South Carolina’s annual nonresident fishing license costs $35 for freshwater or $75 for saltwater, and each is valid for one year from the date of purchase. They are separate license categories, so choose based on where you plan to fish—not just how long your trip lasts. SCDNR’s current listed prices and other nonresident options are on its nonresident license pricing page.
Which annual license do you need?
South Carolina lists nonresident freshwater and saltwater fishing as separate privileges. The annual freshwater license is $35; the annual saltwater license is $75. Both are valid for one year from purchase, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). The pricing page does not establish that one category covers the other, so check the water you intend to fish and the applicable rules before buying.

For a short visit, compare the relevant shorter-term license with the annual option. The published menu includes a three-year choice for freshwater but no corresponding multi-year saltwater option.
How to buy through SCDNR
- Identify your category and trip length. Decide whether your fishing requires the freshwater or saltwater privilege, then compare the available duration options on SCDNR’s nonresident pricing page.
- Start at SCDNR’s purchase information page. Use SCDNR’s license purchasing page to reach the official Go Outdoors SC online licensing platform or locate a mail-in application, including the nonresident application.
- Verify before paying. In the licensing system, check that the selected privilege matches your plans and confirm the displayed charge. SCDNR warns about fraudulent websites; use the agency’s official purchasing route rather than an unofficial seller.
- Keep your license record available as instructed. Follow the directions shown by the licensing system and the requirements that apply to your activity. For rules not covered by the pricing page, consult SCDNR’s fishing regulations.
Does a child under 16 need a license?
SCDNR’s general pricing overview says children under 16 generally do not need a fishing license, but that is not an unconditional exemption. Exceptions can include commercial activity or use of specified nongame devices. Check SCDNR’s general fishing and hunting license pricing information for the circumstances that apply.
