The listing records a winning bid of $295,000. Hagerty later reported the result as $300,900 (£229,000), a separately reported figure that reflects a different price basis.
What happened to Hitchcock’s Bentley?
The car was offered on Bring a Trailer in September 2024, and the auction ended on September 30 with a recorded winning bid of $295,000. The listing records 44 bids and identifies the car by chassis number BC34LEL. Bring a Trailer’s auction listing is the primary record for that result.
Hagerty’s October 7, 2024 report gave the transaction as $300,900 (£229,000). That is a separately reported, fee-inclusive total, not a correction to the auction listing’s $295,000 winning bid. Hagerty’s report also notes the car’s earlier sale that year.
Two auction results in 2024
| Date and venue | Reported result | Price basis |
|---|---|---|
| January 2024, RM Sotheby’s Arizona | $204,400 | Sale result recorded by RM Sotheby’s |
| September 30, 2024, Bring a Trailer | $295,000 | Winning bid recorded in the listing |
| October 7, 2024, Hagerty report on the Bring a Trailer sale | $300,900 (£229,000) | Hagerty’s separately reported fee-inclusive total |
RM Sotheby’s lot record documents the January result and the car’s history. The later figures should not be compared as though they were identical measures: one is an auction listing’s winning bid, while Hagerty reports a fee-inclusive total. The two sales alone do not establish an investment return or a celebrity-ownership premium; they do not account for transaction costs or changes in the car’s condition between sales.

What kind of Bentley was it?
RM Sotheby’s identifies BC34LEL as a 1958 Bentley S1 Continental “Flying Spur” Sports Saloon by H.J. Mulliner. The six-light body has full rear quarter windows. RM Sotheby’s says 54 cars were built in this six-light Flying Spur design, including 16 originally made in left-hand drive.
The car was specified with left-hand drive, power steering, increased-capacity air conditioning and a miles-per-hour speedometer. The Bring a Trailer listing describes a 4.9-liter inline-six engine with twin SU carburetors, a four-speed automatic transmission and servo-assisted drum brakes. It also lists burl wood trim and beige leather upholstery.

How is Alfred Hitchcock connected to the car?
The connection rests on the car’s records, rather than a first-person quotation. RM Sotheby’s describes the original build record as listing “Rolls-Royce Inc. for Mr. Alfred Hitchcock” as the customer. The auction house says Rolls-Royce Foundation ownership cards show that the car arrived in Los Angeles on August 27, 1958, for delivery to Hitchcock.
Why does a title document say 1957?
Although auction houses describe the car as a 1958 Bentley, RM Sotheby’s addendum notes: “Please note that this lot is titled as a 1957.” The title-year note is a document detail; it does not change the model-year description used in the auction records.

What should buyers take from the listing?
Bring a Trailer says the car had been refurbished, repainted dark green, and was offered with historical documentation and refurbishment records. Those are listing statements, not an independent inspection report. A past auction result is also not a current appraisal: it records a particular transaction, date and price basis, not what the car would sell for now.
