That is the gain behind the “10%” headline—not a 10% increase in revenue. Intel still held most desktop shipments.
What does “grew by 10%” mean?
The figure describes a change in unit share: AMD’s portion of desktop x86 processors shipped. Mercury Research put AMD a little over 36% in Q4 2025, 9.5 percentage points above its share in Q4 2024, which was roughly 27%, as reported by PC Gamer.

Percentage points and percent growth are not interchangeable. A rise from roughly 27% to a little over 36% is about 9.5 percentage points; describing it as “10%” is a rounded headline shorthand. It does not mean AMD’s revenue rose 10%, nor that AMD captured 36% of PC sales by value.
Did AMD overtake Intel?
No. AMD gained ground, but Intel retained the majority of desktop x86 processor shipments in Q4 2025. AMD’s overall x86 share—which combines desktop, mobile and server processors—was 29.2%, up 4.5 percentage points year over year, according to the same Mercury Research figures reported by PC Gamer. The desktop result is a category-specific measure, not a claim that AMD leads across all processors or all PC revenue.

How the desktop result compares with other segments
Mercury Research’s reported year-over-year figures show that AMD’s desktop gain was larger than its gains in mobile and server processors:
| Category | AMD share change, Q4 2025 vs. Q4 2024 | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop x86 | Up 9.5 percentage points; a little over 36% share in Q4 2025 | Share of desktop processor units |
| Mobile x86 | Up 2.2 percentage points | Share of mobile processor units |
| Server x86 | Up 3.1 percentage points | Share of server processor units |
| Overall x86 | Up 4.5 percentage points; 29.2% share in Q4 2025 | Share across the x86 processor market |
These are share changes between the fourth quarters of 2024 and 2025, not quarter-over-quarter changes. Unit share also differs from revenue share: a processor count does not reveal how much money each vendor earned per chip. A shift toward more expensive products can lift revenue without an equivalent change in unit share.

What may have driven AMD’s gain?
PC Gamer’s account of Mercury Research’s explanation says Intel intentionally reallocated manufacturing capacity to server CPUs earlier in 2025, limiting its ability to build and sell PC processors. The report also points to strong Ryzen demand and a richer product mix for AMD. Those are reported explanations, not experimental proof that any one factor caused the full share change.
AMD’s own 2025 filing provides a separate view of its client business. The company reported $10.6 billion in client revenue, up 51% from $7.1 billion in 2024. It attributed the increase primarily to a 31% rise in processor unit shipments and a 15% rise in average selling price, reflecting strong demand for desktop and mobile Ryzen processors. These company financial figures cover the client business, not desktop processors alone, and should not be confused with Mercury Research’s market-share estimates.

- 5 nm process technology for reliable performance with maximum productivity
- Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
- 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
AMD also reported $14.6 billion in 2025 revenue for its combined Client and Gaming segment, up 51%. That broader segment figure includes gaming-related business, so it is not a measure of desktop CPU revenue. The figures appear in AMD’s 2025 annual filing and financial reports.

For a PC buyer, a bigger share indicates that AMD processors accounted for more desktop units shipped; it does not by itself show that every Ryzen model is better value, more available, or faster than an Intel alternative. Product-level comparisons still depend on the workload, platform cost, performance and current pricing. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is one high-end gaming desktop processor cited in PC Gamer’s recommendations, but one model cannot explain the overall market-share trend.

For investors, share and revenue answer different questions. The Mercury Research estimate signals AMD’s relative position in desktop x86 unit shipments. AMD’s reported client revenue, shipment growth and average selling price provide company-level context, but cover a broader product scope. Neither the share gain nor the reported revenue growth alone establishes future performance.
