Amazon’s plan to make 50% of its shipments net-zero carbon by 2030 was a goal announced in 2019, not a claim that half of its deliveries had already reached that standard. Amazon later said it had eliminated the separate Shipment Zero goal. The company’s stated broader commitment is to reach net-zero carbon across its business by 2040 under The Climate Pledge.
What Amazon meant by “Shipment Zero”
Amazon described Shipment Zero as an effort to reduce the carbon impact of the fulfillment operations used to deliver customer shipments. The scope ran from picking an item at a fulfillment center, through its packaging, to the transportation mode used to deliver it. In its 2019 sustainability report, Amazon set a milestone for 50% of shipments to be net-zero carbon by 2030, alongside a longer-term vision for all shipments. Amazon’s 2019 sustainability report
The stated emissions sources included:
- Electricity used at operations facilities and to charge vehicles.
- Tailpipe emissions from fossil fuels used by vehicles transporting shipments from inventory to customers.
- Emissions from manufacturing and transporting outbound packaging materials.
The cited report describes these categories but does not provide a Shipment Zero-specific calculation formula or a measured share of shipments that met the milestone. The 50% figure should therefore be read as a target, not as a reported result.
Why Amazon discontinued the separate target
Amazon later said it had decided to eliminate Shipment Zero because the goal was narrower than The Climate Pledge and applied to only part of its business. What Amazon’s newer emissions figures do—and do not—show
In its 2025 Sustainability Report, Amazon said its absolute carbon emissions increased in 2025. It also reported that carbon intensity had fallen 38% since 2019 while revenue rose 156% over the same period. Carbon intensity and absolute emissions answer different questions: intensity relates emissions to a business measure, while absolute emissions describe the total. Neither figure establishes what share of shipments met Shipment Zero’s boundaries or whether the 50%-by-2030 goal would have been achieved.

To evaluate a corporate climate target, check whether it is still active, what activities and emissions it covers, how progress is measured, and whether reported results use the same boundaries and denominator as the original target. For Shipment Zero, Amazon has said the goal was eliminated, and the cited public material does not provide a Shipment Zero-specific results series or attainment figure.
