Amtrak’s 2026 Falling Fares Sale is no longer bookable: the booking window closed September 30, 2026. The promotion offered at least 25% off the Flex fare amount on eligible Coach tickets for select travel from October 14 through December 17, with blackout dates and strict ticket restrictions. Amtrak’s official sale terms are the authority on the offer.
What was the Amtrak Falling Fares Sale?
Amtrak advertised a discount of at least 25% off the Flex fare amount on eligible Coach tickets. The offer applied to select routes and departures, and sale inventory was not guaranteed to remain available for every train or date. “At least 25%” described the sale’s discount term, not a guarantee that every itinerary would be 25% cheaper than every other fare option.
The booking period ran September 24–30, 2026. Amtrak’s page lists September 30 as the end of the sale, so travelers cannot use this promotion to book now.
Which travel dates and routes were included?
Eligible travel dates were October 14 through December 17, 2026, except November 11 and November 20–30. The listed routes were:

- Northeast Regional, Downeaster, Borealis, Hiawatha, Wolverine, Heartland Flyer, Capitol Corridor, Blue Water, Pere Marquette, Carolinian, and Piedmont
Being on the list meant a route was eligible in principle; it did not guarantee a discounted seat for a particular departure. Amtrak said sale seats might not be available on all trains, dates, or departures, and fares, routes, and schedules could change. See the official terms for the sale’s route and date details.
What restrictions applied to sale tickets?
- The offer was limited to Coach and could not be combined with another discount.
- Changes were not permitted.
- Cancellations before departure were allowed, but incurred a 50% cancellation fee.
Those conditions made the low advertised fare less suitable for a trip whose date or plans might change. The 50% fee applied to cancellations before departure; the terms did not make the ticket changeable.

What should travelers do now?
Because the booking deadline has passed, anyone still planning an autumn trip needs to check current availability and prices for the desired itinerary directly with Amtrak. Compare the total fare for the actual route and departure date, and weigh any fare’s flexibility against the possibility of canceling or changing plans. The expired sale terms do not establish what fares or inventory are available now.

Amtrak Media’s October 2, 2025 announcement included a statement from Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Eliot Hamlisch about the appeal of autumn train travel. That was a 2025 comment, not a statement about the 2026 promotion; the 2026 sale terms are on Amtrak’s sale page.
