The M4 iPad Air is a real, released product—not a rumor. Apple announced it on March 2, 2026, opened preorders on March 4, and began customer deliveries and store availability on March 11. It comes in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. U.S. launch prices started at $599 and $799, but Apple’s U.S. store listed higher prices—$749 and $949—when checked on August 18, 2026.
The main upgrade is Apple’s M4 chip, joined by 12GB of unified memory, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and updated cellular hardware. The choice that matters most for buyers is not the processor alone: it is whether the larger 13-inch screen, extra storage or cellular connectivity justifies the additional cost.

M4 iPad Air price: launch versus current U.S. pricing
There is an important price distinction. Apple launched the 11-inch Wi-Fi model at $599 and the 13-inch Wi-Fi model at $799. Those were the advertised U.S. starting prices at launch.
Apple’s current U.S. buying page listed different prices when checked on August 18, 2026. Because Apple can change prices and promotions, treat the following as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent price guarantee.
Launch prices
| Model | Starting configuration | U.S. launch price |
|---|---|---|
| 11-inch | Wi-Fi | $599 |
| 13-inch | Wi-Fi | $799 |
Apple said those starting prices matched the previous generation’s launch pricing.
Apple U.S. prices checked August 18, 2026
| Model | 128GB Wi-Fi | 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular |
|---|---|---|
| 11-inch | $749 | $899 |
| 13-inch | $949 | $1,099 |
The Wi-Fi + Cellular configuration costs $150 more than the comparable Wi-Fi model. That is only the hardware premium: cellular buyers may also need a recurring carrier data plan. These iPads use cellular data and are not phones with ordinary voice service.
Storage pricing shown for Wi-Fi models
| Storage | 11-inch Wi-Fi | 13-inch Wi-Fi |

| 128GB | $749 | $949 |
| 256GB | $849 | $1,049 |
| 512GB | $1,049 | $1,249 |
| 1TB | $1,349 | $1,549 |
Apple lists Wi-Fi + Cellular versions at $150 above the corresponding Wi-Fi configuration. Check the live Apple buying page before purchasing, particularly if you are comparing a sale price, trade-in offer or education promotion.

M4 chip and performance specifications
According to Apple’s technical specifications, the M4 iPad Air includes:
- 8-core CPU with 3 performance cores and 5 efficiency cores.
- 9-core GPU.
- Hardware-accelerated ray tracing.
- 16-core Neural Engine.
- 12GB of unified memory.
- 120GB/s memory bandwidth.
- Hardware-accelerated decoding for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, ProRes RAW and AV1.
Apple claims the M4 model is up to 2.3 times faster than the iPad Air with M1 and delivers more than four times faster 3D rendering with ray tracing than the M1 model. Those are Apple’s own “up to” claims based on Apple testing, not independent benchmark results. Real-world gains depend on the app, workload and older iPad being replaced.
The M4 gives the Air substantial processing headroom for video editing, graphics work, multitasking and demanding games. It does not make the iPad Air identical to an iPad Pro. The two product lines still differ in display technology and other hardware features.
11-inch versus 13-inch display
Both models use a Liquid Retina display with LED-backlit IPS technology, Wide color (P3), True Tone, full lamination, an antireflective coating and Apple Pencil hover support. Both work with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil USB-C.
| Specification | 11-inch | 13-inch |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 2360 × 1640 | 2732 × 2048 |
| Pixel density | 264 pixels per inch | 264 pixels per inch |
| Brightness | 500 nits | 600 nits |
| Apple’s stated actual diagonal | 10.86 inches | 12.9 inches |
The 13-inch model’s advantage is workspace, not sharper text: both have the same pixel density. The larger canvas is useful for split-screen apps, documents, spreadsheets, drawing, PDFs and video editing.
Apple’s specifications identify the panel as a Liquid Retina IPS display. Do not buy it expecting the same display system as an iPad Pro; the Air should not be described as having ProMotion, mini-LED or OLED based on the supplied specifications.
Size and weight
| Specification | 11-inch | 13-inch |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | 9.74 × 7.02 × 0.24 inches | 11.04 × 8.46 × 0.24 inches |
| Wi-Fi weight | 1.02 lb / 464g | 1.36 lb / 616g |
| Wi-Fi + Cellular weight | 1.03 lb / 465g | 1.36 lb / 617g |
| Thickness | 0.24 inch / 6.1mm | 0.24 inch / 6.1mm |
The difference is noticeable in everyday use. The 11-inch version is easier to hold for reading, note-taking and travel. The 13-inch version is still thin, but its larger body and 1.36-pound weight make it better suited to a desk, keyboard case or lap than prolonged one-handed use.

This is a useful camera system for meetings, online classes, document scanning and ordinary tablet photography. It is not a substitute for a dedicated camera when image quality, optical zoom or low-light performance are the priority.
Connectivity: Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and cellular
All configurations include Apple’s N1 wireless networking chip, Wi-Fi 7—technically listed as 802.11be with 2×2 MIMO—Bluetooth 6 and Thread networking technology.
Wi-Fi 7 is a compatibility feature, not a guarantee of faster internet. Actual performance depends on the router, broadband service, network configuration, distance, interference and regional conditions. You need compatible networking equipment to benefit from Wi-Fi 7 features.

Wi-Fi + Cellular models add:
- Apple C1X cellular modem.
- 5G sub-6GHz.
- Gigabit LTE.
- eSIM support.
Apple’s specifications say the cellular models do not support a physical SIM card. They are data-only iPads, so buyers must arrange a compatible carrier plan. Choose cellular if you regularly work away from reliable Wi-Fi and want a dedicated connection. Choose Wi-Fi if you can tether occasionally from a phone or usually work at home, school, an office or other dependable networks.
USB-C, external displays and storage devices
The iPad Air has a USB-C port supporting USB 3 data transfer up to 10Gb/s and native DisplayPort output. It can drive one external display at up to 6K resolution at 60Hz.

VGA, HDMI and DVI displays require separately sold adapters. The port can also matter to photographers, videographers and other users who plan to connect external storage or accessories. A USB-C port alone does not mean every peripheral will work at full speed; the accessory, cable and app can impose their own limits.
Battery life
The 11-inch model has a 28.93-watt-hour battery, while the 13-inch model has a 36.59-watt-hour battery. Apple rates both for up to 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi or video playback, and up to 9 hours of web use on cellular networks.
These are Apple estimates, not independent battery-test results. Brightness, cellular reception, app activity, accessories and background processes affect actual battery life.
Software and Apple Intelligence
The M4 iPad Air ships with iPadOS 26 and supports Apple Intelligence. Availability and behavior can depend on the software version, supported language, country or region and the specific feature being used. “Supports Apple Intelligence” should not be read as a promise that every feature is available to every user immediately.
11-inch or 13-inch: which should you buy?
| Consideration | 11-inch | 13-inch |
|---|---|---|
| Portability | Better for handheld use and travel | Less convenient to carry and hold |
| Workspace | Enough for ordinary tablet productivity | Better for multitasking, documents and creative work |
| Wi-Fi weight | 1.02 lb | 1.36 lb |
| Launch Wi-Fi price | $599 | $799 |
| Current Apple U.S. starting price checked August 18, 2026 | $749 | $949 |
| Brightness | 500 nits | 600 nits |
Choose the 11-inch model if:
- You will read, browse, stream, take notes or travel with the tablet frequently.
- You already have a laptop or desktop for intensive work.
- You expect to hold the iPad rather than keep it on a desk.
- The 13-inch model’s $200 size premium is difficult to justify.
Choose the 13-inch model if:
- Split-screen multitasking is central to your workflow.
- You work with spreadsheets, PDFs, documents, drawings or video timelines.
- You want a larger canvas without moving to the iPad Pro range.
- You are comfortable with the extra size and weight.
How much storage do you need?
- 128GB: Suitable for web use, streaming, documents, notes, moderate app use and cloud-based workflows. It is also a meaningful capacity increase for owners of older Air models that started with less storage.
- 256GB: The safer general-purpose option for students, professionals and people who keep more photos, games or offline media locally.
- 512GB: Better for large creative projects, extensive downloads and larger app libraries.
- 1TB: Best reserved for unusually large local media collections or demanding creative workflows.
Storage cannot be upgraded later, so consider the size of downloaded video, games, photos and creative files rather than choosing only by the processor.

Apple’s buying information says the box includes the iPad Air, a USB-C charge cable and a 20W USB-C power adapter. Accessories, a cellular plan and optional services such as AppleCare+ are separate costs. Accessory and service prices can change, so they should be checked directly rather than inferred from the tablet’s headline price.
What changed from the previous iPad Air?
The material changes are:
- The previous-generation processor is replaced by M4.
- Apple lists 12GB of unified memory.
- The starting storage capacity is 128GB.
- The N1 chip brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
- Cellular versions use Apple’s C1X modem and eSIM connectivity.
- Apple continues to offer both 11-inch and 13-inch sizes.
The upgrade is most compelling for owners of an older iPad Air who need more performance, more local storage, newer wireless connectivity or a larger screen. Someone with a recent iPad Air who mainly browses, streams and takes notes may notice less practical benefit from upgrading immediately.
Is the M4 iPad Air worth buying?
For students and general productivity: Yes, especially if you want a long performance runway, Apple Pencil support and a tablet that can handle demanding apps. The 11-inch model is the better value for regular handheld use; the 13-inch model makes more sense for document-heavy work.
For creators: The M4 and USB-C display support make the Air capable for many editing, drawing and graphics workflows. Consider the iPad Pro instead if the display experience and other high-end features matter more than the Air’s value proposition.
For owners of an older Air: The upgrade is easier to justify if your current iPad has limited storage, feels slow in demanding apps or lacks the connectivity and accessory support you need. If your current model already handles your work comfortably, the higher current price reduces the urgency.
For basic users: If your needs are mostly browsing, streaming, email and simple notes, compare the total price with the entry-level iPad before paying for M4 performance you may not use.
For cellular buyers: Choose Wi-Fi + Cellular only when independent connectivity is genuinely valuable. The $150 hardware premium does not include the recurring carrier cost, and the iPad uses eSIM rather than a physical SIM.
Bottom line
The M4 iPad Air combines a high-end Apple processor with a more affordable product line, two useful screen sizes and modern wireless connectivity. Pick the 11-inch model for portability and lower cost, the 13-inch model for workspace, and Wi-Fi unless you regularly need a dedicated mobile data connection. Most importantly, base the decision on Apple’s current price—not the $599 and $799 launch prices—and budget separately for storage upgrades, accessories and cellular service.
