If you own an Anko Glass Flip Pickle Jar bought from Kmart or Target in Australia, stop using it, keep it away from food, and return it to a store for a refund. The official recall says fermenting fruit or vegetables stored in liquid can build up gas, which may make the jar break or explode, or make the lid difficult to remove. The stated hazard is serious lacerations. The recall covers jars sold from 15 February 2023 to 3 March 2025, and the title’s fridge incident was reported by PerthNow on 27 January 2025.
Check whether your jar is the recalled product
The recalled item is the Anko Glass Flip Pickle Jar. The Product Safety Australia recall notice, PRA2025/20458, describes it as a glass jar with two compartments designed for storing fruit or vegetables in liquid. Kmart and Target each published their own retailer notice, and each uses a different identifier, so match the code on your retailer’s notice against your jar and receipt rather than relying on the product name alone.

Both retailer notices give the same core hazard and remedy. Only the identifier and return route differ.
What to do with the jar now
- Stop using the jar immediately. Do not store fruit, vegetables, pickles or any other food in liquid inside it, and do not reuse it for preserving.
- Compare the Anko Glass Flip Pickle Jar against the Kmart keycode or Target item code above. If it matches the sale window, treat it as recalled.
- Take it to the nearest store for the retailer named in its notice. The official notice says: “Consumers should immediately stop using the product and return it to the nearest Kmart or Target store for a refund.”
- If you cannot return it, or you have already sold or given it to someone else, contact the retailer named in the notice for instructions.
The ACCC’s general recall guidance gives the same basic direction for recalled products: stop using them and contact the supplier for repair, replacement or refund. For this recall, the retailer notices specify a refund at the store.

Why the jar is dangerous
The notice states that the product “can break when used to store certain fruit or vegetables in liquid.” Fermenting food produces gas. According to the notice, that gas can build up inside the jar and cause it to explode or make the lid difficult to remove. The stated risk is serious laceration injury if the jar bursts or the lid breaks while being opened. The notice states that “Injuries have occurred,” but it does not publish a number of injuries.
The hazard is tied to fermenting food stored in liquid. The notices do not describe the jar as unsafe for every use, and they do not say which specific foods carry the highest risk beyond the general description of fruit or vegetables in liquid.

The fridge incident in the headline
The headline refers to a report by PerthNow dated 27 January 2025. According to that report, Sally Asplin posted a photograph of her shattered jar after it exploded in a fridge with beetroot inside, and she asked: “Anyone ever had one of these jars explode in your fridge.” The incident and the quote come from that report. We have not independently verified the photograph.
The recall notice describes the product’s general defect and hazard. It does not say that beetroot caused this incident or any other. Treat the beetroot detail as part of one owner’s account, not as a confirmed cause.

What the recall does and does not tell you
- It names two retailers, two identifiers and one sale window. It does not name other Anko jars.
- It sets a refund through the retailer as the remedy. It does not state a repair or replacement option for this product.
- The sale window closed on 3 March 2025. The notices were published in 2025, and this article is dated October 2026, so the jar may still be in homes long after the window closed.
If you are unsure whether your jar falls inside the recall, contact the store before you travel, because the notices give the codes and sale period but not every detail of what a store will ask for at the counter.

Does this recall cover other Anko jars or pickle products?
The Product Safety Australia notice and the Kmart and Target retailer notices name only the Anko Glass Flip Pickle Jar, with the Kmart keycode 43270095 and the Target item code 68726621. Other Anko products are not named in these notices, so check them against the codes rather than assuming they are included.

Is it safe to keep using the jar if I only store dry food in it?
The notices do not address dry food. Their hazard is described as fermenting fruit or vegetables stored in liquid, and their instruction is to stop using the product immediately. Follow the instruction and return the jar.
