Amazon announced new fees for some Amazon Fresh grocery deliveries in January 2023; the charges took effect February 28, 2023. That announcement is not the same as Amazon’s current fee schedule: Amazon now lists different rates for Amazon Fresh, Same-Day Delivery, Whole Foods Market, Amazon Now, and partner grocers. Your Prime status, order subtotal, service, and delivery address can all affect the charge.
What changed in February 2023?
GeekWire reported on January 27, 2023, that Amazon would begin charging Prime members a delivery fee on Amazon Fresh orders under $150, effective February 28, 2023. The reported tiers were:

GeekWire noted that some Prime members had previously received free delivery on orders over $35 in select areas; that earlier threshold was not established as nationwide. GeekWire’s January 27, 2023 report is the source for the announcement and tiers.
Why did Amazon say it was adding fees?
An Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire the fee was intended “to help keep prices low in our online and physical grocery stores” while better covering grocery delivery costs and maintaining a consistent, fast, high-quality delivery experience. That is Amazon’s stated rationale, not independent evidence about its costs or the effect of the fees on grocery prices.

Amazon’s guide also lists an optional grocery delivery subscription: $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, and $4.99 per month for qualifying Prime Access members. It covers unlimited deliveries on eligible grocery orders over $25 in most areas, with free one-hour delivery windows where available. How much do you have to order for free Amazon grocery delivery?
There is no single threshold for every Amazon grocery service. Amazon currently lists free Prime Same-Day delivery with perishables on orders over $25 in most areas, while Amazon Fresh delivery is listed as free for Prime members over $100. Whole Foods Market, Amazon Now, and partner-grocer deliveries have separate terms or fees. The checkout page for the selected service and delivery address is the best place to confirm whether an order qualifies.
How to check the fee before placing an order
- Choose the grocery service you intend to use, such as Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods Market; the fee depends on the service.
- Enter or confirm your delivery address and select an available delivery window. Availability and local terms can differ.
- Check the order subtotal against that service’s threshold and confirm whether you are signed in as a Prime member.
- Review the final checkout total, including the stated delivery fee and any other charges. Listed delivery rates do not establish item prices, taxes, or the full order cost.
Do Amazon Fresh store changes affect online delivery?
Amazon said in January 2026 that it had decided to close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores and convert various locations to Whole Foods Market stores, while continuing online grocery delivery and pickup in eligible areas.
