The Apple M4 Mac mini is already available. Apple announced the redesigned desktop on October 29, 2024, opened pre-orders the same day, and began shipping it on November 8, 2024. At launch, the M4 model started at $599 and the M4 Pro model at $1,399 in the United States. Apple’s U.S. store listings checked on August 16, 2026, showed the Mac mini from $799 and M4 Pro configurations from $1,599.
The main buying decision is not simply M4 versus M4 Pro. You must also budget for a display and input devices, choose enough unified memory because it cannot normally be upgraded later, and decide whether the base 256GB SSD is practical for your files and applications.

Quick answer
The 2024 Mac mini is Apple’s smallest desktop Mac, measuring approximately 5 by 5 by 2 inches. The base M4 model is the sensible choice for office work, browsing, coding, photography, and most home setups. The M4 Pro is aimed at sustained compiling, professional video work, 3D rendering, local AI experimentation, large multitasking workloads, and users who need Thunderbolt 5 or more memory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Neither model is an all-in-one computer. The box includes the Mac mini and power cord, but not a monitor, keyboard, mouse, trackpad, HDMI cable, USB-C cable, or Ethernet cable. The advertised starting price is therefore not the complete cost of a usable desktop.

Both versions have HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet configurable to 10Gb Ethernet, a 3.5mm headphone jack with high-impedance headphone support, and two front USB-C ports. The front ports support USB 3 at up to 10Gb/s; they are not additional Thunderbolt ports.
What changed in the redesign?
The enclosure is dramatically smaller than the preceding Mac mini design, with an approximately 5-inch square footprint and a height of about 2 inches. It has a silver finish, a built-in speaker, and front USB-C ports that are easier to reach for temporary connections such as an external drive or phone.
The rear still contains HDMI, Ethernet, and three high-speed USB-C ports. M4 Pro models upgrade those rear ports from Thunderbolt 4 to Thunderbolt 5. That difference matters for compatible high-bandwidth storage, docks, and professional workflows, but connecting a Thunderbolt 5 dock to an M4 model does not give the M4 Thunderbolt 5 capability.

Several permanent peripherals may require a hub or dock, and media libraries, backups, and project files may need external storage.
Display support: “up to three” is not one universal setup
The number of displays depends on the resolution, refresh rate, port used, cable standard, and any dock or adapter in the chain.
M4 display combinations
- Two displays up to 6K at 60Hz over Thunderbolt, plus one 5K display over Thunderbolt or one 4K display over HDMI; or
- One display up to 5K over Thunderbolt, plus one display up to 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 240Hz over Thunderbolt or HDMI.
M4 Pro display combinations
- Up to three 6K displays at 60Hz; or
- One 6K display plus one 8K display at 60Hz or one 4K display at 240Hz, subject to Apple’s supported combinations.
Do not assume that three inexpensive USB-C monitors will automatically reproduce these theoretical limits. A hub can introduce bandwidth sharing, power limits, display restrictions, and cable requirements. Verify the exact monitor, dock, and cable combination before budgeting for a multi-display desk.
Which model should you buy?
Choose the base M4 for general use
The M4 is the better value for office applications, browsing, email, video calls, general coding, photography, light to moderate video editing, home servers, media systems, and ordinary multitasking. It also provides the smallest entry price and supports up to three displays in supported configurations.
For many buyers, the best M4 purchase is not necessarily the cheapest one. If you expect to keep the computer for several years or use virtual machines, Docker containers, large development projects, or creative applications, consider increasing memory before increasing storage.
Choose M4 with more memory for long-term flexibility
Unified memory is shared by the CPU, GPU, and applications. It is efficient, but memory is a purchase-time decision rather than a conventional user-upgrade path. The M4 supports 16GB, 24GB, or 32GB configurations.
Sixteen gigabytes is reasonable for mainstream productivity. More memory is sensible for virtual machines, software development, large creative projects, frequent multitasking, and buyers who want additional headroom. The M4 Pro starts at 24GB and can be configured with 48GB or 64GB.

Choose M4 Pro for sustained professional workloads
M4 Pro is justified when the computer will regularly handle sustained CPU- or GPU-heavy work: large software builds, professional high-resolution video editing, 3D rendering, simulations, local AI model experimentation, or unusually large multitasking workloads.
It is also the relevant choice if you need Thunderbolt 5, 48GB or 64GB of unified memory, or demanding high-resolution display arrangements. Apple’s “up to” performance claims are based on Apple-selected comparisons and benchmarks; they should not be treated as independent test results or as a guarantee that every application will scale equally.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Is the 256GB SSD enough?
The 256GB base drive can work for cloud-first users, web browsing, office applications, and a simple home-office setup—especially if projects and media live on external or network storage.
It becomes restrictive much sooner if the Mac will store video libraries, local Photos libraries, Xcode and multiple development toolchains, virtual machines, games, audio sample libraries, or local AI models. macOS, applications, caches, and temporary files also need working space.
You have four practical options:
- Buy a larger internal SSD: convenient and tidy, but more expensive at purchase.
- Add a fast external SSD: often more economical and flexible, though it occupies desk space and requires a suitable cable.
- Use network-attached storage: useful for shared media and backups, but dependent on network performance and setup.
- Prioritize memory first: choose enough unified memory for your workload, then expand storage externally if necessary.
Apple’s specifications confirm the available capacities but do not establish a universal real-world speed advantage between 256GB and 512GB models. Do not pay for a larger internal drive solely because you assume it is always faster without independent testing relevant to your workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The standard package includes:
- Mac mini
- Power cord
A display, keyboard, mouse, trackpad, HDMI cable, USB-C cable, and Ethernet cable are not standard inclusions. A first-time buyer should price the entire workstation, not just the computer.
The real cost of owning one
A low advertised price is most attractive when you already own compatible peripherals. Otherwise, budget for:
- A monitor, such as a third-party 4K display or Apple Studio Display;
- A keyboard and pointing device;
- Display and data cables;
- A hub or dock if the rear ports are insufficient;
- External storage and a backup destination;
- Optional 10Gb Ethernet if your network supports it;
- Potential AppleCare+ or other service coverage.
Apple lists the Studio Display from $1,599 on its current product pages, but a third-party 4K monitor can reduce the total setup cost substantially. Apple accessories are convenient but not required; compatible USB and Bluetooth alternatives can cost less.
Common buying mistakes
- Buying the base SSD without a storage plan: 256GB can fill quickly with development tools, local media, or virtual machines.
- Assuming RAM can be upgraded later: choose memory based on the computer’s expected lifespan and workload.
- Counting three displays without checking resolutions: port and refresh-rate combinations determine what actually works.
- Budgeting only for the Mac: the computer does not include a display or input devices.
- Assuming a Thunderbolt 5 dock upgrades an M4: Thunderbolt 5 is tied to the M4 Pro configuration.
- Buying M4 Pro automatically: extra performance has little financial value if your workload is mainly browser, office, and email use.
- Confusing launch and current prices: $599 was the M4 launch price in 2024, not the current Apple U.S. starting price checked in August 2026.
Alternatives worth considering
MacBook Air or MacBook Pro: These make more financial sense if you need a built-in display, keyboard, trackpad, battery, speakers, and portability. Apple’s current Mac shopping results listed MacBook Air from $1,299, but prices vary by configuration and date.
Recommended Free Tools
Mac Studio: Apple positions it for buyers who need more sustained performance and workstation-class headroom. Its current Apple shopping-page starting signal was $2,499, making it difficult to justify for ordinary office work—especially when a display and peripherals are still required.
Windows mini PC: A Windows system may offer easier RAM or storage upgrades, broader gaming compatibility, and lower-cost expansion. It may be preferable if internal upgradeability matters more than macOS, Apple’s ecosystem, or the Mac mini’s compact design.
Refurbished Mac mini: Apple’s refurbished inventory can reduce the cost of a specific configuration, but stock is variable. Treat refurbished prices as temporary offers rather than permanent MSRP.
Final recommendation
For most buyers who already own a monitor and peripherals, choose the M4 Mac mini. If you expect several years of development, creative work, or heavy multitasking, spend first on additional memory and use external storage when that is more economical.
Choose M4 Pro when sustained professional workloads, high-resolution multi-display use, Thunderbolt 5, or 48GB-plus memory requirements justify the premium. The compact design is excellent value only when you account for the complete desk setup and make realistic decisions about memory and storage.
