The Lily Camera drew more than 60,000 customers into a high-profile drone preorder campaign that brought in about $34 million, but the camera never shipped. Lily Robotics blamed technical delays and a lack of financing, announced that preorder customers would be refunded, then entered Chapter 11. The San Francisco District Attorney also sued, alleging deceptive advertising and improper handling of preorder money. The available accounts document refund plans, not proof that every customer received a refund.
What Lily promised—and why so many people paid in advance
Lily Robotics marketed its camera drone as a waterproof, autonomous “throw-and-go” flying camera. A user was supposed to toss it into the air, let it follow or lead them using a wearable tracker, capture aerial video and return for a hand landing. The San Francisco District Attorney’s complaint summary put the advertised price at roughly $499 to $899.

The launch video helped turn that promise into an unusually large hardware preorder campaign. Courthouse News Service reported in 2017 that more than 30 million people had viewed the video by the end of 2015 and that the campaign generated about $34 million in sales for more than 60,000 units. VentureBeat separately reported more than $34 million in preorders from at least 60,000 customers. Those totals describe orders and money taken in—not drones delivered.

Why Lily delayed delivery, then ran out of runway
The first delay
In a December 2015 update reproduced by sUAS News, Lily said it was postponing shipments until summer 2016 to address flight-software optimization, hardware improvements and additional testing. The company also said it had secured $15 million in private funding and that preorder dollars were being held in “cold storage.”

The final delay and shutdown
TechCrunch reported that the expected delivery date moved first to summer 2016 and later to early 2017. In January 2017, Lily said it had not been able to raise the additional financing needed to unlock manufacturing and ship the product. The company announced its shutdown and an automatic refund plan for preorder customers on January 11, 2017.
The sequence matters to customers who paid upfront: the company had orders and a compelling demonstration, but it had not reached the point of shipping a product before the campaign collapsed. The reported financing shortfall was presented as the immediate reason it could not move into manufacturing.

What the lawsuit alleged about the demo and the money
The San Francisco District Attorney sued Lily for false advertising and unfair business practices. Among the allegations summarized by TechCrunch was that point-of-view footage in the launch video had been filmed using a DJI Inspire rather than a Lily drone. The suit also alleged that Lily failed to meet consumer-protection requirements after shipment dates slipped substantially.

Contemporaneous reporting also quoted a complaint excerpt attributing this statement to co-founder Antoine Balaresque: “I don’t know much about lenses but I think we should be extremely careful if we decide to lie publicly.” That, too, was an allegation quoted from the court record—not an independent finding of fact.

Lily’s January 2017 announcement promised automatic refunds. On February 27, 2017, the company filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. Cole Schotz’s account of the filing described a plan to liquidate operations, refund customer deposits and sell intellectual-property assets.

A refund plan is not the same thing as evidence that each customer was repaid. The available accounts establish that Lily announced refunds and later described refunds as part of its bankruptcy plan; they do not establish whether all customers ultimately received their money, how much any individual recovered, or what to do about an unpaid claim today.

What Chapter 11 changed—and what Lily Next-Gen was
A bankruptcy case report says the court approved the sale of substantially all of Lily’s assets to Mota Group on June 20, 2017. The Lily Robotics name transferred as part of that transaction, and the debtor changed its name to Drone LC, Inc.
On October 4, 2017, Mota Group announced Lily Next-Gen as a smaller 4K follow-me camera drone. The announcement also described a stock incentive program for original Lily customers who placed qualifying orders. It records a successor-product announcement and a proposed customer-recovery strategy; it does not establish that the product is currently available or that the incentive program continues. Lily Next-Gen was not the original preorder camera being delivered.
How to assess a hardware preorder before paying
Lily’s story illustrates why a polished demo and a large preorder total do not, by themselves, establish that a product is ready to manufacture or that customers can recover their money if it fails. For a future hardware campaign, check the following before treating an advertised ship date as dependable:

- Demo credibility: Look for clear disclosure about what equipment captured the footage and whether the demonstrated features are operating on the actual product.
- Verifiable prototypes: Ask whether independent observers can confirm that working prototypes—not just promotional demonstrations—exist.
- Manufacturing readiness: A successful prototype is not the same as a production line, tested supply chain or completed quality-control process.
- Financing: Consider whether the company explains how it will pay to reach production if development costs rise or outside funding does not arrive.
- Preorder and refund protections: Read the payment terms, refund policy and any applicable platform protections; a company’s stated plan is not proof that funds are held in a way that guarantees repayment.
- Schedule history: Compare each promised ship date with the latest update, and pay attention to whether delays are accompanied by concrete progress or leave manufacturing unresolved.
