The Airbus A320 family overtook the Boeing 737 family in cumulative deliveries in 2025. Reuters reported on October 7, 2025, that delivery of an A320neo to Saudi carrier Flynas brought the A320 family’s total to 12,260, citing aviation analytics firm Cirium. Airbus later confirmed that the A320 family became the world’s most-delivered commercial aircraft in 2025.
When did the A320 family pass the 737?
The reported crossover came on October 7, 2025, when Flynas took delivery of an A320neo. Reuters, citing Cirium data, said the handover brought the A320 family’s cumulative deliveries to 12,260 and put it ahead of the Boeing 737 family. Airbus’s 2026 annual press conference independently confirmed the broader milestone: the A320 family became the most-delivered commercial aircraft in 2025. The exact date and 12,260 tally are Reuters’ report of Cirium’s data, not a figure attributed to Airbus.
The title’s “poised to overtake” framing is now out of date: this is a completed milestone, not a forecast.
How many A320-family aircraft had been delivered by 2026?
Airbus’s June 2026 family factsheet reports 12,670 cumulative A320-family deliveries through the end of May 2026. It also lists 20,169 orders and a backlog of 7,499 aircraft at that reporting point.

These figures describe different stages of the sales process. Deliveries are aircraft handed over to customers; orders are contracted sales; backlog refers to aircraft still awaiting delivery. Orders and backlog should not be added to or described as completed deliveries.
How delivery totals differ from orders and production
“Most-delivered” is a specific historical measure: cumulative completed handovers. It does not, by itself, establish which manufacturer has more orders, which family is more popular, or which program is more profitable. Comparisons should name the metric and its reporting date.

- Annual deliveries: handovers during a stated calendar year; this can vary with production and delivery timing.
- Orders: contracted aircraft, including ones not yet delivered.
- Backlog or undelivered orders: aircraft awaiting handover, subject to each company’s definitions.
- Production rates and targets: manufacturing pace or plans, not completed deliveries.
The distinction matters in comparisons with Boeing. In its second-quarter 2026 filing, Boeing reported 13,880 cumulative firm 737 orders and 4,397 undelivered firm orders as of June 30, 2026. Boeing defines cumulative firm orders as deliveries plus undelivered firm orders, so 13,880 is not a reported cumulative delivery count. Those figures cannot be compared directly with Airbus’s cumulative A320 deliveries as if they measured the same thing.

For context, Airbus reported 793 commercial-aircraft deliveries across its product range in 2025 and an A320-family backlog of 7,163 aircraft at year-end. The year-end backlog differs from the 7,499 figure in Airbus’s June 2026 factsheet because the figures refer to different reporting dates.

The A320 family includes aircraft across the A320 line, and Airbus’s stated product strategy emphasizes larger variants. At its 2026 annual press conference, CEO Guillaume Faury said: “But we don’t intend to add a next member to the family. We just move the centre of the family towards more A321.” He also said the market core had moved toward the A320/A321 and A321/XLR versions. This helps explain Airbus’s product direction; it is not the cause or measurement of the delivery crossover.

Airbus’s June 2026 factsheet lists final assembly lines in Toulouse, Hamburg, Tianjin, and Mobile. Assembly capacity and planned production rates can affect future handovers, but they should not be confused with aircraft already delivered.
What could affect future delivery totals?
Both manufacturers’ production plans are forward-looking context, not proof of future delivery totals. Airbus said it was targeting 70 to 75 A320-family aircraft per month by the end of 2027, with production stabilizing at 75 thereafter. The company linked pressure on its ramp-up trajectory to Pratt & Whitney engine commitments and said its guidance assumed no additional disruptions. These are company targets subject to operating conditions.
Boeing’s second-quarter 2026 filing said the 737 program began transitioning from 42 to 47 aircraft per month in the first half of 2026. That is a production-rate update, not a tally of 737 deliveries. Future cumulative totals will depend on actual completed handovers, rather than stated rates alone.
