Amtrak’s former San Joaquins route is now called Gold Runner, and Amtrak’s current route page promotes the return of a seventh daily round trip. Those are two separate changes: the name took effect November 3, 2025, while the additional round trip is a later service-frequency change. The route page confirms Amtrak is advertising the seventh trip, but check the live schedule for your specific date and journey.
What changed—and when?
- November 3, 2025: The San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority announced that Amtrak San Joaquins had been renamed Gold Runner. The authority manages and administers the service and has partnered with Amtrak since 2015. Amtrak’s announcement described six daily round trips at that time.
- Later service update: Amtrak’s current Gold Runner route page, checked October 7, 2026, promotes “It’s Back! 7th Daily Round Trip.” This is a later frequency update, not part of the November 2025 rebrand.
The distinction matters because Amtrak’s FY2025 California fact sheet also reported six daily round trips. That fact sheet is a dated snapshot, not a current timetable guarantee.
What route does Gold Runner serve?
Gold Runner is a state-supported Amtrak service operated in partnership with the San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority. The route connects the San Joaquin Valley, with Bakersfield at its southern end, to the Bay Area and Sacramento through different service patterns. Amtrak’s FY2025 fact sheet described five daily round trips on the Oakland–Stockton–Fresno–Bakersfield pattern and one on the Sacramento–Stockton–Fresno–Bakersfield pattern; those figures describe that fiscal-year snapshot, not necessarily today’s schedule.
The November 2025 announcement described 18 train stations and Thruway bus connections to 135 destinations in California and Nevada. Those bus connections extend the network, but they do not mean every train serves every destination. Amtrak’s FY2025 fact sheet said more than half of Gold Runner passengers use Amtrak Connections for at least one leg of their journey.

How to check whether the added trip works for your journey
A seventh daily round trip can provide another option, but availability and usefulness depend on the segment and travel date. Before booking, compare the itinerary details in Amtrak’s booking tools rather than relying on a route-wide headline.
- Open Amtrak’s Gold Runner route page and use its trip-planning option.
- Enter your actual origin, destination, and travel date. Check whether the itinerary is by train for the full journey or includes a Thruway bus connection.
- Compare departure and arrival times, transfer points, total journey time, and fare for the itineraries shown.
- Review date-specific service alerts before travel; a promoted daily frequency does not guarantee a particular train or connection will operate on every date.
Does “passengers rejoice” reflect confirmed reaction?
The available official announcements establish the name change and Amtrak’s promotion of the seventh daily round trip, but they do not establish that passengers broadly rejoiced. David Lipari, then Interim Executive Director of the San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority, said of the rebrand: “Gold Runner represents more than a new name, it’s a symbol of our commitment to our passengers and California’s communities.” That is the authority’s statement of intent, not evidence of passenger sentiment.

What about reports of trains 713 and 714 being cancelled?
A secondary report described trains 713 and 714 as scheduled to be out of service from January 5 through March 5, 2026, for equipment repairs, with regular service expected March 6. Those dates have passed; that report does not establish their current operating status or confirm the expected return date. Use Amtrak’s current timetable and service alerts for present-day information.
