Amazon is scaling back a significant amount of its first-party AAA game development, particularly work on MMOs, while continuing to promote social and party games on Luna. That does not mean every Amazon-supported MMO has already shut down: New World has a scheduled end date, while western Throne and Liberty operations are planned to move to a new operator.
What Amazon’s MMO pullback actually means
In an October 28, 2025 report, The Verge quoted Amazon VP Steve Boom saying the company had decided to halt “a significant amount” of first-party AAA development, “specifically around MMOs.” The announcement accompanied layoffs affecting Amazon Game Studios’ Irvine and San Diego studios and its central publishing team.
The wording matters: Amazon described a reduction in part of its development portfolio, not an immediate end to every MMO it publishes or supports. A game Amazon publishes may be developed by another studio, and its service can continue even as Amazon changes its own development plans. New World and Throne and Liberty now illustrate two different outcomes.
What happens to New World?
Amazon said Season 10: Nighthaven would be New World: Aeternum’s final content release. That was the end of planned content updates, not the same thing as an immediate server shutdown.

The current Steam listing says New World: Aeternum is scheduled to go offline on all platforms on January 31, 2027. It also states that the game was to be delisted on January 15, 2026; that date has passed. Amazon’s earlier announcement said it intended to keep the servers operating through 2026 and promised at least six months’ notice before changes affecting players’ ability to play. The later Steam date is the more current published shutdown plan.
Throne and Liberty is planned to change operators
Amazon said in 2025 that it would continue supporting Throne and Liberty. Its later transition announcement says western live operations and publishing responsibilities are scheduled to move to FirstSpark Games / NC in Q4 2026.

The transition plan says player accounts, characters, progression, inventory, platforms, and game data will be preserved by default, subject to an opt-out process. Players will need to accept NC’s terms after the transition. This is a planned handoff, not evidence that the game is closing; players should use the official notice for the latest migration steps and dates.
What Amazon is building on Luna instead
Amazon’s games site currently presents Luna’s GameNight party and social games as part of a Prime game library at no additional cost to Prime members. Amazon’s October 6, 2026 Luna update lists that month’s content and describes games for solo play or for playing with family and friends. The monthly catalog can change, so check Luna for current availability.

GameNight is designed for a living-room TV, with each player using a smartphone as a controller after scanning a QR code, according to Amazon’s GameNight overview. You do not need to buy a Luna Controller just to join a GameNight session. Amazon’s October update, for example, described Space Metal Mania as couch co-op and compatible with Luna Remote Play.
That puts the shift in practical terms: Amazon is emphasizing accessible, social play through Luna alongside casual and AI-focused games, rather than investing as heavily in its own long-running AAA MMO development. The October 2025 announcement also mentioned continued work with Crystal Dynamics on a Tomb Raider game, a driving game with Maverick Games, and March of Giants after a closed alpha. Those were project statuses reported at the time, not confirmation of current release plans.

What the shift means for players
- If you play New World: distinguish the final content update from the scheduled shutdown. The current Steam listing gives January 31, 2027 as the offline date.
- If you play Throne and Liberty in the West: follow the official transition notice for the Q4 2026 handoff, opt-out process, and terms acceptance.
- If you want to try GameNight: check Luna’s current catalog and regional availability. A smartphone can serve as each player’s controller; a dedicated Luna Controller is not required for that use.
Amazon’s October 2025 comments concern first-party development and staffing, while subsequent service notices determine what happens to individual games. The result is a portfolio shift, not a single blanket shutdown: New World has a scheduled end date, Throne and Liberty has a planned operator transition, and Luna’s party-game offering remains active as of October 2026.
