The “no more seatback screens” framing reflects an earlier stage of the plan: in August 2026, American announced it would install screens on retrofitted narrowbody aircraft, with installations on new deliveries beginning in 2028.
What the A319 cabin retrofit changes
American’s A319 refresh is part of a broader program that also covers A320 aircraft. The airline’s 2024 announcement described new seats with refreshed trim and finishes, larger overhead bins and power at every seat. Its June 2026 update says refreshed A319 and A320 cabins will have USB-C power at every seat, more storage and enhanced mood lighting.
American’s June update said customers would begin seeing refreshed aircraft that summer. That is a planned service timeline, not confirmation that a particular aircraft has completed the work.
Planned premium-cabin capacity
| Aircraft | Announced domestic first-class/premium seats |
|---|---|
| Airbus A319 | 12 |
| Airbus A320 | 16 |
These counts appear in American’s 2024 retrofit announcement and its June 2026 cabin update; they describe the announced cabin plans, not an aircraft-specific seat map. American’s 2024 aircraft-order and retrofit announcement and June 2026 cabin update.

What happened to the “no more seatback screens” plan?
The original retrofit story described an initial A319 configuration without seatback screens. A secondary post sharing the story reported that the first aircraft had been ferried for overhaul, but it does not establish the aircraft’s current configuration or American’s final fleet policy. The post sharing the original A319 retrofit headline.
American’s August 2026 announcement subsequently changed the long-term picture: the airline plans to put seatback screens at every seat on retrofitted narrowbody aircraft, as well as new narrowbody deliveries beginning in 2028. American says its target is to complete installation by early next decade. The announced platform features include 4K displays, USB-C charging and Bluetooth audio. These are program features and timing targets, not proof that they are already installed on every A319. American’s August 2026 seatback-screen announcement.
