The more-than-30-minute wait was not a normal feature of Amazon grocery shopping. It was reported at one Amazon Fresh store—23rd and Jackson in Seattle—during the week of its closure, when clearance discounts drew shoppers to the store. The episode captures the local cost of losing a grocery option, but it does not show that Amazon customers generally faced long waits.
Why shoppers were waiting outside
GeekWire reported on Jan. 30, 2026, that more than 30 people queued at the Central District store on Thursday, Jan. 29. Employees admitted shoppers 15 at a time, and many people waited more than 30 minutes to enter. Inside, the store was crowded, shelves were partly empty, and checkout lines reached six people deep.
The immediate draw was clearance merchandise. Discounts circulating on TikTok and Instagram brought bargain hunters to a store Amazon had announced would close. The queue was therefore a closing-week surge at one location—not evidence of a companywide wait-time pattern or a lasting measure of the store’s usual service.
What Amazon announced—and what it did not
In late January 2026, Amazon announced it would close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical grocery stores. The company said its branded stores had not developed a sufficiently distinctive customer experience and economic model for large-scale expansion. That is Amazon’s explanation, not an independent assessment of the stores’ performance.

The announcement was not an exit from grocery retail. Amazon said it would continue Amazon Fresh online in areas where available, invest in grocery delivery, and expand Whole Foods Market. The Associated Press reported that most stores were expected to close within days, while California locations would stay open longer to comply with state requirements. Amazon said some closed locations would become Whole Foods stores; the available reporting does not establish the final fate of the 23rd and Jackson property.
What the closure meant for this Seattle neighborhood
The Central District story is also about access, not just a busy clearance sale. GeekWire reported that residents without cars faced a 10-minute bus ride or a 30-minute walk to the nearest major grocery store in either direction. Those are estimates for this neighborhood, not a national comparison or a guarantee of the route every shopper would take.

For a household, the practical cost of losing a nearby store can include extra travel time and the effort of carrying groceries, especially for people who do not drive. The reporting establishes the distance concern residents described, but it does not quantify any resulting household spending or establish what grocery options remained after the closure. Stacey Beaver, a neighborhood resident who grew up nearby, summed up the concern to GeekWire: “Now you have nothing.”
Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh were not the same format
Amazon Go
Amazon Go began in Seattle before Amazon Fresh stores debuted in 2020, according to the Associated Press. Go was positioned as checkout-free convenience retail: shoppers took items and left without stopping at a register, with payment charged after they exited.

Amazon Fresh
Fresh stores had a different path. GeekWire reported that Amazon phased out Just Walk Out in Fresh stores in 2024 and brought in Dash Carts, which let shoppers scan items as they shop. Just Walk Out remained in Go stores until closure. Amazon said the checkout-free technology would continue at third-party locations and in its own facilities.
Dash Carts, Amazon One palm authentication, and Just Walk Out are store systems in this story, not consumer products the cited reporting establishes readers can buy.

What remains for online grocery shoppers
Amazon’s announcement page, updated May 12, 2026, said Amazon Fresh online remained available in some areas. Availability is location-dependent, so the closure news does not establish whether delivery serves a particular household; customers need to check the service for their address.
Amazon said perishable same-day grocery sales had grown 40 times since January 2025. That is the company’s own comparison, not a market-wide statistic or an independently audited result. The company also said fresh groceries appeared among nine of the ten most-ordered items in areas where the service was available.

Amazon described Amazon Now as a test in several cities, rather than a universal replacement for closed stores. Its May announcement also said grocery delivery served more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns; that company-reported reach does not mean every address in those places qualifies for every delivery option.
The larger takeaway
The line at 23rd and Jackson showed how a closing sale can briefly make a store more crowded just as its neighborhood is about to lose it. Amazon’s stated strategy is to shift investment toward delivery and Whole Foods while continuing to test other physical retail formats. Whether those choices replace the access this particular neighborhood lost is not established by the closure announcement or the reporting available here.
