Airbnb’s expansion beyond short-term rentals began as a strategy announcement in 2024, not a single product launch. The company launched its Services marketplace and redesigned Experiences in May 2025, then described a broader travel platform in May 2026. The shift adds ways for people to manage listings, offer services and activities, and arrange parts of a trip through Airbnb; availability varies by location.
What did Airbnb announce in 2024?
On August 6, 2024, CEO Brian Chesky said Airbnb would pursue multiple businesses alongside its core home-rental marketplace. TechCrunch described three strands: co-hosting, a return of Airbnb Experiences, and guest services. Chesky said, “We’re going to have to do multiple new things.” The announcement was a strategic plan; Services and Experiences did not launch in their redesigned form until May 2025. TechCrunch’s August 6, 2024 report also noted that Airbnb’s earlier Experiences offering had been paused.
What is Airbnb’s Co-Host Network?
Co-hosting addresses two sides of a short-term-rental management problem: a property owner may want to list a home but lack time to run it, while someone else may have the skills or availability to manage listings but no home of their own to list. Airbnb’s announced approach was to connect these people so co-hosts could help manage properties. That makes the network a hosting and operations marketplace, distinct from booking a stay or an activity.
Airbnb’s Q4 2024 shareholder letter said the Co-Host Network was available in 10 countries at that time: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US. That is a dated availability figure, not a current country count. Airbnb’s Q4 2024 shareholder letter

What are Airbnb Experiences and Services?
On May 13, 2025, Airbnb announced Airbnb Services and a redesigned Experiences marketplace. Services are bookable offerings such as chefs, photography, massage, spa treatments, personal training, hair and makeup, prepared meals, and catering. Experiences are locally led activities in areas such as culture, food, outdoor recreation, art and wellness. The distinction is practical: a service supplies help or expertise during a stay, while an experience is an activity guests book to do.
Airbnb said the new offerings began in select cities and that availability could vary by location. The launch announcement cited more than 2 billion cumulative guest arrivals since the company began; that figure describes Airbnb’s historical scale, not the adoption of the new marketplaces. How did the strategy develop after launch?
Early company-reported indicators
In its 2025 Summer Release SEC-filed report, Airbnb said that since the May 13, 2025 launch, Services and Experiences bookings had an average rating of over 4.9 out of 5 stars based on global reviews, and that it had received more than 60,000 applications from prospective hosts. These are Airbnb-reported launch-period figures. Ratings do not establish profitability, repeat use or durable demand, and applications are not the same as active hosts or completed bookings. Management’s view of the longer horizon
On Airbnb’s November 2025 earnings call, Chesky said Services and Experiences could take three to five years to become a material part of the business. He described a pilot-first, city-by-city approach and said not every pilot would necessarily scale. This is management’s outlook, not a guarantee that the offerings will reach that level or timeframe. Airbnb’s Q3 2025 earnings-call transcript

The broader travel platform described in 2026
In a May 20, 2026 update, Airbnb described expansion beyond homes and activities into trip logistics and additional lodging options. It announced grocery delivery through Instacart, airport pickups through Welcome Pickups, luggage storage through Bounce, in-app rental-car discovery, boutique and independent hotels, more services, and more Experiences. The update also described an AI-enabled app and trip-planning features. These announcements are location- and rollout-sensitive; the release does not mean every feature can be booked everywhere at once. Airbnb also said its review corpus exceeded 1 billion guest and host reviews. Airbnb’s May 20, 2026 update
What Airbnb’s expansion means for guests, hosts and the business
- Guests: Airbnb is trying to put more of a trip—activities, services and selected logistics—within the platform, rather than limiting its role to finding accommodation. Whether a particular option appears depends on destination and rollout.
- Property owners and co-hosts: The Co-Host Network aims to connect people who need listing management with people who can provide it. Its dated 2024 country list should not be treated as a current coverage map.
- Service providers and experience hosts: The marketplaces create routes to offer bookable services or activities, but an application count alone does not show how many providers became active or earned income.
- Airbnb’s business: The strategy could diversify the platform beyond stays, but the launch metrics and announcements do not establish revenue contribution or profitability. Chesky’s stated three-to-five-year horizon underscores that management viewed material scale as a longer-term possibility.
How to check whether an offering is available
Because the company’s releases describe selective launches and staged expansion, check the destination and dates directly in Airbnb before relying on a service, activity, partner integration or hotel being bookable. For a host or prospective co-host, check the current Co-Host Network information for the relevant market rather than relying on the 10-country figure reported for Q4 2024.
