is not ordinary financing: monthly payments do not necessarily make you the owner. Apple’s example for a $1,999 14-inch MacBook Pro listed $38.99 per month for 36 months or $53.99 per month for 24 months, excluding taxes and trade-in credit. Those are example payments, not universal MacBook prices. Apple says AppleCare can be added separately. Its published terms also exclude MacBook Neo from Apple Upgrade; check the model list at checkout because availability can vary.

How the main choices compare
| Option | Structure and term | Ownership and end-of-term choice | Coverage and eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upgraded | Historical report: 36-month financing, with an upgrade option after 24 payments. | Historical report: continue the final 12 payments and keep the Mac if you do not upgrade. Current ownership and payoff terms: verify in the agreement. | Current lender, AppleCare+ treatment, return rules, and pricing: verify at checkout. |
| Apple Upgrade | Lease through Klarna; Apple advertises 24- or 36-month Mac terms, subject to availability. | At lease end, upgrade, return, or buy for a one-time payment; lease payments do not by themselves establish ownership. | Apple says AppleCare can be added separately. Approval is subject to Klarna; eligible models vary. |
| Apple Card Monthly Installments | Apple advertises 0% APR for eligible Mac purchases over 12 months. | Financed as a purchase; no program return is required after two years. | Requires Apple Card eligibility. Apple trade-in may reduce the purchase amount. See Apple’s financing page. |
| Buy outright or trade in | Pay the purchase price upfront; a trade-in can reduce the new Mac’s cost. | Own the Mac and choose when to sell, trade, or replace it. | No financing approval. Trade-in value varies by model and condition; check Apple Trade In. |
Which option fits your plans?
A two-year upgrader
If you reliably replace your computer every two years and dislike private resale, an upgrade program may suit your routine. Compare the total cost and contract obligations, not just the payment. A return-based plan is less appealing if you want to keep the old Mac, or if you cannot tolerate inspection and return requirements.

Apple Card Monthly Installments may suit an eligible buyer who wants to own the Mac and can manage the 12-month payment schedule. Buying outright avoids credit approval and recurring payments. Apple trade-in can offset a new purchase, but its offer depends on the old Mac’s model and condition.

A long-term owner
If you keep a laptop for five years or longer, paying for a built-in replacement cycle may not match how you use it. Compare buying a Mac you can keep with the total cost of repeatedly financing or leasing replacements. A longer ownership period also leaves you free to trade or sell on your own schedule.

Approval is not guaranteed for either financing or leasing. Historical Upgraded coverage described an initial eligibility check that might not affect a credit score and a full application that could involve a hard inquiry; verify the current lender’s disclosures before submitting an application. Apple says Apple Upgrade applicants receive a soft credit inquiry that does not affect their credit score, with approval handled by Klarna.

Do not treat “AppleCare included” as a current Upgraded benefit without seeing it in the offer and agreement. Historical promotional coverage said AppleCare+ was included, but current inclusion, price, deductibles, coverage dates, and what happens when you return or replace the Mac need confirmation. AppleCare+ terms and prices depend on the Mac and plan; consult Apple’s U.S. Mac AppleCare+ terms. Do not assume coverage includes theft or loss.
