Amazon Prime Now launched in select Manhattan neighborhoods on December 18, 2014. At launch, Prime members could choose advertised one-hour delivery for $7.99 or free two-hour delivery. The service’s standalone app and website have since been retired; Amazon said in 2021 that the experience was moving into its main app and website.
What Prime Now’s Manhattan launch offered
Amazon introduced Prime Now as a fast local-delivery service for Prime members, initially in select areas of Manhattan—not all of New York City. TechCrunch’s December 18, 2014 coverage reported the launch terms and described tens of thousands of everyday essentials, including paper towels, batteries, toys, and books. The delivery windows were advertised options, not proof that orders routinely arrived within those times.

TechCrunch’s launch report gives the historical details. The sources do not establish a complete 2014 coverage map, so the launch should not be read as service to every Manhattan address, much less every NYC borough.
Local-store delivery followed in 2015
On May 21, 2015, Amazon announced Prime Now delivery from selected Manhattan retailers: D’Agostino, Gourmet Garage, and Billy’s Bakery. Amazon said two-hour delivery was free and one-hour delivery cost $7.99 in select ZIP codes. Those terms described the 2015 local-store offering, not current Amazon delivery prices.

In that announcement, Amazon operations executive Dave Clark said, “Our Prime Now hub in Manhattan is home to tens of thousands of products that are being delivered to customers in an hour or less.” That was Amazon’s description of its service at the time, rather than an independent measurement of typical delivery performance. Does the Prime Now app still exist?
No. In 2021, Amazon announced that Prime Now’s shopping experience was being integrated into Amazon’s main app and website, and that its standalone app and website would be retired worldwide by the end of that year. Amazon described the original service as a foundation for its ultrafast grocery and same-day delivery businesses. The retirement concerned the separate Prime Now storefront; it did not mean that every fast-delivery option disappeared.

Amazon’s 2021 announcement said the U.S. had begun offering two-hour delivery from Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market on Amazon in 2019. It described the transition this way: “Now that the Prime Now experience has a new home on Amazon, we will retire the Prime Now app and website worldwide by the end of this year.” That was a statement about the plan announced in 2021; the standalone service is not a current option. Amazon’s 2026 materials describe separate current options, including one-hour and three-hour delivery for selected orders and Amazon Now, which targets delivery in about 30 minutes in selected areas. These are current services, not a continuation of the original Prime Now NYC product under the same name. Amazon says eligibility depends on the delivery area; options, selection, and fees can vary.

To check what is actually offered for an address, use Amazon’s current availability information or enter the delivery address in the Amazon app or on Amazon’s website. Do not infer present coverage from the 2014 Manhattan launch or assume an old $7.99 fee still applies.
