American Airlines received its first premium-configured Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on April 30, 2025, and said two of the aircraft had arrived at Dallas-Fort Worth in late April. The 244-seat version introduced Flagship Suite Preferred and redesigned cabins; its first announced flights began June 5, 2025. Route and delivery figures below are historical announcements, not a current fleet or schedule check.
What changed in the new 787-9
The premium-configured 787-9 has 244 seats, 41 fewer than the 285-seat standard 787-9 configuration in American’s 2025 fact sheet. Its cabin mix adds a distinct Flagship Suite Preferred section and changes the number of seats in each other cabin.
| Cabin | Premium 787-9 | Standard 787-9 | Published details for the premium configuration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flagship Suite Preferred | 8 | Not listed | American says these seats offer up to 19% more bed space and 42% more living area than its other Flagship Suite seats. |
| Flagship Suite / Flagship Business | 43 | 30 | Privacy doors, personal storage, wireless charging, Bluetooth, and a chaise-lounge option. |
| Premium Economy | 32 | 21 | Privacy headrest wings, adjustable calf and footrests, wireless charging, Bluetooth, and bottle storage. |
| Main Cabin Extra | 18 | 34 | Seat counts are published; the fact sheet does not provide a feature-by-feature comparison for this cabin. |
| Main Cabin | 143 | 200 | Bluetooth connectivity and seat power. |
| Total | 244 | 285 | Seat counts from American’s 2025 fact sheet. |
The eight Flagship Suite Preferred seats are a separate cabin category, not part of the 43 Flagship Suite seats. The fact sheet describes equipment and dimensions; it does not establish an independent passenger-comfort or service-quality advantage.

How to check whether a flight has this configuration
- Search the exact travel date and route on aa.com.
- In the booking flow, look for the aircraft configuration designator 78P, which American said identifies the new 787-9 layout.
- Recheck the aircraft details for the specific flight before travel. Schedules and aircraft assignments can change, so a route previously announced with the 78P is not proof that a particular future departure will use it.
What American said about the cabin
American Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden described the design intent this way: “Every aspect of our new 787-9 is designed to feel premium in nature.” That is the airline’s characterization of the product, not an independent passenger study.
