Amazon Games and Smilegate RPG released Lost Ark in the West on February 11, 2022, as a free-to-play PC game on Steam. Smilegate also said 55% of the 4.7 million-plus new registrations came from the Americas and 45% from Europe. Amazon separately described nearly 60 million cumulative Twitch hours watched by February 14. Was Lost Ark the most-played MMORPG?
Amazon said Lost Ark became Steam’s highest-played MMORPG within its first week. That phrasing matters: it describes a platform-specific comparison, not a definitive ranking of every MMORPG audience worldwide. GeekWire’s contemporaneous February 17 coverage noted that other major MMORPGs use separate storefronts or distribute players across multiple platforms, making Steam-only comparisons incomplete. How does Lost Ark compare with New World?
A fair comparison requires the same metric and platform: peak concurrent Steam players versus peak concurrent Steam players. The launch figures here establish Lost Ark’s peak, but do not provide a New World peak to compare against. They also do not establish relative sales, unique players, retention, or total audiences across non-Steam services, so those conclusions cannot be drawn from this launch data alone.

What the record does—and does not—show
Lost Ark’s debut was a major Steam launch: the independently tracked simultaneous-player peak exceeded 1.3 million, and the publisher reported millions of new Western registrations during the opening days. Neither number establishes how many people paid for the game, how many continued playing, or whether it remained popular afterward.
