1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShort answer: Alibaba launched the Qwen3 family on April 29, 2025, and reported that selected Qwen3 models outperformed OpenAI o1 and DeepSeek-R1 on particular benchmarks. That is a significant open-model release—but it is not proof that Qwen3 is universally better than every OpenAI or DeepSeek system.
For businesses and investors, the more important question is practical: Qwen3 offers downloadable model weights, multiple sizes, local deployment, and commercial flexibility under Apache 2.0. Those advantages can reduce dependence on a hosted AI provider, but they replace API bills with hardware, engineering, security, and maintenance costs.

What Alibaba actually released
Qwen3 was not one model. Alibaba released a family of eight models:
| Model group | Models | Parameter structure | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dense | Qwen3-0.6B, 1.7B, 4B, 8B, 14B and 32B | All parameters are used for each token | Local experimentation, extraction, classification, chat and smaller deployments |
| Mixture of experts | Qwen3-30B-A3B | 30 billion total; about 3 billion active per token | Higher capability with lower per-token computation than a similarly sized dense model |
| Mixture of experts | Qwen3-235B-A22B | 235 billion total; about 22 billion active per token | Server-class reasoning and agent workloads |
Alibaba made the models available through Hugging Face, GitHub, ModelScope and Qwen Chat. The original launch date was April 29, 2025.

The “A” figures in the MoE names refer to approximately active parameters, not the model’s total storage requirement. A 235-billion-parameter model can use fewer parameters per token than its headline number suggests, but it still requires substantial memory and infrastructure to store and serve.
Did Qwen3 surpass OpenAI o1 and DeepSeek-R1?
On selected benchmarks, Alibaba says yes. As a universal product claim, no.
The headline usually refers to flagship Qwen3 variants—especially Qwen3-235B-A22B, and in some comparisons Qwen3-32B or Qwen3-30B-A3B. Alibaba’s launch materials and technical report report competitive or superior results in selected mathematics, coding, reasoning, agent and preference evaluations.
The precise model and test matter. “Qwen3 beats o1” is incomplete unless it identifies the Qwen3 checkpoint, the particular o1 version, the benchmark, the prompt format, and the inference settings. The same applies to “DeepSeek-R1,” which can mean the original full model or one of several distilled models.
The defensible version of the claim is:
Alibaba reports that selected Qwen3 variants outperform OpenAI o1 and DeepSeek-R1 on several benchmark categories. That does not establish a universal overall victory.
Why benchmark wins need context
Results can change depending on:
- the exact model revision and release date;
- thinking or non-thinking mode;
- the number of samples and whether the metric is pass@1 or pass@k;
- prompt wording and chat templates;
- sampling temperature and decoding settings;
- tool access and test-time compute;
- whether answers were judged by people, a separate model or an automated checker; and
- possible overlap between evaluation data and training or post-training data.
Alibaba’s results are useful evidence, but they are primarily developer-reported results. They should not be treated as an independent guarantee that Qwen3 will outperform a hosted model on a company’s own workload.
Rank #2
For a serious purchasing decision, reproduce the comparison using the intended prompts, model revisions, context length, inference mode, decoding parameters and evaluation script. A model that wins a mathematics benchmark may still be the worse choice for customer support, multilingual extraction, latency-sensitive applications or regulated data.

Qwen3 supports a unified thinking mode for difficult reasoning, mathematics, coding and multistep tasks, and a non-thinking mode for faster responses. Deployments can also use a configurable thinking budget to trade reasoning depth for latency and token consumption.
Thinking mode can improve difficult-task performance, but it generally takes longer and uses more output tokens. Non-thinking mode may be preferable for high-volume classification, extraction, summarization and routine chat. The best setting depends on the prompt, serving framework and decoding configuration.
“Thinking mode” should not be interpreted as a complete or reliably auditable transcript of a model’s internal chain of thought. It is more accurately described as a reasoning-oriented inference mode.
How Qwen3 compares with DeepSeek-R1
| Factor | Qwen3 | DeepSeek-R1 |
|---|---|---|
| Model strategy | A family containing dense and MoE models | A reasoning-focused full model plus distilled variants |
| Reasoning control | Explicit thinking and non-thinking modes with budget controls | Primarily reasoning-focused model behavior |
| Size range | 0.6B through 32B dense models, plus MoE models | Full R1 and multiple distilled checkpoints |
| Deployment | Local downloads, self-hosting, fine-tuning and hosted access | Publicly available checkpoints and hosted alternatives |
| Best comparison method | Match the exact checkpoint, prompt, sampling settings, tools and evaluation budget | |
Qwen3 does not automatically replace DeepSeek-R1. A team may prefer one based on language coverage, reasoning behavior, hardware availability, ecosystem support, latency or internal deployment policy. DeepSeek-R1 information and checkpoints are available through its official Hugging Face page.

- Qwen3: downloadable open weights that an organization can run, customize and fine-tune, subject to the applicable license and infrastructure.
- OpenAI o1: a hosted proprietary model accessed through OpenAI products or APIs, with the provider managing the underlying hardware and model-serving layer.
A benchmark result does not make the two interchangeable. A business choosing Qwen3 must consider GPU capacity, storage, monitoring, software updates, security controls and support. A business choosing a hosted model accepts vendor dependence, usage-based pricing and the provider’s data-handling and availability arrangements.
The meaningful comparison may therefore be privacy versus convenience, infrastructure ownership versus managed access, or total cost of ownership versus per-request pricing—not simply which model has the higher score on one test.
Is Qwen3 really open source?
The most precise description is open-weight models released under Apache 2.0, with public code and tooling. Alibaba’s repository and technical report identify the Qwen3 models as available under the Apache 2.0 license.
Apache 2.0 is a permissive license that generally allows commercial use, modification, redistribution and derivative works, subject to its conditions. However, users should inspect the license and terms attached to the exact checkpoint they download.
Apache 2.0 does not mean that:
- the complete training data is public;
- the entire training pipeline and infrastructure are reproducible;
- the model is exempt from local law, privacy obligations or sector regulation;
- outputs are accurate, safe or unbiased;
- a hosted API is free; or
- every Qwen-branded model has identical licensing terms.
For commercial use, legal review should cover the specific checkpoint, data handling, output risks, applicable regulations and any third-party components in the deployment stack.
What Qwen3 offers developers
The official Qwen3 repository documents use with Transformers, vLLM, SGLang, TGI, llama.cpp, Ollama and LM Studio, as well as fine-tuning and development tools including Axolotl, UnSloth, Swift and LLaMA-Factory. Qwen-Agent provides a route toward tool use and agent applications.

Illustrative Transformers path
The following is an example of the general workflow for a small Qwen3 checkpoint, not a guarantee that every model revision will use identical requirements:
pip install -U transformers accelerate torch
from transformers import AutoModelForCausalLM, AutoTokenizer
model_id = "Qwen/Qwen3-8B"
tokenizer = AutoTokenizer.from_pretrained(model_id)
model = AutoModelForCausalLM.from_pretrained(
model_id,
torch_dtype="auto",
device_map="auto"
)
messages = [{"role": "user", "content":
"Explain mixture-of-experts models in three paragraphs."}]
text = tokenizer.apply_chat_template(
messages, tokenize=False, add_generation_prompt=True
)
inputs = tokenizer(text, return_tensors="pt").to(model.device)
outputs = model.generate(**inputs, max_new_tokens=512)
print(tokenizer.decode(outputs[0], skip_special_tokens=True))
Check the current model card and repository before deployment. The exact model identifier, Transformers version, chat template, reasoning controls and parser support can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Hardware, latency and total cost
The smallest dense models are more plausible for local experimentation and limited-hardware deployments. Qwen3-235B-A22B is a serious server-class model even though only about 22 billion parameters are active for each token.
Actual requirements depend on:
- precision and quantization format;
- context length and KV-cache size;
- batch size and concurrent users;
- GPU memory and interconnects;
- serving framework and software versions; and
- the required latency and throughput.
Quantization can reduce memory use, but may affect quality, speed and compatibility. Alibaba’s speed documentation reports tests using specific NVIDIA H20 hardware and software versions. Those figures should not be treated as universal results for consumer GPUs or every cloud instance.
“Free download” also does not mean free operation. A self-hosted deployment may incur GPU purchase or rental costs, electricity, storage, networking, engineering time, monitoring, security work and model-update costs. A hosted API has a different cost structure, usually based on tokens or requests. Compare total cost of ownership at the expected volume rather than assuming either option is automatically cheaper.

Common deployment problems
- Out-of-memory errors: use a smaller checkpoint, quantization, shorter context, lower batch size or additional GPUs.
- Slow output: reduce the thinking budget, use non-thinking mode, shorten the prompt or choose a smaller model.
- Malformed reasoning output: verify the chat template and the reasoning parser supported by the serving framework.
- Incorrect tool calls: use the framework’s documented tool format and validate structured output before taking action.
- License uncertainty: inspect the exact Hugging Face or ModelScope repository for the downloaded checkpoint.
- Different benchmark results: reproduce the original model revision, prompt, decoding settings, context and evaluation script.
Agent systems also need permissions, retries, logging, validation and human approval for consequential actions. A strong tool-use benchmark is not proof that a model can safely operate a production workflow without controls.
Who should use Qwen3?
Qwen3 is a strong fit when:
- data must remain in a private or controlled environment;
- the team needs fine-tuning or customization;
- the organization has GPU and machine-learning engineering capacity;
- a range of model sizes is useful;
- reasoning depth and latency need to be controlled; or
- multilingual coverage matters and the important languages can be tested directly.
The technical report says Qwen3 expands support from 29 to 119 languages and dialects, but an aggregate language count is not a substitute for testing the specific language, domain and quality threshold a business requires.
A hosted model may be better when:
- the priority is the fastest route from prototype to production;
- the organization does not want to manage GPUs, scaling or quantization;
- vendor-managed tools, safety layers, observability or uptime are important; or
- the workload cannot justify operating large-model infrastructure.
For smaller tasks such as extraction, classification and routine summarization, a smaller Qwen3 model may offer a better latency and infrastructure trade-off than the flagship MoE model.

This article concerns the original April 29, 2025 Qwen3 launch. The Qwen3 repository later recorded Qwen3-2507 releases, and separate Qwen3.5 and Qwen3.6 repositories exist. Readers should not treat the original Qwen3 checkpoints as Alibaba’s newest systems in 2026.
That version distinction matters when comparing benchmarks, context-length claims, prices, supported tools or hardware requirements. Always identify the exact model revision before making a technical or commercial decision. See the Qwen3 repository and Qwen3.6 repository for later-family information.
Bottom line
Alibaba’s Qwen3 launch was real and important: it introduced a broad family of open-weight models, offered controllable reasoning modes, and reported benchmark results that put selected variants in competition with OpenAI o1 and DeepSeek-R1.
But “Qwen3 beats OpenAI and DeepSeek” is too broad. The accurate conclusion is that Alibaba reported benchmark-specific wins for particular Qwen3 checkpoints under particular evaluation conditions. For organizations, Qwen3’s biggest advantage may be deployment control and model choice—not a universal leaderboard victory. The right decision depends on the workload, hardware, privacy requirements, operating budget and willingness to manage the system yourself.
