Amazon announced on January 27, 2026, that it would close its physical Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores. The decision concerns the stores—not Amazon Fresh online, which Amazon said would remain available in areas it serves. The company also said some former store locations would become Whole Foods Market stores.
What Amazon announced
Amazon said it would close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical grocery stores and convert various locations into Whole Foods Market stores. The announcement did not include a complete list of locations or a store-by-store conversion schedule. Amazon’s announcement, updated May 12, 2026, described the change as a shift in how it would serve grocery customers.
Amazon said it had not yet created a sufficiently distinctive customer experience and the right economic model to expand the Amazon-branded store formats at scale. That is the company’s explanation; the announcement did not provide audited losses or independent store-level profitability figures.
When stores were expected to close
At the time of the announcement on January 27, the Associated Press reported that most locations were expected to close within days. California locations were expected to remain open longer to comply with state requirements. The AP also reported that some closed sites would become Whole Foods stores. That announcement-time report is not a current store locator, and it does not establish the final status of every location as of October 7, 2026.

It also listed Whole Foods Market and local retail partners among grocery options on Amazon. Amazon said it served more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns with online groceries, according to its May 2026 update. It also said perishable groceries—including produce, dairy, meat, baked goods, and frozen food—were available through Same-Day Delivery in eligible areas. Amazon reported that sales of perishables through that service had grown 40 times since January 2025; this is the company’s own reported figure, not an independently measured result.
For a practical alternative, compare delivery availability and timing with a nearby Whole Foods or other local grocery options. The cited announcement does not establish that one option is cheaper than another.

Why Amazon is focusing on delivery and Whole Foods
Amazon’s announcement framed the closures as a change in investment priorities: it plans to focus on online grocery delivery and Whole Foods Market rather than expanding Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores. In the May 2026 update, Amazon reported a Whole Foods footprint of more than 550 locations and plans for more than 100 additional stores over the next few years. These are company-reported figures and plans, not independently audited forecasts.

Amazon described Amazon Go locations as innovation hubs for its Just Walk Out technology, but said the technology was also in use outside its own stores. In the May 2026 announcement, Amazon reported deployments in more than 360 third-party locations across five countries and in more than 40 North American fulfillment-center breakrooms. The Associated Press also reported that third-party use would continue. The store closures therefore should not be read as an announcement that the technology is ending.
