Amazon Seller Services reported higher FY25 revenue than Flipkart Internet: ₹30,139 crore versus ₹20,493 crore. But the available figures do not establish that more Indians shop on Amazon. Amazon’s reported 2025 Great Indian Festival visits measure event traffic, not unique shoppers, and there is no matching same-period Flipkart audience figure in the available reporting.
Which company earned more revenue in India?
For FY25, The Economic Times reported operating revenue of ₹30,139 crore for Amazon Seller Services, up 19% year over year, and revenue of ₹20,493 crore for Flipkart Internet, up 14%. These are figures for the named marketplace entities, reported from Registrar of Companies documents—not total revenue for Amazon’s or Walmart’s global businesses, and not the value of goods sold through either marketplace. The Economic Times’ FY25 comparison is the source for both figures.
| FY25 measure | Amazon Seller Services | Flipkart Internet |
|---|---|---|
| Reported revenue | ₹30,139 crore operating revenue | ₹20,493 crore revenue |
| Year-over-year change | 19% growth | 14% growth |
The comparison is useful, but the labels matter: Amazon’s figure is specified as operating revenue, while the report describes Flipkart Internet’s as revenue. Neither number is gross merchandise value (GMV), which measures the value of goods transacted, nor a direct measure of shoppers’ spending. Revenue and market share are also different measures. Moneycontrol’s FY24 comparison put Amazon Seller Services at ₹25,406 crore and Flipkart Internet at ₹17,855 crore, while separately reporting that Flipkart had the larger market share. Moneycontrol’s FY24 report illustrates why revenue alone should not be treated as a market-share ranking.
Does the evidence show that more Indians shop on Amazon?
No comparable figures in the available reporting establish that. Amazon said its 2025 Great Indian Festival generated 2.76 billion customer visits, or 276 crore visits, with 70% coming from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. That is a company-reported total for one shopping event; the source does not define it as a count of distinct people. A person may generate multiple visits, so the number cannot be read as 2.76 billion unique Indian shoppers. Amazon India’s festival announcement reports the event metric.

Nor is that event total a fair head-to-head comparison with a different platform’s annual audience, orders, or GMV. A sound answer to “How many people shop on Amazon versus Flipkart?” would need a same-period, same-geography count of unique users for both services, measured on a clearly stated basis. No such matched count is established here.
What the festival visit figures do—and do not—tell you
Amazon reported 140 crore customer visits during its 34-day Great Indian Festival in 2024 and 276 crore in 2025. The figures indicate the scale of the company’s festival traffic, but they do not show that unique shoppers doubled: neither figure is established as a deduplicated audience count, and a single event is not the same as platform-wide annual use. Treat these as Amazon-reported event metrics, not an independent market ranking. Amazon’s 2024 announcement provides the earlier figure.

Amazon India Vice President of Categories Saurabh Srivastava called the 2025 result “record-breaking” and said it reaffirmed Amazon’s position as “India’s most loved and trusted online shopping destination.” That is Srivastava’s and Amazon’s promotional characterization, not an independently measured comparison with Flipkart. The company’s announcement attributes the statement.
Why reported revenue is not the same as sales on the marketplace
A marketplace entity can earn revenue from services it provides without recording the full selling price of every item offered by third-party sellers as its own revenue. For Amazon Seller Services, marketplace services generated ₹17,328 crore in FY25, 57% of its operating revenue, while advertising revenue rose 25% to ₹8,342 crore, according to The Economic Times’ reporting. These are revenue streams of the entity, not estimates of the total value of products sold through Amazon. The FY25 filing-based report gives the breakdown.

For readers comparing platform scale, keep the measures separate:
- Revenue is income reported by a specified company or entity under its accounting definitions.
- GMV is the value of transactions on a marketplace; it is not the same as the marketplace entity’s revenue.
- Market share describes a company’s portion of a defined market and depends on the market and metric used.
- Visits, orders, and unique shoppers describe different kinds of activity; none can be substituted for another without supporting definitions and comparable data.
How large is India’s e-retail market?
A 2025 report by Bain & Company and Flipkart estimates that India’s e-retail market reached about $60 billion in GMV in 2024. The report describes India as the world’s second-largest online shopper base and says three in five new e-retail shoppers since 2020 came from Tier 3 or smaller cities. These are estimates and characterizations from a report co-published with Flipkart, not government counts. Bain and Flipkart’s 2025 report provides the market context.

The report says e-retail growth in 2024 was 10%–12%, below historical rates above 20%, and projects market GMV of $170–$190 billion by 2030. That range is a projection, not an observed outcome. It also expects high-frequency categories—including grocery, lifestyle, and general merchandise—to account for two out of every three dollars spent on e-retail by 2030. Those market-wide figures help explain the competition for online shoppers, but they do not determine which platform has more unique users.

On the evidence available, Amazon Seller Services leads Flipkart Internet in reported FY25 entity revenue, while the claim that more Indians shop on Amazon remains unproven by a comparable unique-shopper measure.
