Do not call the phone number or click the link in an unexpected message claiming that an Apple Pay transaction has been blocked. A reported phishing campaign impersonates Apple, creates urgency around a supposedly high-value payment, and directs recipients to a fraudulent support number or website. The goal is to steal Apple Account passwords, verification codes, card details, banking information, or access to the device.
This is social engineering—not evidence that Apple Pay itself has been hacked. The safest response is to open Wallet yourself, check your card issuer’s official app, and contact the bank using a trusted number.

How the Apple Pay scam works
The campaign reported by Macworld on February 4, 2026, follows a familiar sequence:
- You receive an email or message using Apple-like logos, formatting, and language.
- It claims that an expensive Apple Pay payment came from an unfamiliar device or location.
- The message says the transaction is temporarily blocked and will go through unless you act quickly.
- You are told to call a phone number, click a link, or confirm the transaction.
- The fake “support” agent or website asks for passwords, verification codes, card numbers, banking details, device passcodes, or remote access.
The exact wording, sender address, amount, and phone number can change. These are reported characteristics of one campaign, not a fixed script used in every Apple Pay scam.

Is Apple Pay hacked?
There is no evidence in the available reporting that Apple Pay has been technically compromised. The described attack depends on persuading the victim to disclose information or approve an action.
Apple Pay uses device authentication, a Device Account Number, and a transaction-specific security code instead of sending the full card number to the merchant. That design helps protect payment details, but it cannot prevent someone from impersonating Apple and tricking a user into handing over an Apple Account password, card information, or a security code. Apple Pay, Apple Card, and your bank are not the same thing
Apple Pay is Apple’s wallet and payment service. It can store eligible cards issued by banks and other participating financial institutions.

Apple Card is a separate credit-card product with its own account and support process. A scam message may use the familiar “Apple Pay” name while actually targeting your Apple Account, a bank card, or unrelated financial information.
Apple says Apple Pay transactions are routed to the card issuer for approval. If a card payment is declined, the issuer—not Apple—controls that approval decision. A message claiming Apple can “release” a pending card payment after you call a supplied number is therefore a major warning sign. See Apple’s guidance on declined Apple Pay payments.
How to check whether the charge is real
Never investigate by using the contact details in the message.

On an iPhone
- Open Wallet yourself.
- Tap the relevant card.
- Review the recent transactions.
- Tap a transaction for more information or to report an issue.
On Apple Watch
- Open Wallet.
- Tap the card.
- Review the transaction list.
On a Mac with Touch ID
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Select the card and open the Transactions tab.
Apple notes that transaction history may be unavailable in some countries and may not be complete. For the authoritative status of a charge, use your card issuer’s official app or call the number on the physical card, a statement, or the issuer’s official website. Apple’s transaction-history instructions are on its support page.
- The charge appears in Wallet: Contact the card issuer independently.
- The charge appears only in the message: Treat the message as unverified.
- No charge appears anywhere: It is likely an attempted scam, but continue watching your accounts.
Red flags to look for
- An unexpected alert about a high-value Apple Pay purchase.
- A demand to act within minutes or hours.
- A phone number supplied by the message.
- A request to reply to “confirm” or “cancel” a payment.
- A sender display name that does not match the actual email address.
- A link whose real destination is not an official Apple domain.
- Awkward wording, generic greetings, or unusual personalization.
- A request for your Apple Account password, card number, security code, bank login, or device passcode.
- A request to approve an unfamiliar two-factor authentication prompt.
- A request to disable two-factor authentication or Stolen Device Protection.
- A request to install software, a configuration profile, or remote-access tools.
- A demand to transfer money or buy gift cards to “secure” the account.
Caller ID is not proof that a call is genuine: scammers can spoof trusted numbers. They may also know personal details about you. Apple warns that misleading URLs, urgency, fake support calls, and requests for passwords or security codes are common social-engineering tactics. What Apple will not ask you to provide
Apple says it will not ask for your Apple Account password, device passcode, recovery key, or two-factor authentication code. It also will not ask you to enter those details into a website someone directed you to.

Apple may send legitimate account or purchase communications in some circumstances, so the safest rule is not that every Apple email is fake. Instead, verify independently and use an Apple Support address or app that you navigate to yourself.
What to do if you receive the message
- Do not click links, open attachments, reply, or call the supplied number.
- Do not approve an unexpected Apple Account sign-in prompt.
- Check Wallet manually.
- Check the card issuer’s official app or website.
- Call the bank using a trusted number.
- Preserve the message, sender address, phone number, links, and screenshots.
- Forward suspicious Apple email or SMS to [email protected].
- Report fraud in the United States to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
If you already interacted with the scam
You clicked but entered nothing
Close the page, download nothing, and do not install a profile or remote-access app. Update your device and apps, and watch for follow-up calls or messages. Clicking a phishing link does not automatically mean your account was compromised, but it can identify you as a potential target.

- Change the password immediately from your device settings or by manually navigating to Apple’s account site.
- Confirm that two-factor authentication is enabled.
- Review devices associated with the account and remove unfamiliar ones.
- Check trusted phone numbers and account-recovery details.
- Review Wallet, iCloud, email, and other account activity.
- Contact Apple through an official support channel if access is uncertain.
You shared a verification code or approved a login
Treat this as urgent. Change the Apple Account password, remove unknown devices, contact Apple Support, and notify your bank and card issuer. Monitor for unauthorized purchases and account-recovery attempts. Do not trust a later caller who claims to be helping reverse the incident.

You shared card or bank information
- Call the issuer immediately using a trusted number.
- Ask whether the card should be frozen or replaced.
- Review pending and completed transactions.
- Report unauthorized transactions through the issuer’s fraud process.
- Change exposed banking credentials and any reused passwords.
- Report the incident to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
You installed software or a configuration profile
End any remote-access session and uninstall software installed at the scammer’s direction. On iPhone or iPad, check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management for an unfamiliar profile. Change passwords from a clean device if possible and contact Apple Support. Consider professional help if the device is used for banking, work, or other sensitive accounts.
The safest rule
An Apple Pay alert can look official while the real target is your identity, Apple Account, bank account, or card details. Do not let a fake deadline choose your next action. Open Wallet yourself, contact the card issuer independently, and reach Apple only through an official channel that you locate yourself.
