Amazon Labor Union (ALU) members voted to affiliate with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in June 2024, creating ALU-IBT Local 1 and connecting the JFK8 union to Teamsters resources. The affiliation was an organizing and union-governance arrangement—not a labor contract with Amazon. As of April 2, 2026, the Teamsters said a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruling had ordered Amazon to recognize and bargain with the JFK8 union.
What did Amazon union workers and the Teamsters agree to?
ALU members voted 98.3% in favor of affiliating with the Teamsters, according to the Teamsters’ June 18, 2024 announcement and the Associated Press (AP). That is the reported vote result; the available accounts do not establish that the tally was independently audited. The agreement established ALU-IBT Local 1, described as an autonomous local within the Teamsters.
The goal was to add the Teamsters’ financial and organizational support to ALU’s effort to organize Amazon workers and win a contract. AP reported that at least three local representatives would take part in executive planning and strategy discussions with the Teamsters division focused on Amazon organizing. Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien said, “Together, with hard work, courage, and conviction, the Teamsters and ALU will fight fearlessly to ensure Amazon workers secure the good jobs and safe working conditions they deserve in a union contract.”
The Teamsters described their organization in 2024 as having 1.3 million members. That is the union’s stated membership figure, not an independently assessed count. AP’s June 18, 2024 report and the Teamsters’ announcement describe the affiliation vote and its stated purpose.

Did the deal give workers a contract with Amazon?
No. The 2024 vote joined ALU with the Teamsters; it did not create a collective bargaining agreement between Amazon and its workers. At the time of the vote, workers were still trying to bring Amazon to the bargaining table and secure a contract. The distinction matters: an affiliation changes how a union is organized and supported, while a labor contract sets enforceable terms between an employer and a union.
Which Amazon workers does the affiliation cover?
The Teamsters said ALU-IBT Local 1 would represent approximately 5,500 Amazon warehouse workers at JFK8, the Staten Island facility, and have jurisdiction for Amazon warehouse workers across New York City’s five boroughs. The borough-wide jurisdiction is not the same as saying every Amazon worker there was already represented by a negotiated contract.

The local’s current website identifies the organization as ALU-IBT Local 1, confirms the 2024 affiliation, and describes its aims as better pay, benefits, and working conditions. It also provides organizing, contract-survey, steward, and workplace-safety resources. April 2, 2026: Teamsters report an NLRB bargaining order
In an April 2, 2026 release, the Teamsters said an NLRB ruling ordered Amazon to recognize and bargain with the JFK8 union, required Amazon to post a workplace notice, and left the company without further NLRB appeal options on the unionization issue. The union said more than 5,000 JFK8 workers formed the union in 2022 and officially affiliated with the Teamsters in June 2024. These details are the Teamsters’ account; the ruling itself is not available here to independently assess. The reported order is a later development, not a term of the 2024 affiliation. March 31, 2026: Teamsters report a settlement over strike-related time
The Teamsters said a separate settlement mediated through the NLRB would require Amazon to restore unpaid time deducted from affected workers who struck and stop deducting that time for future strikes. The union said the settlement covered Amazon’s 1,300 facilities. Those terms and the nationwide scope are the Teamsters’ description, not independently established contract language in the available materials. The NLRB docket for case 20-CB-357173 records a bilateral settlement agreement entry dated January 13, 2026 and a closed status, but the docket page does not disclose the agreement’s terms. This settlement concerns strike-related time; it is distinct from both the 2024 affiliation and the reported JFK8 bargaining order.
