What the Apple Card virtual number is—and is not
The Apple Card virtual card number is designed for manually entered online and in-app payments when Apple Pay is unavailable. Apple says it can be used wherever Mastercard is accepted, subject to the usual account, merchant, device, and transaction restrictions.

- Virtual card number: The number you enter at an online checkout or in an app that does not accept Apple Pay.
- Titanium-card number: The number associated with the physical Apple Card. The full number is not printed on the titanium card.
- Apple Pay card number: A device-specific number used when you pay through Apple Pay. It is not the same as the virtual number displayed in Wallet.
Apple’s product page has long described a virtual number for apps and websites that do not accept Apple Pay. The current capability should therefore be understood as an existing Apple Card feature, not merely a future announcement. See Apple’s Apple Card overview and card-number instructions.
How to find your Apple Card virtual card number
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
- Tap Apple Card.
- Tap the card number icon.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode.
- View the virtual card number, expiration date, and security code.
Apple’s menu labels can vary by device and operating-system version. If the card-number control is missing, Apple says you may need the latest applicable version of iOS or iPadOS. Also confirm that you are viewing Apple Card—not Apple Cash or another card in Wallet.
On supported devices and browsers, Safari AutoFill may supply saved payment details during checkout. Otherwise, enter the virtual number, expiration date, and security code manually.
How to request a new Apple Card virtual number
- Open Wallet.
- Tap Apple Card.
- Tap the card number icon.
- Authenticate.
- Tap Request New Card Number.
Request a replacement if the number may have been exposed, you suspect unauthorized access, or you no longer trust a merchant where the number was saved. If you believe the account itself may be compromised, Apple also advises considering locking Apple Card, requesting a new virtual number, or closing the account. Follow Apple’s account-compromise guidance.
What changes after you request a new number?
Apple documents the ability to request a new virtual number, but its cited support material does not clearly specify every downstream effect. It does not establish that:
- all pending authorizations using the old number will remain valid;
- every refund will automatically follow the replacement number;
- all subscriptions will update without action; or
- every merchant will immediately reject the old number.
After replacement, review merchants, subscriptions, recurring bills, digital wallets, and online accounts where the old number was saved. Update those payment methods with the new details. Keep monitoring the Apple Card transaction feed, and contact an Apple Card Specialist if a refund, recurring payment, or pending transaction becomes a problem.

Advanced Fraud Protection is different
Apple Card also offers Advanced Fraud Protection. When enabled, it periodically changes the card’s three-digit security code after the code has been viewed in Wallet or autofilled from Safari. It does not necessarily replace the entire virtual card number.
- Open Wallet and tap Apple Card.
- Tap the card number icon and authenticate.
- Scroll to Advanced Fraud Protection.
- Turn the feature on.
Apple says recurring purchases and subscriptions generally are not affected by changing the security code because those merchants typically use it during initial enrollment. You should still retrieve the current code before making a new manual online purchase. Advanced Fraud Protection is an additional security control, not a guarantee that fraud cannot occur. See Apple’s Advanced Fraud Protection instructions.
Apple Pay or the virtual number: which should you use?
| Situation | Usually the practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Pay is available | Apple Pay | It is generally faster and uses a device-specific payment credential rather than having you type card details into the merchant form. |
| Apple Pay is unavailable | Apple Card virtual number | It lets you pay online or in an app while keeping the physical card’s full number out of the checkout form. |
| The merchant requires a physical-card transaction | Titanium Apple Card | Use the physical card where the merchant accepts Mastercard and the transaction cannot be completed online. |
Apple Card rewards can differ depending on how a purchase is made, so check the current Apple Card terms for the relevant merchant and transaction. Do not assume that manually entering the virtual number earns exactly the same reward as using Apple Pay.

- Requires two 6 pin visor power cables

Neither method should be described as universally “safer.” Apple Pay uses device-specific credentials and transaction security, while the virtual number provides compatibility at merchants that do not support Apple Pay and can be replaced on request.

The card-number icon is missing
- Update iOS or iPadOS to the latest applicable version.
- Confirm Apple Card has been added to Wallet.
- Authenticate with your device passcode or biometrics.
- Make sure you selected Apple Card rather than Apple Cash or another Wallet card.
- Contact Apple Card support if the control remains unavailable.
An online purchase is declined
- Recheck the virtual number, expiration date, and security code.
- If Advanced Fraud Protection is enabled, retrieve the current security code again.
- Confirm the merchant accepts Mastercard.
- Check whether Apple Card is locked or subject to a fraud review.
- Try Apple Pay if the merchant supports it.
- Contact Apple Card support for an account-specific explanation.
These are practical troubleshooting steps, not a universal Apple decline-diagnosis process; the cause can depend on the merchant and account.

A subscription fails after replacement
Check services that stored the old virtual number and update each payment method. Do not assume that every recurring merchant migrates automatically. Changing a security code through Advanced Fraud Protection is a different event and generally does not have the same effect as replacing the entire card number.

A refund does not appear
Check the original transaction and the merchant’s refund status first. Ask the merchant how the refund was issued, then contact Apple Card support if it does not appear within the merchant’s stated processing period. Apple’s cited documentation does not promise that every refund will automatically follow a replaced number.
Apple Card Family and account details
Apple says each co-owner on an Apple Card Family account has their own virtual card number. Do not assume that all participants share identical card details, or that replacing one person’s number automatically replaces every number connected with the family account.
Availability and issuer context
Apple Card is available to qualifying applicants in the United States and is subject to credit approval. Its features require adding the card to Wallet on a supported iPhone or iPad with the applicable current operating system. The virtual number is intended for Mastercard-accepting merchants; Apple Card itself is not a product available to applicants worldwide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAs of September 2026, Apple’s support materials identify Goldman Sachs Bank USA as the current issuer and service partner while Apple’s announced transition to Chase remains underway. Apple has not established a settled completion date in the cited material, so issuer descriptions should be date-stamped. See Apple’s Chase transition announcement and transition information.
Bottom line
Apple Card already gives you a reusable virtual card number for online purchases that do not support Apple Pay. Find it in Wallet under Apple Card’s card-number icon, and use Request New Card Number if the number may be compromised. Use Apple Pay where it is accepted, use the virtual number when it is not, and treat number replacement separately from Advanced Fraud Protection’s rotating security code.
