In September 2024, all 25 members of Annapurna Interactive’s team resigned after talks to make the video-game publishing division independent from Annapurna Pictures failed. The walkout concerned the game-publishing unit—not all of Annapurna Pictures, its partner studios, or the developers of its games. Annapurna Interactive still describes itself as a division of Annapurna Pictures and maintains an official games catalog.
Why did Annapurna Interactive staff resign?
Annapurna Interactive’s leaders had been negotiating with owner Megan Ellison to separate the game publisher from Annapurna Pictures and establish it as an independent entity. The negotiations failed, and contemporary reporting said Ellison walked away from the talks. President Nathan Gary, other executives, and the remaining Interactive staff then resigned. Nintendo Life’s September 2024 report reproduced the joint statement; Push Square’s report covered the failed separation talks.
The proposed change was organizational: the existing arrangement was a game-publishing division within Annapurna Pictures, while the proposed arrangement would have made it independent. Public reporting did not establish the proposed entity’s financing, ownership terms, or other deal details.
Did all 25 Annapurna employees quit?
No. The figure of 25 refers to members of the Annapurna Interactive team, according to Gary’s joint statement as reproduced by Nintendo Life: “All 25 members of the Annapurna Interactive team collectively resigned.” It does not mean all Annapurna Pictures employees resigned or that game developers at partner studios quit. Gary also said the decision was “one of the hardest decisions we have ever had to make” and was not taken lightly.

What did Annapurna say would happen to its games and projects?
Megan Ellison said the company’s “top priority is continuing to support our developer and publishing partners during this transition.” She also said Annapurna was committed to its existing slate and intended to keep expanding in interactive storytelling. These are statements of the company’s priorities and plans, not independent confirmation that every partner contract or project later proceeded on its original schedule.
Contemporary reporting said existing games and projects would remain with Annapurna, and that Hector Sanchez had told developers the company would honor existing contracts while replacing staff. Treat that as an assurance made at the time, not proof of the eventual outcome of each project.

Who was Hector Sanchez?
A correction to Push Square’s September 16, 2024 report clarified that Sanchez was President of Interactive and New Media at Annapurna. He had not replaced Gary as president of Annapurna Interactive.

Annapurna Interactive’s official About page describes it as a division of Annapurna Pictures and lists released games including Stray, Outer Wilds, What Remains of Edith Finch, and Neon White. Its games page also presents a catalog with links to platform storefronts. That supports the conclusion that the publisher remained active after the 2024 resignations; it does not establish that every project discussed during the transition kept its original timetable.
