Amazon announced on January 28, 2026, that about 16,000 roles across the company would be affected. The company said the changes were intended to reduce organizational layers, increase ownership and remove bureaucracy. It did not publish a full list of affected business units, locations or job types.
What Amazon announced
In an employee message dated January 28, Amazon said approximately 16,000 roles across the company would be affected. The announcement described the organizational aims as “reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy.” Amazon’s message did not provide a breakdown by business unit, country, office or job family.
What affected U.S.-based staff were told
Amazon said U.S.-based employees would have 90 days to look for another role internally. For those who did not find or pursue an internal role, the company said transition support could include severance pay, outplacement services and health-insurance benefits, as applicable. The announcement did not specify individual eligibility, severance amounts, benefit duration or the outcome of any employee’s internal search.
How this round compares with the earlier cuts
| Announcement | Reported number | What the figure represents | What was publicly specified |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 2025 | About 14,000 jobs | Approximate cuts announced in October, according to the Associated Press. | The January reports cited here do not establish a complete breakdown for that earlier round. |
| January 28, 2026 | About 16,000 roles | The approximate number Amazon said would be affected in its January employee message. | Amazon stated the organizational aims and U.S. internal-role search period, but did not list affected units or locations. |
| Broader restructuring goal | About 30,000 corporate roles | A broader reduction goal reported by Reuters via Investing.com, not the January round’s announced count. | Not stated in Amazon’s January employee message. |
The 30,000 figure should not be read as a separate January layoff count: Reuters framed it as a broader goal that included the January round.

Which teams may be affected—and what is confirmed
Amazon did not announce a unit-by-unit tally. Reuters, citing people familiar with the matter, reported expected effects in AWS, retail, Prime Video and human resources. Those are attributed expectations, not a complete breakdown confirmed in Amazon’s message. The AP account also noted that the announcement did not identify affected locations or units.
Why Amazon said it was making the cuts
Amazon’s stated rationale was organizational: fewer layers, more ownership and less bureaucracy. Reuters situated the January reductions within a broader restructuring and discussed AI adoption as part of the wider context. Amazon’s January message did not identify AI as the sole or explicit cause of these cuts, so it would be inaccurate to present it that way.

What the announcement does not establish for an individual worker
- Whether a particular employee or team is affected, or where the reductions will fall.
- Whether an individual qualifies for severance, outplacement or health-insurance benefits, and the amount or duration of any benefit.
- Whether a specific internal role will be available or whether an employee will secure one during the 90-day period.
- The final number of separations or any later changes to employment terms.
For personal planning, employees should rely on direct notices and official company communications for individual terms rather than infer them from the company-wide announcement or reported expectations.
