Fake Ledger “data breach” emails tried to steal crypto wallet recovery phrases

The Ledger breach emails reported in December 2024 were phishing, not proof of a new hardware-wallet breach. Here is what to do if you clicked, entered your recovery phrase, or approved a transaction.

The Ledger breach emails reported on December 17, 2024, were phishing messages—not evidence that Ledger hardware wallets had been newly breached. The campaign falsely claimed that users’ recovery phrases might have been exposed and directed recipients to a fake verification page. That page collected 12-, 18-, or 24-word recovery phrases, which can give an attacker complete control of the associated wallet.

If you entered your recovery phrase, treat the wallet as compromised and move its assets to a newly generated wallet immediately. If you only received or clicked the message without entering sensitive information, report and delete it. Never enter a recovery phrase into a website, computer, phone, app, email form, or support chat.

What the fake Ledger breach email claimed

The campaign was reported on December 17, 2024. Its subject line was reportedly “Security Alert: Data Breach May Expose Your Recovery Phrase.” The message impersonated Ledger, appeared to use [email protected], and claimed that a recent breach might have exposed users’ recovery phrases.

Recipients were urged to verify their phrase through a supposedly secure Ledger tool. However, a sender address is not proof that a message came from Ledger. The campaign was reportedly distributed through SendGrid and used a redirect chain involving an AWS-hosted address and the lookalike domain ledger-recovery[.]info.

Do not visit or test those addresses. Their inclusion here is defanged for safety, and the reported campaign should not be assumed to be active today.

Ledger’s standing guidance is unambiguous: it will never ask for a recovery phrase. A legitimate security notification will not require you to type your words into an online form.

BleepingComputer’s report documents the campaign’s email and phishing-page behavior. Ledger’s official phishing guidance explains how to recognize and report similar scams.

How the phishing page stole recovery phrases

The fake website imitated a Ledger security-check page and accepted 12-, 18-, or 24-word phrases. Reported behavior included:

  1. Asking for the words one at a time.
  2. Checking entries against the standard list of 2,048 BIP-39 words.
  3. Visually rejecting words that did not match the list.
  4. Sending entered words to the site’s backend.
  5. Claiming that phrases were invalid even when correct, potentially prompting victims to submit them repeatedly.

This is credential theft, not wallet verification. A recovery phrase is the master backup for a wallet. Someone who obtains it may restore the wallet on another compatible device or software wallet and transfer its assets. Blockchain transactions are generally irreversible.

A recovery phrase is therefore not “just another password.” It normally cannot be reset after exposure. Do not paste an exposed phrase into another checker, blockchain explorer, security service, or wallet application to see whether it works. That only creates another opportunity for theft.

Was there a real Ledger data breach?

The reported emails did not establish a new breach of Ledger hardware or wallet software. They used a false breach claim as social engineering to persuade recipients to surrender their recovery phrases.

Ledger did suffer a separate e-commerce-related customer-data exposure in 2020 involving information such as names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. That history can make targeted phishing more convincing, but leaked contact information is not the same thing as a leaked wallet recovery phrase. Knowing an email or shipping address does not by itself provide access to a wallet.

Read Ledger’s account of the earlier incident in its message from Ledger’s CEO. It should not be conflated with the 2024 phishing campaign.

What you should do based on what happened

If you received the email but entered nothing

  1. Do not click the link again or reply.
  2. Mark the message as phishing or spam, then delete it.
  3. Visit Ledger by typing ledger.com yourself or using a known bookmark.
  4. Download or use Ledger Wallet only through Ledger’s official website.
  5. Do not trust phone numbers, support accounts, URLs, or app-download links supplied by the email.

If you merely clicked the link but did not enter a phrase, password, PIN, private key, or transaction approval, the main risk is further interaction with the scam. Close the page and follow the steps above. If a file or application was downloaded, do not open it; remove it and run a security check using trusted security software.

If you entered an email password or other login information

Change the affected password from a trusted device, enable multifactor authentication where available, and review account sessions and recovery details. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it there too. Contact the affected service through its official website—not through the phishing message.

If you entered your recovery phrase

Assume the wallet is compromised immediately. Do not wait for the phishing page to say whether the phrase was valid.

  1. Stop entering information into the site.
  2. Use a trusted, clean hardware wallet to generate a completely new wallet and a new recovery phrase.
  3. Move assets from accounts controlled by the exposed phrase to the new wallet as soon as safely possible.
  4. Do not restore or reuse the exposed phrase.
  5. Do not enter the exposed phrase into another website or software wallet for testing.
  6. Review connected applications and revoke unnecessary permissions where applicable.
  7. Preserve the email, headers, screenshots, domains, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, and timestamps.
  8. Report the incident through Ledger’s official support channel and to relevant email, hosting, exchange, or law-enforcement reporting channels.

A replacement device alone does not fix the problem. The security improvement comes from generating a new recovery phrase and moving funds away from the exposed one. Ledger’s hardware-wallet safety guidance recommends moving funds to a newly set-up hardware wallet when the recovery sheet has been compromised.

If you connected a wallet or approved a transaction

Some scams do not request the phrase. Instead, they ask users to connect a wallet and approve a transaction. Reject anything you did not intentionally create. A Ledger device displays transaction details for physical confirmation, so read the recipient, amount, network, and other details before approving anything.

  • This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.

If funds have already moved

Preserve evidence immediately, including transaction IDs and destination addresses. Contact any exchange or service that may receive the funds as quickly as possible, although recovery is not guaranteed. Be especially cautious of people promising to recover stolen cryptocurrency in exchange for an upfront fee; that is a common follow-up scam.

How to recognize similar Ledger scams

  • Requests to “verify,” “synchronize,” “validate,” or “secure” a recovery phrase.
  • Urgent claims about a breach, firmware update, KYC issue, account suspension, or device deactivation.
  • Threats that Ledger will freeze, block, or deactivate a self-custody device.
  • Lookalike domains with misspellings, accented characters, or visually similar letters.
  • Links routed through cloud storage, URL shorteners, or unrelated hosting platforms.
  • Requests to install software outside Ledger’s official download page.
  • Instructions to contact supposed support staff through Telegram, WhatsApp, phone calls, or social-media direct messages.
  • Requests for a PIN, passphrase, private key, remote-access session, or fund transfer.

Ledger says it cannot remotely deactivate or block a self-custody device and will not contact users by phone or text message. Domain inspection is useful, but it is not the main defense. The core rule is simpler: never disclose the recovery phrase.

Recovery phrase, passphrase, and Ledger Recover are different

The recovery phrase is the primary wallet backup. A supplementary passphrase can create an additional wallet or account, but it is also sensitive. A passphrase does not make it safe to enter the underlying recovery phrase online and is not a substitute for replacing an already exposed wallet.

Ledger Recover is a separate, optional service that users intentionally choose to use. It does not make unsolicited requests to type 24 words into a random website legitimate. Do not confuse a legitimate opt-in recovery product with an email-based “recovery verification” demand.

Lost device versus exposed recovery phrase

If your Ledger device is lost but your recovery phrase remains secret, you may be able to recover the wallet using a compatible replacement device. If the phrase is exposed, keeping the original device does not restore security because another person may recreate the wallet elsewhere.

A strong device PIN can reduce the risk from a stolen device, but the recovery phrase remains the controlling backup. If both the device and phrase are lost, recovery may be impossible.

Does buying a new hardware wallet solve the problem?

Not automatically. If you only received or clicked the email without exposing a phrase, approving a transaction, or disclosing credentials, buying new hardware is generally unnecessary.

If the phrase was compromised, a replacement hardware wallet can be appropriate—but only if it generates a completely new recovery phrase and you promptly move assets from the old wallet. Do not restore the exposed phrase on the new device and assume the hardware makes it safe.

Buy directly from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Ledger’s official hardware-wallet page lists its current products. The same recovery-phrase rules apply if you compare alternatives such as Trezor or BitBox: changing brands does not remove social-engineering risk. Their official guidance is available from Trezor and BitBox.

How to report the scam

Keep the original message if possible and save:

  • the sender address and full email headers;
  • defanged URLs and domain names;
  • screenshots of the message and website;
  • downloaded filenames, without opening suspicious files;
  • wallet addresses, transaction IDs, and timestamps;
  • any support accounts or phone numbers used by the sender.

Report the message through your email provider, Ledger’s official support channel, and any relevant hosting provider, exchange, wallet service, or law-enforcement reporting system. Use only contact details found through official websites.

The security lesson

A hardware wallet can help keep private keys away from many malware and online attacks, but it cannot stop an owner from voluntarily revealing the recovery phrase. The user’s handling of the phrase and approval of transactions remain critical security boundaries.

Never enter a Ledger recovery phrase anywhere except directly on a hardware device during a legitimate wallet recovery. Ledger will not ask for the words, and a breach alert that asks you to “verify” them is a phishing trap.
