The announcement included tuition relief for the class then in the program and a goal to expand enrollment over the following decade. The donor’s identity was not disclosed.
What the gift was reported to cover
GeekWire reported that the commitment would be distributed over the next half-century to support UW’s medical laboratory science program. For the 35 students in the class at the time of the announcement, the immediate benefit was tuition coverage for two quarters of senior clinical rotations—about $9,000 per student, according to the report.
Those figures describe the announcement-time class and benefit; they should not be read as current enrollment or a current tuition schedule. The report did not identify the donor beyond describing them as a Washington resident.
UW’s stated enrollment goal
UW planned to grow the program from 70 to 100 students over the next decade, GeekWire reported. That is a stated goal, not evidence that enrollment has already reached 100. Department chair Geoff Baird cited an aging workforce and too few graduates with the needed expertise as concerns; the report did not provide a quantified workforce forecast.

What medical laboratory scientists do
UW says medical laboratory scientists test blood, other body fluids and tissue samples. Physicians use the results to help diagnose, treat and prevent disease. The university describes career settings that include clinical laboratories, research laboratories and teaching.
UW’s undergraduate program is a full-time, four-year course of study with pre-professional and professional phases, leading to a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science. The senior clinical rotations mentioned in the gift report are part of the program’s professional training.

Why the work matters to patient care
Laboratory findings help clinicians make decisions about what condition a patient may have and how care should proceed. The work often happens out of public view, but it contributes to the information that supports diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
UW Medicine CEO and School of Medicine dean Tim Dellit called the professionals “the unsung heroes” and said they “work behind the scenes that allow all of the healthcare machinery to continue to work,” according to GeekWire. Baird described the profession as “the glue that holds the whole thing together.”
