Amazon announced on November 13, 2023, that it would close Crown Channel and Game Growth and eliminate “just over 180 roles” in its gaming business. The company said it would focus Prime Gaming more closely on its monthly free-games benefit. The figure came from an internal memo, not an independently verified final headcount.
What Amazon announced
Amazon Games vice president Christoph Hartmann told employees on November 13, 2023, that the company would close Crown Channel and Game Growth after reviewing its priorities following an earlier restructuring in April. The associated staff reduction was described in the memo as “just over 180 roles.” GeekWire reported the announcement that day; TechCrunch followed on November 14.
“Just over 180 roles” is Amazon’s reported wording. The available reports do not establish an audited final count of individual employees or a breakdown by team or location.

Why Amazon said it was making the change
Hartmann said Amazon would concentrate resources on areas it believed had greater potential to advance the business. In the memo reproduced by GeekWire, he wrote: “After further evaluation of our businesses, it became clear that we need focus our resources and efforts to deliver great games to players now and in the future.”
He also said Amazon had heard that customers most wanted free games every month through Prime Gaming, and that the company was refining the benefit to focus there. That is Amazon’s stated rationale; the announcement does not independently demonstrate customer demand or establish that Crown Channel’s performance caused the closures.
